I have been on a few missions and the time bonus item have been 900+ reports. MY question is what are these used for?

Nothing. They are just something Agents make you run about on occasion. Not much else to be done with them.

They're needed for doing research on some (all? I dunno) tech 2 blueprints, just like minerals for building stuff. So yes, they have some purpose.

well, except sell them - they don't go for much but every ISK helps when you're starting out :)
