Not to mention small fry merc work is pretty much dead (if it was ever really alive). You gotta be able to hit alliances in 0.0 and do some real damage (kill cap ships/POS etc). Killing a few nubs in empire no longer cuts it in the merc business.
Be honest now, what would you know about that? You yourselves confess you dont do the small fry stuff any more, so I dont see where you get your opinion on that market from. There are literally dozens of newbie and small merc corps registering themselves at the merc thread each month - and I should know, I'm running it and struggling to fit them all into the very limited post character count, while still in alphabetical order! The small time market is overcrowded, not dead due to lack of interest.
It is the top end of the market, the killing POS/capships/really hurting alliances that is very slow, purely due to lack of competition and sizeable merc entities to take those jobs on, and counter them when they are.
Coz killing 3 months old nublets in empire doesn't make you neither well paid, nor famous and sooner or later good people will leave you and join other corps. Remember what happened to KIA while BoB "contract"... just because they could not bring it in 0.0 and could not hurt them in empire.
90% of "mercs" maybe get paid what wardec cost and not even 1 isk more, if that. And honestly, very very few merc corp can do something in 0.0 these days, and well established alliances will still escort freighters into and out of empire while mercs will just log/dock/hide/run for the hills at that time.
To conclude: mercs are waste of isk, unless if you have plan and hire MC.
Well you've left PA and joined BOB, but you still haven't got a clue. At some point in your eve career KIA must have really smacked your botty hard because it is still smarting as you somehow manage to drag them into every thread that mentions mercs and speak negatively about them. As for the infamous KIA-BOB contract, you again manifest your total ignorance of what actually happened. I'd suggest you speak with some of the older and wiser members of BOB before you spout your usual verbal diarrhea. You also seem to be under the impression that Mercs do it for the money. I very much doubt that any merc has done or is doing it for the money. They are doing it for the role play and the fun, (well I am )
As for "small fry merc work" being dead I would beg to differ. Our small merc corp have had some nice Empire and 0.0 contracts that have been great fun and quite well paid. Not all clients want you to go and destroy pos's or capital ships etc. Because that is what you do as merc corp/alliance doesn't mean that everything else is Bollix or not worthwhile.
As already mentioned we have also been contracted by alliances against alliances in 0.0. The client doesn't expect us to destroy the target but generally to cause as much mayhem and disruption as possible.
With a different account I was a member of BYDI when they were mercs the first time. They were professional then and did what they were what they were paid to do and I am sure it will be no different this time round. I wish them all the best.
