Hi
If you find the subject offensive, so do I.
I raised this privately directly with Eve's paid GM's. However I was asked to post this in the ideas area by the GM Nepthys.
Given that Eve had these rules of conduct about swearing, please can you ensure that the NPC's do not swear either. I could not complete a mission (due to the computer not providing the goods it wanted me to deliver). When it timed out I received a very offensive message from my agent with words such as "friggin" in them.
I do not consider this is the sort of language that Eve is trying to promote, and if you expect good language from the players, you should not use foul language yourselves.
Please can you arrange for the emails sent out from Agents to be checked and email me ([email protected]) to confirm this
Thank you
Captain Rat

I am a little confused by this.
You just failed to deliver something for your Agent, and you expect him to be polite about you screwing him over.
Fair enough it might be a bug that caused your problems, but your Agent does not know that. Hence why is he a little annoyed. Nothing to see here .... move along. |

Edited by: Rigsta on 03/10/2003 18:04:39 Namarus, you missed the point. NPCs are exactly that, parts of the program. If their dialogue is offensive then it should be fixed. Regardless of how they "feel".
Granted, the words mentioned are pretty tame as cursing goes, but an option to restrict the display of offensive words should be incorporated if people feel strongly about it. ----------------------------------------------- My Ideas: Drones wish list and NPC crew members |

I strongly suspect that it's not the language that offended him, but the hypocrisy. If we're not allowed to call each other sponges, then the NPC characters should not be allowed to call us sponges either. And so on.
(Note for the confused: "sponge" is not a bizarre and profane insult where I live. It's just the first word I happened to think of.)

Actually, I have no problem with failing the mission. In this case, it was Eve's fault, but that wasn't what I was complaining about.
It was just that the language used was not appropriate for a game which tells their players not to use bad language.
Eve rule 3 says "You may not use any ... offensive sexually explicit ... or vulgar language."
And yet, the NPC's are doing just that.
Firstly it exposes people to the exactly the language the rules are telling the players to avoid.
Secondly it sets a bad example - and if people do use offensive language, they could say that it is OK because they are only sing the lnaguage Eve itself uses.

OMFG (Oh my fruity god) we wouldn't want to offend anybody...someone is complaining over the use of friggin!? Give me a break. What's next? hmm let me think on it...maybe they can use these instead.
Tooty fruity shucky darn Oh gee golly gosh willickers gee golly garsh
Yeah those would sound good. Please for the love of all that's holy keep the seedy dirtbag type characters sounding like they are just that.
Peg leg the killer pirate says "Avast ye spacesick college grads (wouldn't want to insult their intelligence and offend them). Eject your cargo or I'll umm taunt you second time. (we wouldn't want to threaten violence and offend someone). Oh you want to run away and ignore me, umm that's ok. (Wouldn't dare to call out any insults or actually fire on them. My god if saying friggin will offend them imagine the outrage over actual weapons fire!)
Life isn't fair and neither is Eve. Get over it. |

i mean, jeez. friggin?! friggin is used in place of the f-word when you're trying to avoid offending someone...
you, dear friend, are the absolute pickiest player i've ever heard of. what's next? can't show Boosters on the Market because that promotes drug use in real life? oh, wait! let's nerf the entire idea of slavery in the game because that might offend African-American players. and let's do away with all this awful "podding" thing, because that promotes murder. we battle using a tag system instead...

save your complaints for *real* swear words!
...friggin' CB. (oops, did i type that outloud?)

I take it all these people complaining that it's "not an obscenity" haven't bothered to look it up.

actually according to dictionary.com it means the same as the "F" word aswell as the solo version.
but i supose the argument comes down to lines and where you draw them. for example the "C" word is seen as a much worse swear word on British TV and Film censership when compared to the "P" word although mean same thing. so where do you draw the line? on the meaning or on the social acceptence? and who decides?
