I really enjoy the idea of developing an explorer-type character. My concept is to develop skill points toward being able to delve deeply into hostile/new space looking for adventure or new discoveries. Obviously having the right ship is important and maybe deciding what ship is best to explore in will guide my skill decision, but I am still sufficiently new (1 month, 1.4M skill pts) that I welcome advice.
I am also not looking to avoid combat completely. I would like to have a ship/skills where I can fight if need be or run if out gunned.
Any thoughts on either skill paths or ships? Thanks.

you know, I wish I could remember where I read it (possibly in the pre-release notes for the next expansion?) but I believe that exploration is going to be included as a part of Eve in the (semi)near future - whilst I think what you're planning on doing is very, very cool, there might be some built-in support for your idea somewhere in the pipeline.
now, i'll leave it to others to give you some really good advice, but i'd probably be inclined to use a smaller, less expensive ship (like a frigate, so i wouldn't be upset if something happened to it) that could be loaded up with ECM/stealth equipment (so you'd need those skills to complement it) allowing you the best chance to get where you're going and still be able to get out again :)
again, great idea

However fun it can be, I don't think being an explorer would be a viable goal, at leats not longterm. If you're new I can understand you want to see the universe a bit but you'll soon find that there's not that much to see and you'll run into problems.
Understand that high low sec=urity and 0.0 makes up for a large part of the EVE universe and just going out on a photoshoot safari doesn't grant you a travel pass so you'll get blown out of the sky a fair few times. If you DO want to go on a sight seeing tour the best ship to take would be a Covert Ops, in this case a Helios. They can't shoot what they can't see :)

Thanks Makaylah. I understand that looking at the 100th asteriod belt can be a little mind-numbing. I figured that at some point I would be able to branch out to combat recon or archeology when I got bored with always warping to the next star system.

You need to make a living. As such, you need to sell either goods or service. Selling your service as an explorer wouldn't be likely to draw a big market, as most of the people who would be interested already have their own exploration operations. I would guess that your best bet is to join a corp with ops in 0.0, and let them know that you're interested in doing exploration.

As an explorer you might want to check out these developer blogs: System Scanning Exploration: Lack Of Content
Currently, other than a few no useful items, exploration isn't worthwhile. Tho I'm not sure if Kali expansion will change this :)
For exploration in lower sec, the fastest ship you can fly, 'safespost' and Warp Core Stabilizers.

Explorer type... well...
You can train up to cloaking which fits your planned role and will give you a use once you... get real.
At the moment there isnt much about exploration. If you intend to sniff around in 00 or in low lowsec as a newbie, thats a viable option. You'd gather that others left behind - you should earn quite quite well.
But exploration... Doesnt exist at the moment.
On the other hand, archology as you mentioned could be useful for many people. But game play wise it doesnt have much to do with exploration honestly.

You could turn it into a profitable business - spying for other corporations or mapping instas. People who earn a reputation as making good instas are paid very well.
As for really exploring, you can't really do that. It's not like another mmo where you ask "What's over the top of that mountain?" ... "A giant rock monster?! CooOOooll!". They're systems, with planets, moons, asteroids, and the like. ___________________________ |

The new salvage mini-profession will rely heavilly on exploration as well. Basically with Kali every ship that is destroyed will leave a wreck. If you have the skills you can scavange that wreck and get bits and pieces used to created add-ons for ships (not fittings, add-ons, it's a whole new system of upgrades).
Where the exploration comes in is if I understand it correctly the skills needed for salvage are aimed to be pretty heafty and not that sort that every player would have. Meaning that only a portion of the ships destroyed would be salvaged by the one who destroyed them, leaving unclaimed wrecks around for people to use scanners to find and scavange themselves.
So very excited by this :) -------

Closest thing I can relate to an explorer profession atm would be moon surveying, and selling the results to potential buyers.

Well, I think I have the next two months of skills mapped out now (lol). Lots of things to train to 5 (Gallente Frigate, Electronics Upgrade, Science, Survey, Electronics). Glad I spent some time on Learning skills.
