As far as I'm aware all systems that have security status of 0.0 and above have names. Any systems that have security status of -0.0 and below are just random letters and numbers (apart from Y9G-KS, which for some reason has a pronouncable name). Although it actually turns out Poitot is -0.0196, which completely wastes my point. I'll do a bit more sniffing and see if I can find out of there's some kind of threshhold which causes systems to get names.

Stamm Amarr	Posted - 2006.07.20 23:30:00 - [74] Right. I have embarked on months of careful study, and the results of my investigation I can now lay forth. There's no real pattern to it. I suspect that all systems at one point had a 6 character name with a - in it. And CCP have overwritten these with real system names. E.g. at some point Jita may have been OMG-1W. Generally systems with security status over exactly true 0 have names, and those below still have the 6 character name. But there's exceptions in either direction. There's systems with positive security status that still have a 6 character autogenerated name. And there's systems that have negative security status, yet have a real name. I've not seen any other than Poitot, but there's piles to look through, when I've finished looking in several solar revolutions time, I'll come back and post.

Two score and ten years ago I left on a quest to find out if there were any more systems with negative true security and a name. The results of my years of scholarly pursuit are as follows. Yes. There's Atioth, Jorund, Farit, Doril, Hemin, and then I got bored. So basically it boils down to this. Got a name? Positive security status. Got a 6 character randomly generated thingum? Negative security status. There are however lots of exceptions to this rule.
