I'm a relatively new player (2 months) who's been running around in a rifter with great success for a while now. But now I'm wanting to upgrade to a cruiser, and here are my thoughts:
Arbitrator: Mostly drone damage, which is a nice change from the rifter. I can use projectile weapons so I don't have to train energy weapons. And it looks great. You might not agree, but I think it's one of the coolest looking ships in the game. I'd have to train quite a few skills to really fly it well, but it might be nice for a change, and since I have a lot of time to train and not much time to actually play (only about 5-10 hours per week), a change might be nice, and I don't mind the training time...
Stabber: A lot like a grown-up rifter (small, fast, projectile/misile damage) which I've had good success with so far. Very similar to what I'm already flying, so it's not really much of a new experience. And I'm really not too crazy about the looks of this ship.
So, as a new player, I'm asking for advice. What are your thoughts about these two cruisers? Or maybe I'm overlooking another ship? Any ideas welcome.

erm, stick to minmitar for now. arbitrater is an amarrian ship..... You should really be asking yourself "Stabber or rupture?" Get a rupture. its basically a slower stabber that can tank ---------------------------

I'm afraid the stabber requires some more skills, both sp and player skills, than the arbitrator. It's a fun ship though.

Stick to minmatar. Arbitrator is probably better at 1vs1 than the stabber but the Rupture is better than both, and you don't need to cross train.

Ok, I realize I probably should have added a few bits of info on my first post. M'bad.
I don't really care about cross training. I know it's more time consuming, but I've got a lot more time to train than I do to play, so I tend to train more than I need anyway (I've already got ammar frig IV and minmitar frig IV as well as gallente frig III and caldari frig III).
Also, I'm not really looking for PVP supperiority. I PVP some, but mostly it's mission running (after all, I don't get to play much, so I tend to be short on ISK). Mostly I'm just looking for a fun ship to fly...not necessarily a PVP pwnmobile or the best stepping stone to larger ships. Fun is the highest priority here.
So far it looks like the general idea is to go for the Rupture, which I'm sure is a great ship, but it's so big and sluggish that I think it would almost be a chore.
I appreciate the good input from everybody so far. Anybody else want to chime in?

If you really want to cross train, the vexor is a very good drone ship aswell..

I was in the same situation recently and chose to move into a cyclone. The other option for me was waiting for either a wolf or jag.
The bc is much slower, but still fun to fly and easily does lvl 3's with a little practice. I just run back and loot with a souped up probe after each mission, not too painful.

You really need drones level V to get good use out of them.
Unlike turrets drones increase very dramatically with skills.
With drones level V you can get 5 drones out at once, but the main thing is you can train drone interfacing, which increases your drones damage by 20% per level.
Arbitrator with drone interfacing 4 is a great little ship, especially for Amarr as we don't have many ships with lots of midslots.
But with just drones level 4, you're doing 5/9ths of the damage from your drones, and you only have 4/5 of the amount.

I've already got Drones IV and I was planning on taking that on up to Drones V while I'm travelling this weekend. What other drone skills should I pick up? I've got Scout Drone Operation II and Combat Drone Operation III.
Also, I'll have Engineering V in 36 hours, so I should have pretty good powergrid availability. Should I also train up Electronics V (currently IV) or is it less critical?
I've got Shield Upgrades, Hull Upgrades, Mechanic, Armor Repair Systems, Shield Management, Shield Operation all at III, but my EW skills aren't quite there yet.
Should I work to get the EW skills up, or are they less important than others? 5% less cap usage/lvl seems like a fairly minor bonus...am I wrong?
Once again: thought/ideas?

Arbitrator is a good ship to fly and it uses ecm very well. One of my favorite ships.

Personally I think the arby is more of a PvP ship than an NPCing ship because of the lack of an above average tank, and the large ammount of med slots for EW.
I'd go with the stabber simply because you don't have electronics 5 or good drone skills, although to be honest a rupture would be far superior for mission running, and you could use your drones lvl 4 skill to use 3x medium drones, rather than the mandatory drones lvl 5 in order to use an arby properly. Drones are support damage on a rupture, not your main damage source.

I definitley agree. Whats dumb is that it looks fast but is really damn slow.
In focusing with this thread, get a rupture. Stabber is hard to work with in most Scenarios. Rupture works well for NPCing. I own spawns in 0.2 with it.

Indeed it is, and regarding the ew skils... they are very important as multyspectral jammers use mucho cap and u are left with almost nothing for ur med armor rep even wihile using nos.
Plus if u train it to lvl 4 and electronics to lvl5 u can use t2 multyspectrals... (so avoiding the very expensive hypnos that are worth 3 mil... just as much as a new arbi :(( )
P.S.I forgot to ask or i missed it in ur post if it's for pvp or pve?
The arbi is not very good for pve... at least not in my experience... but darn good for pvp (group work or solo) ********* buhuhu... ********* |

Having flown blaster + drone boats, rail/missile boats on this toon and now rifters, stabbers and ruptures on my alt account, I have to say that nothing is more fun than flying a stabber. The thing is what I wanted the rax to be, a freakishly fast cruiser that spews out damage left and right, and not having to be at 1km to do it. (Sorry, can't stand rails in Gallente ships).
The only thing that beats the sound of 4 425s open up, is 6 650s, I'm really quite tempted to rush her into a tempest just to use them.

Go for the stabber, it requires less skills to be good in.
Arbitrator requires good Droneery skill to be effective stabber is great, plus you'll go through less stabbers than arbitrators. |

So it seems like a lot of people are pushing for a stabber. It's ugly, but I guess I can handle that. So now a new question comes up: what's a good combat strategy for a stabber? With the rifter I just go right in, orbit at 1k and let the short range weapons destroy everything. I don't have much trouble taking out frigs because I take them out so fast, and I don't have trouble with cruisers because their guns can't track me. But the stabber, while small and fast for a cruiser, is still pretty big. So is the transversal speed high enough to avoid taking some of the hits, or is it better to use the speed to just stay out of range of enemies?
Once again, I may well be missing something totally different, so all ideas are welcome.
