After reading some threads about people flying around with contraband and not getting caught and getting an offer from my agent I decided to try out this way of generating isk. Being a noob and totally unprepared this was a BIG mistake.
Here's my story in short:
I got this offer to smuggle contraband from my agent which he rewarded with 20 juicy Million isks. So I aquired the desired goods and just to be on the sure side some extra as well. Then being "smart" I transfered my remining 200k isk balance to a new alt I just created for that purpose. Since you can't buy goods when you ain't got isks I figured I would be on the safe side (wallet can't go negative - so I thought)
first shipment was ok - I guess I was just lucky. As the items were bulky I was required to do several trips. And then it happened. The custom officer got me and it was the choice of handing over the contraband or be destroyed. (so for all those guys who thought these officers are mere decoration and won't work - WRONG) But the big surprise just followed suit: I got fined on top for my ebil wrongdoings and behold my wallet turned negative.
So what to do next ? I invested all my isks in the contraband and sofar didn't even get the reward. So I decided to risk another run with the spare items so the reward could cover my losses. Well to shorten the story I got caught another 2 times but managed to get the reward the agent had offered.
From an economic view point my just newly started career was a total loss. Total investment (good + risk costs aka fines) it was 60 Million isks - earnings the mentioned 20 Mill isks. So I ended up with minus 40 Million isk on my main account. Plus the alt that I started using after the 2nd penalty has another - 5 Mill in his wallet.
Ok it was noobish and didn't turn out as I thought. Naturally I was angry but hey the game goes on so I decided to start doing some work in order to reduce my debt. Now the really big surprise hit me: I couldn't use the hauling agent anymore because of course I didn't have any isks anymore for collateral. Ok I thought lets sell the trade goods that are still laying around for starters. Next shock: The market won't work anymore. It seems that the sales tax is not decucted from the sale but from the wallet instead. So by having a negative wallet the system didn't let me sell stuff anymore. So of course mining as an alternative for income was out the window as well. Ok mining I still can but without selling the ore no iskies will come to my wallet. Oh and forgot to mention that my skill points just reached the value of the clone that I had recently bought. So not only having lost everything except my 2 ships (hauler and frig) I now am in danger of loosing skill points as well should I get podded.
Ok the reason I'm telling this isn't that I want to whine so much about being caught-no it's more a warning to all other guys out here who thought about trying smuggling as a career alternative.
Conclusion:
If you really wanna do smuggling, keep these mentioned facts in mind and do a bid of planning first. Create an alt, invest a couple hours into him and train him up to hauler. Then use this alt to do the dirty deed. If you get caught and fined, you can just write him of. Rinse (delete) and repeat. That's what I should have done in the first place.
Final statement:
Although I have petitoned this case (as I'm literally stuck with my main now) I don't know when I will get an answer and what it will be, so if this was useful information for you or did it just make you laugh - feel free to donate any spare isks to me so I get a second chance with playing eve.

Chill out, dude. He's just trying to tell a story, no different than a new player telling of his first PvP or whatever.
Sure, the petition part of it may sound a bit whiny, but what do you think you would do if your wallet had a negative balance?
Just quit the flaming, and don't post if you can't say something constructive, or, at the very least, something with a little bit of logic/reason behind it. _________________________________________ 2005.01.17 22:04:22 combat Chackle [PUSY] perfectly runs from you, wrecking for 1500 cowardice. |

Not to mention the OP mentions Alt recycling for making it easy. I'd recommend against this, being it's against the EULA to recycle alts for such activities.

What might be nice is a proper smuggling FAQ. I've poked about abit since I started playing EVE just a little over a week ago. And there doesnt seem to be a whole lot about smuggling. Nor are too many people apparently sure (even much older players) About what skills, if any assist with smuggling. Though I've heard mention that black market trading supposedly lowers chance of getting scanned up to 40 percent at level 5. And I've read that one post where that guy says he was going round for ages with illegal cargo.
But personally I cant seem to find a solid list of what, if any skills actually help beyond possibly Black market trading. Ship wise I assume (And some one please correct me if I'm wrong) the best type for low risk contraband running would actually likely be a covert-op ship. Unless you can get scanned by the agents while cloaked?

First let me thank you all for your answers and insights.
I would like to point out a few things though:
1.) about me petition this case
I am totally against petition every tiny bit but in this case I feel it is justified. Why ? Because I think there is a bug in the system. Let's try it to see from my point of view. I tried to do some shady business and got caught and fined - sofar so good. I might not like it but I don't have a problem with it. But now let's consider that I have quit some trade goods that I got from previous missions as bonus. Now why is it that I'm not allowed to sell them ??? Every time I try to sell them I get an error message saying that I need 0.0 isk and I have -42 Mill isks and therefore can't BUY the item. (notice that I said buying; and this was after I clicked the selling button) - So therefore I consider this a bug which is not logical and should be corrected.
2.) recycling of a character Thanks for pointing out that this was against the EULA. First of all I didn't do it yet - just thought about it. But what would be more preferable I wonder ? Delete a character which isn't playable anymore (can't buy or sell anything, can't do hauling missions and so on) or trying to sell it through the forum which isn't against the EULA as far as I know ?
3.) alot of speculations And finally after reading the answers it seems that I wasn't off so much as there are alot of other people who have heard that this and that might work but it seems to me that save a few exceptions I feel that nobody really knows much about smuggling. A guide to smuggling might therefore be not such a bad idea me thinks.

some people seem to be able to get away with Smuggling, so is it less a profession and more of a sub-game? That is, the folks I've read about that seem to be able to do it just might be more knowledgeable (no offense) and/or have more time. It's something I'd like to try, but it seems like something you need to do once you master a few other general game activities, and less a skill profession CCP can offer. Dunno.

Trade the Stuff for selling to your Alt and let him sell them. I don`t know if you have a second account for your Alt and can be online with both Characters. If not, ceate a Trialaccount, trade it there and then to your Alt. GrnŻe

No need for a second account. Escrow the stuff to the alt - no fee needed afaik - and let the alt sell it. Then the alt can transfer the money back to the main. Me thinks. --

There's a fee to enter things into escrow, so he can't do that.
To the OP: provided you're not out of ammo (or use lasers), you can go ratting or complex running. Kill missions will also be fairly lucrative.
The only other way is to trade items to a friend or a second account, get them to sell it and trade the money back.
