No expert, all I can is, if yout going tft get the biggest one you can afford, no point getting 15 inches if you can afford 17.
and if your system is black and then get a blact tft simple as, and don't cross match.
However i really have no advice deemed overly useful.

Look for maximum resolution and response times.
At least 1280x1048, and <8ms response imo, though I havent looked at TFT's in quite a while.

A CRT. 'Nuff said. (and yes I know you said flatscreen ) With the amount, given the fact that you are in England (unless there are other pounds I'm not aware of), you could pick up several 21" second-hand professional-grade CRTs. Though shipping might knock it down to one (it did with me ). ----------

About 6 months ago I got a AG Neovo F417 for ú149 (inc), I now see dabs are selling them for ú117 (inc). 30 or so 5* reviews can't be wrong. And I have to say that the screen is a lot brighter/more contrast than my old HP 15", plus the sexeh black bezel.
My brother owns the 19" version (F419) and he has similar success stories; though both screens can only achieve 1280x1024. More recent releases have DVI connectors, whereas ones older than 6 months have a standard VGA-15 connector. Dabs are selling for ú175 (inc) which is about what my brother purchased it for, but it's approaching ú149 (inc) in places.
As far as speeds go. The F417 is a 12ms/20ms depending on who you believe (the box it came in, or dabs). I've noticed no ghosting or lag on the screen playing a variety of games (HL2, Eve, B&W2, Dungeon Siege, etc) or from web design or development.
Overall a hearty recommendation.

I personally have dual display, with:
ViewSonic VX924 19" LCD (1280x1024, 500:1 Contrast ratio, 3ms grey to grey) ViewSonic VX922 19" LCD (1280x1024, 650:1 Contrast ratio, 2ms grey to grey)
The VX922 is nicer, it was the second one I picked up for dual display. Can be a bit washed out, but for gaming, it's great

my flat panel that i often play eve on: 19", 8ms, 700:1, 1280x1024
..and it looks totally decent. It was about 190 (us dollars) after rebates and tax/shipping.
But i also have an old, 19" CRT and, unfortunately, eve looks a lot better on that

We've sold more of them than I can remember and not had a single dead pixel. Great for gaming and office use alike and such a decent price. Can't recommend them enough as a no-frills TFT. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

Not the very best: Linkage
But would only cost you: Live mid-market rates as of 2006.07.11 04:10:20 UTC. 159.99 USD = 86.7876 GBP
