I see a few jet cans in noob systems and for fun, I wouldn't mind trying to pilfer the ore and create ill will (not really doing it for the money)
What are the repercussions in high sec besides being available to be killed by the victim and his corp? Does it kill any rep/illicit CONCORD intervention?
If it's just corp retaliation... it doesn't seem like a big deal. What type of ship should a new player (Gallente) attempt doing this with? |

If you steal in HiSec then you will go yellow to everyone ... Not just the victim & his corp.
It can be good fun but if you are doing it in any of the starter systems then ccp may have something to say about it.

OK, so reviewing the first link, I can be attacked for 15 minutes by any player without repercussions to them. I also understand that if I am fired on, I can return fire ("limited engagements") without penalty.
I am trying to understand the timer thing - I assume I can't just quickly dock and pat myself on the back? Do I have to remain in space (maybe bookmark some "safe" location and just hang out until the timer expiry) until the suspect timer clears? Or if I dock early, am I somehow still at risk? |

You can still dock as long as you haven't got the 1 minute weapons timer.
So if you wanted you can just steal and then go and wait out the suspect timer in the station. |

Also watch out for limited engagement timers, the cyan blue crossed swords icon next to suspect. Even if your not suspect if you still have that flag the person who initiated that flag can still shoot you freely and pod you in highsec. OK, so if I do the following:
1. Approach can 2. Align to station 3. Loot can 4. Warp and dock at station and wait out timer
It's that easy? Where is the risk/repercussions to me? |

Stop at number three. Warp around and see if anyone will engage you.
You can have some really fun and interesting fights when you're blinky. Which is a good part of what this game is about.

Warp and dock at station and wait out timer It's that easy? Where is the risk/repercussions to me? almost nothing aside from getting a name for yourself, be aware though the newbie systems are in fact monitored by the gm's so don't make a habit of shinaninganising(-¬Ralph2014) the brand new players in them. A hand full of occasions at most to prove the concept for yourself and then you should move that sort of thing out into the world.
Also, if you're able to use combat probes (a fairly short train) you can "Ninja Loot" this is, scan down and enter other players mission area's and do the same thing with their mission items and then well then back to them, (bear in mind the mission rats might well switch aggression to you , so you could end up with that and an angry player after your head). We call this "mission flipping" if you are in fact looking for a fight and I would highly recommend it as a gateway into PvP as you can be almost completely assured the target will be pve fit and you can (almost) always disengage if it goes **** up. =][= |

Rules beyond the rules? I hope they let the noobs goof on each other. At any rate, I'll give it a try.

Yeah that's more or less the case, just be aware that once you get a feel for the mechanics you should move to another system (you would be surprised how little a difference it will make, plenty of morons out there )

So, I see this "Giant Freight Container" but I cannot open it (locked on it, and approached it, but no option to open it).
I take it that these aren't considered jet cans or are secured in some manner?
edit: Nevermind - when I left clicked the object, it didn't show up, but in a separate window "selected item", it gave me the option. :P
It was empty. :( |

It was empty. :( Right clicking on an object in space should give you a dropdown menu with options too. If in doubt right click all of the things.

Hardly anyone jetcan-mines anymore. Sometimes you'll find freight containers in belts, but the days of belts littered with cans have been over since the latest iteration on mining barges.
If you want to deliberately flag yourself to see of anyone tries to engage, you can still find yellow wrecks in belts below 0.9 sec. -á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á "LIVE FAST DIE." - traditional Minmatar ethos [citation needed] |

Does anyone use jet cans anymore? W/ the advent of ore-bays I don't think it's useful or efficient for miners to use jet-cans. It seems like the only jet cans sitting around are bait traps for the tri-boxers that have about a billion skill points between their 3 pilots.

In populated high-sec it's not a great idea, but when I used to mine in low-sec (a pretty dead system) it was a good way to save time. |

If you steal ore from newbies and then give it back, you teach them a valuable lesson without hurting them and likely without turning them away from the game. You wouldn't get in trouble for that. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. seriously, the noobies don't mind getting belted around and podded, its a great way to break the ice. once you convo them afterwards and chat to them (you may want to drop the price of a new ship onto them) it can be a learning experience. =][= |

Raw jet canning by itself is indeed as good as dead. If a miner is fairly sure no one will bother him (mining in a deserted corner), he may use a MTU along with a covetor/hulk, but simply dumping a jet can in space without having it be tractored in by something/someone just isn't a good idea anymore. |

1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. Yes
And, Yes.
Risk? Really, none - especially if no one sees you and aren't paying attention as they won't know who looted the can (it doesn't exactly generate a notification, afterall). Repurcussions? Well, if I were still a highseccer, I would set a trap and wait to snatch you as you went yellow. http://www.thecoffeerocks.com Twitter: @thecoffeerocks |-áSteam: CoffeeRocks-á https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&find=unread&t=327221 |

This. Launching jet-cans is extremely situational now-a-days, and I typically only see it in ice belts with an MTU and freighter/orca present. Even then, the person is very wary of anyone else nearby.
In the past, jet-can mining was the way to do it and you'll still find plenty of stories online. These, of course, are confusing to the new players coming into the game :P
Another thing to think about: you may be seeing "secure cargo containers" that are anchored and password protected. This is another method that people use in lieu of jet cans, but you will be unable to access the can. Unless, of course, the person neglects to PW it - which I have found several loads of ore this way in the past http://www.thecoffeerocks.com Twitter: @thecoffeerocks |-áSteam: CoffeeRocks-á https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&find=unread&t=327221 |

It gets really fun when you're at the level where you have an Orca alt to fiddle with, and you come across massive jetcan mining fleets which use the new and oh-so-convenient Mobile Tractor Unit.
But I won't spoil the game for you. :) Epic Space Cat |

Yeah, it is fun trying to figure things out, whether you commit it against someone else or you're the victim.
I was selfish - I just dragged a hauler out to double dip from that container again.
