Hi!
I just downloaded the trial over the weekend and so far I'm liking EVE a lot; I suspect I'll end up subscribing.
Anyway, when I made my character, I overlooked the sugguestion in the training thread to start with 12ish memory and just equalized all my stats but cha. My int/mem/will/perception are all 9, and my cha is 3 (as a Caldari/Achura).
Is that going to serve me alright? I'm looking to go into a combat career. Also, what difference would having 12 memory instead of 9 make? Is that worth rerolling over? After only 2 days of playing, restarting wouldn't be that big of a deal, but finding out I should have 2 months down the road would not be much fun.
Any other suggestions for someone new to the game?
Thank you in advance for your advice and help. >Alex

Welcome to eve. If your looking at getting into pvp then you really want your perception and willpower attributes as high as possible. also take advantage of the new starter characters that can start with race frig at lvl4.
Enjoy

So it would be wise to reroll? If so, what would optimal starting stats be? Or would training the learning skills (I'm level 3 IR/AM/Learning, level 2 perception already) be good enough to get my will/perception where they need to be?
Also, what race starts with frigate four? (I'm up to frigate 3 with a merlin already on this character).

I appreciate the link, but I'm unsure what stats levels I should be shooting for, so it's of limited usefulness to me.
Is 9 to everything but cha (which is 3) good starting stats for a fighter type? If not, what is?

shoot, your stats are better than mine were. I put all I could into CHA....
There's skills and implants in the game that allow you to boost stats. The reason people stress Memory, Intel, and Per is because they are the most common primary attributes to train skills.
I'd go with what you got, You won't see a huge difference in the skills until you begin training things like Industry V. Mabey learn a few of the Learning skills, to 3 somewhat early, but don't worry about it to much.
Getting memory to 12 from the start won't make a difference in the first month where it takes only 1min less to train a skill. In the long run, yea it can be worth it, But with a 9base (shoot, JUST got my mem to 9... oh wait, I got podded..... 7 I mean) you won't have any problems

Sorry for the delayed reply. Your attributes look fine to me from the sound of it. charisma is spot on. basically as low as possible as the others are way more commonly used for skills relating to a combat character. the frig u choose depends on ur fighting style which unfortunately you won't know until you try them. caldari frigs are pretty good to start with, minmatar frigs are also very good beginner pirating frigs. Rifter ftw. But yeah i'd say stick with what ya got mate, just get signed up

Thank you for the info. Do stats do anything but increase your learning time? Or do they tangably affect your combat ability?

All they do is increase learning time, of course, higher skills can equal to better combat abilities, (IE navagation V = 25% speed boost, Battlecruiser skill in a cyclone gives a 7 1/2% boost to sheild booster power

I wouldn't even dream of rerolling because of those stats. Those are excellent stats.
12 mem on a fighting character? Er..no. Memory's biggest boost is to increase the speed of the Learning tree, after that it helps for drones and then is secondary (or nonexistant) on any other combat related ability. You need more than Perception and Willpower to train your Ships/Guns/Missiles, Intelligence is crucially important for the engineering, mechanic, electronics trees, without which any combat character is utterly crippled.

Edited by: Rhoofles on 18/07/2006 18:28:07 One thing that I did not really realize when first starting and choosing a race is that all stats do is affect training time on skills. Even if you had 15 charisma, you still can learn combat skills (albeit slower).
The advice I took as a beginner was to go after the race that got Gunnery to V or Racial Frigate to IV. That gives you 200,000 + starting skill points, which saves you about 10-14 days over starting with a character with only 50K starting skill points.
Personally, I picked Minmatar because I liked the idea of faster ships (a generality). I wanted to do missions right away, so I opted to go with the class that got me Minmatar Frigate IV. I then balanced out my other starting stats with the 5 points they give you without putting anything in Charisma.

If you think about it, it doesn't really matter what your starting stats are.
If you have high perception/willpower, your weapon skills will train faster, but your other skills will be slower.
If you have high memory/intelligence, your weapon skills will train slower, but your other skills will be faster.
In the end, it equals out to be the same training time across the board. Three months from now, you'll have the same number of skill points no matter what your starting stats were. You'll just have a different skill set.
