Tax dollars?
Must be a British thing, cause in the U.S., most research done by universities isn't funded by tax dollars. |

yes it is, I got some of that tax-payer money to study silly things while I worked for a university (input times vs processing time, code speed vs user needs, in the old cobol days), it was thought to be important by someone somehwere, or purhaps, uncle sam liked to waste our money...($15,000 toilet seats...)

This kind of research is unlikely to be funded by the UK government.
Mostly the UK government subsidises under-graduate fees (although not much now we get stuck with loans ).
If anything, this is likely to have been paid for by private companies - the post graduate and full time research posts are mostly funded this way, unless it's something the governments wants to fund, like medical research and stuff.
Edit: Actually it says it's doctoral work, so the guy is likely to have stumped up his own fees or do it by working part time at the university. This is probably just his student thesis, not a big project funded externally.

in college most of our studies where funded by private corps,(engineering student) as it was cheaper for them to hire us to do the research for them then to hire a full R&D department and equip. it.

To most Londoners, anything further away than Watford is "The North."
To be fair to them, most of the rest of the population is equally parochial. But it's more noticeable coming from London, because the vast majority of important/powerful people live there.

However, most research in the UK is funded by the government through bodies like the EPSRC, PPARC etc.
