So first of all, well done on the majority of Crius, the new UI is not only a significant improvement but seems well thought out (everyone else noticed the ability to copy materials from the little material nodes yet? I use the db but that sort of thing just makes me smile).
Teams however, whilst nice in principal are broken on execution. Nothing unusual, just the same problems as ebay...too easy to pick up bids at the last second meaning that there is 0 point in bidding beforehand; perhaps it'll even out as systems are filled with the teams they want, but its just a bad model to follow in general, atleast hide the 'time remaining' if the team has less than a day.

I tend to agree that the bidding mechanism is at the very least a very uninteresting one - there are better ways to do this. Sealed envelope style auctions would be VERY interesting for those really nice teams out there for making capital components for instance.
Maybe we can incentivise teams with exotic dancers for instance! (Or more realistically - as part of the bid include an increase in the % payout that the team will receive)
But in any case you are correct - if you are not online at the time when the team you want comes up for auction, you are most likely NOT going to be able to get that team. Sad, but true.
Fun can be had out of this though... I am just waiting for goons to troll everyone and buy up all the cap production teams or something |

There is a system that limits the minimum bid depending on the amount of jumps the team has to do, this limit should be a minimum increase on all bids, not just the minimum total.
This makes sense because jumps cuts into the teams profit and they want more then 0.01 to jump to your system that might be further away than the current top bidders system. |

Current system: Wait until 1-3s on clock, click your bid and hope that it ends up being the highest.
Suggesting simple improvement: Hidden bids, nothing is shown on bidders / ISK amounts. You can put your own (hidden) bid at any time before the end of the timer and at the end of auction, it goes to highest bidder. Would not require alarmclocking for putting in your bid like it does today.
More complex improvement would include snipe rules, ie. any new bid adds X time to the clock, requiring a bidding war "live".
Even better improvement would be to include ability to set your max acceptable bid and have the system automatically 0.01 ISK against competition and their hidden maxes.

I've tried another strategy and it has served me very well -- that is called intimidation, or "double your bid".
Say I saw a team that is worth 100M to me, I would have started with 10M in the last two days. If some system came in with 11M, I would raise it to 20M.
If they raised their bids again, I would raise the bid to 40M or 50M. At that point, most people would haved backed off and I saved 50M.
If they didn't give up and raised their bids to 51M, I would double check whether a similar team is coming up in a few days. If the answer is "yes', I would back off; otherwise, I would submit my last bid -- 70M.
So far the last step was never taken. Most systems walked out the auction when I raised the bid to 50M. One case I did encounter was some system put directly 140M into auction. This time, is was me who was intimidated and walked away. |
