Just started playing after a year out.
I've noticed that when I find loot that another player won but are no longer around. It says I would be stealing if I took it and the person would be able to fire on me.
Can I get away with stealing it?
How can they tell I did?
Does it effect security status?
Also is there a time limit on when they can attack me?

Only by turning up and finding the loot gone AFAIK. Or seeing you with kill rights and guessing.

15 minutes kill rights for them and their corp.

Yep, but be careful- some people try this to try and grief people- they are sometimes cloaked nearby

Good point, thanks. Is there modules available to find cloaked people?
I just hate seeing loot go to waste :)

don't mix terms please mate it confuses ppl. he won't have killrights on you but you will be criminally flagged to him and his corp. ie- you'll turn into a big red flashing icon on his overview for 15 minutes after you take the items. to be honest this is rarely i problem cos if they have left the area then they obviously don't want it. just keep ur eye out for them for 15 minutes.
And no there is no way to detect a cloaked ship but they can be de-cloaked by getting within 2kn of them with either ur ship or any of ur drones.
