If you dont mind sharing the technology behind it?
having streamed a few live events, I'm guessing:
Video Source (Camera / Mixer etc) | | PC With Capture Card, running windows media encoder. | | Encoded video feed pushed to distribution server | Distribution Server(s) | | Client with Windows Media Player
Or is it all alot more complicated than that?
How were the live fights done? I know WME has a screen capture client but I didnt think it could handle directX stuff. Perhaps fraps is a viable sourcem, or even the output of the PC screen converted to Video / svideo and piped through a mixing desk to the same stream box....

Yes, I think Tux was quite good at it.... As for the rest..........
Nah, seriously, from the moment I was able to connect (having read it was on and tried different non-working links, jumped in around 3rd-5th match) I stayed til the end. Even forgot to change skills on time because of it...

They must have had a hell of a computer to do the real-time encoding... or maybe they just chose low quality mode.
Encoding WMV on "High Quality" mode (nothing to do with bitrate, there's a seperate slider that trades encoding speed for quality) can take 10-30 times longer than the video length.

Is there a specific codec needed to watch this? I've tried in winamp and on wma on both my computers. Winamp locks up, and media player claims your link is bad... and yes the server is up lol...

I dunno - it needs to be good, but nut 'uber' at least when I've played with it.
A P4 3Ghz with 1 Gb of Ram can encode @ 640*480 27 fps, in good quality. Unless there's lots of fast moving action on screen in which case it throws a fit.
WME is multithreaded & can take proper advantage of dual-core cpus - so a mid range dual-core cpu would rock for this kind of thing.

I suppose sombody had better give a sensible anwser here
We have a really uber video capture card in the streaming PC which takes in the video signal from the video mixer and the audio from the sound mixer. This then does a whole load of real-time pre-processing on the signals which takes enough load off the CPU to let it convert in real time to high quality .wmv
That said we are still using a total beast of a PC and its still uses 50% CPU during the studio segments and up to 80% CPU in battles to convert it in real time. We might even upgrade it before next weeks battles too!

Why are you guys assuming it's a standard PC? I'd guess that it's some kind of funky media stream hardware device thingymebob.

Standard PC with uber video capture card is cheaper. Anyway the video quality from the card has been awesomely good, we really are happy with it. There are occasionally pixalisation and artefacts due to the fact we are streaming at 512 kb/s. However the image coming out of the video capture card is fantastic which has really helped with the quality of the broadcast. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Mark A on 16/07/2006 21:59:23 Even a bog standard PC is more than capable of encoding video at the low resolution/bitrate of EveTV, so that's not a problem. I'd guess they have a PC running and EVE client and just take an analog video feed off that to capture card, rather than trying to capture digitally on the same machine.
I'm not sure how you push that to a video stream but again that doesn't seem that challenging with the right software. Then you just need a buttload of bandwidth off the streaming server.
Oh and some kind of mixing desk/production console to cut between the client feed, studio cameras, pre-recorded footage etc.

ooh interesting - thanks for the answers!
I wasnt aware of a card that could help out with wmv encoding. I've used the PCI-E ATi all in wonder cards quite sucessfully - but they pretty much rely on the PC to do the grunt of the processing.
nice job!

VLC on my machine can quite happily transcode EveTV to DIV3/MP3 at the original resolution 1024/192 kbits/sec, and save it to an external HDD over a network (using windows file sharing of all things). Does it in real time for hours on end, looks as good as the original. And this is an old 1.8Ghz laptop doing it, so the computer power needed to encode and stream is not going to be that much. ----------

Are they using a special version of the client? As I've never seen a screenshot where you can see the shields/armour/hull of all the involved parties.
It's like the GANG info but the uber version.
