1) A while back I decided to invest the time to train up to a covert ops frigate and the skills to use scan probes effectively. I read the scanning FAQs, still haven't quite got a grip on scan probes, but I know enough to know that they can find acceleration gates (I think).
2) At the moment, after a string of embarassing losses, unless I hit a serious gravy train I will be forced to survive on tech 1 cruiser piracy or start NPC farming for a bit to recuperate my funds. Ideally I would like to replenish them through the means of relieving others.
3) There is a certain kind of EVE player that I have noticed whilst hopping around low-sec, scanning for viable targets, and I'm sure you have too. The mission runner. He's there, once you've narrowed him down to the middle of nowhere using your scanner, surrounded by acceleration gates and hordes of NPCs sitting comfortably without a care in the world.
4) I've checked out the ship setups page for NPCers, and some of the ship setups pack some mouth-watering loot.
Put those four things together and the post writes itself. What I'm asking is: Is it possible to fit a ship with a PvP set-up (including a scan probe launcher), locate the mission runner's complex and either enter it or wait there and take him down?
It seems to me like a perfect money-spinner. They would be unprepared for PvP mods like ECM and Nosferatus - with the right set-up to counter their NPCing set-up they shouldn't be a problem. They would be totally unprepared, probably not even packing WCS in order to sustain their tank. Essentially, you'd be catching them with their pants down.
I know it would be time-consuming but if you pulled it off the rewards could potentially by huge, and the risk relatively low. Who knows? If it works I might one day be able to afford the covert ops I spent a while training for.
What do you reckon? Good/Bad idea? If anybody has tried this I would like to hear your stories, even if it didn't work out. |

If you want to kill mission runners it would be advisible to do it in groups where you can have a covert ops frigate to find him then some Cruisers etc to kill him or you could try solo in a Recon ship with a probe on though it would be faster in a small group with a covert ops. Also mission running Ravens do fit Nos sometimes as it helps there tank and break the tank of the NPC though they would be quickly taken down if you knew which NPC they were fighting and you could change ammo to something they wouldnt be tanked against.

Actually ... most missionrunners I know of does not pack their ships full of faction loot. Infact you could if you wanted to do lvl 4 missions in normal setup, for example.. a Raven can do most lvl 4 missions without packing it with factionloot.
Personally I don't pack factionloot as my saying is that I need to afford loosing the damn ship, I do missions in low sec and I get jumped on by pirates in my missions quite frequently...
On deadspacemissions I am usually far away on the warpin points and can spot any incoming ships there quite fast and as I am moving towards some celestial object I can warp out pretty quick too. Same goes to none deadspacemissions... so I have had people warp in on me at around 7 km and once I saw their ship warp in I warped out... they would not have a chance to lock at all.
So if it is viable I don't know... some might actually pay you a ransom, I ... I would not, because my ship is not packed with loot I am afraid to loose. And you do get from a raven you loose about 40 million isk back and that covers the Zyd and Megacyte prices...

I use standard t1 gear in my mission ruunning ships for that reason. I've not been pasted in a mission deaspace yet, but I've nearly been so on a couple of occasions. It will come though, its fairly enevitable. But so far it me 100% pirates nill.
I think you'll find that the most you will get is t2 abs and LAR IIs. But no harm in giving it a go.

Just remember that in a good number of the level 4 missions, the second player present aggros the whole level. And while you cant mwd in deadspace, it seems that some of the tackler frigs and spider drones have no problems with this.

Im not sure if people are stupid enough to take faction fitted Ravens into low sec for mission running...but then again i do keep getting constantly surprised by peoples actions in this game.
But yeah, its possible to find mission runners sometimes, if the mission location can be found with scanners. Sometimes it cant. :(
I have high hopes for the new improved system scanning coming with Kali One in september myself. Anything that makes finding people easier is good in this game. Its way to easy to hide and run.

I fly a mega and have most of the time all 4 damage covert. I also often use a heavy NOS with plenty of drone support.
You are wrong about not even packing WCS. In most level 4 missions you get scrambled up to +3. So it is likely that a player has 2 WCS on his ship.
Mega's are often rigged with blasters which will make space dust of a small ship close by. If you do it, do it with a group and then, yes, it might be very profitable.
Maybe not faction loot, but T2 is often used I think.
Good luck hunting

Its really strange. Ive been doing lots and lots of lvl 4 missions and never even ONCE been prevented from warping out. I have checked the mission sites where it says the npc will have a certain warp scramble strength etc etc, but seriously, ive NEVER been scrambled.
Im beginning to think this is an urban legend...or Im just lucky as hell.

You've probably just taken them out before they got into range or took them out while you didn't need to warp out. The most annoying rats are the ECM using kind though.

Lucky as hell LOL
Lost 1x my mega because of this. Never again. It is easaly to see and so far only drones and frigs do it. Yesterday in Rogue drone harassment mission where 2 wee drones trying to scramble. They where the ones to die first

Edited by: slothe on 25/07/2006 11:48:09 i was doing this for a week or so. i had a covops and other ship in a station known to have a good agent.
i scanned out the players and tracked them down.
on the first day i ransomed one ship for 30 mill isk.
the second day i treid to ransom an eagle, he didnt pay , died and i got 10 mill loot. i then tried to ransom an ishtar, he didnt pay, again got around 10 mill loot. i then attacked a cerberus outside a station killed him but then 2 other players got the loot :/
3rd day all i could find was a ferox, tried to ransom him, but he clearly didnt have any isk so i let him live.
it can get tedoius with the porbes as they take on average 20-30 mins to really pinpoint someones location.
if you want any hints / tips feel free to convo me ingame i have lots of info that will help you.
you will need a covert ops + bs realistically tho.

yes they do.

it can be found a lot of the time, especially if you actually watch where players warp to cloaked above a station

yeah true. it seems the current scanning probes have a plate effect scanning so its more difficult to find objects above and below you. if they make it ball shaped i think matters would improve greatly.

I've been thinking that this would happen to Me all through My Mission running.
When I got Pod Killed by a Pie in 0.4 during My 14 Day Trial - I started to look at just what I'd need to cover My bases if I ever had to defend My turf again...
This put Me onto the "Spike" path, as well as other Nasty little PvP Weapons that We've all got access to out there...
Now My point - Yeah You'll more than likely be successful a majority of the time tracking and killing Mission-runners but watch out for the "Psychos".
Some Mission-runners ACTUALLY DO Kit for PvP and at the Higher levels of those Weapons as well (T2 & Faction).
Alot of Pies would then say at this point, "YEAH BABY - T2s & Faction let Me at 'em", but with that stated lets look at a Worst case Scenario I had with a Pie one Night (Er I should say - He had one Night with Me LOL)...
Im doing a Complex and not a Mission but it could easily be exchanged...
There I am Popping the Enemy and I see a Ship enter the Complex. I receive the Lock He puts on Me while I'm Killing NPC Pies. Anyways, He comes up Locked on My HUD and I'm like 60KMs from Warp in and Him.
He hits Me with a Missile (this is where it began to go badly for Him). I traverse and set the NPC Pies I'm still Fighting to a "Keep at" Distance, and I start on a Flanking move towards His left...
He trys to counter My actions by moving as fast as He could to My right. As He gets to 51KMs - I show Him My Insurance Policy the Hard way.
One Volley with Heavy Rails and T2 Ammo and Hes half way into Armor. He aligns to a Belt and one more Volley puts him at about 3/4 Structure. Now I see Him aligning and so I cycle down just as He warps out to safety.
Now I didn't chase this Guy and I have no malice towards Him - But try to take My ship after I've worked hard for It or the Loot I've sweated for, and You'll get all the Barrels I have - So to speak. Whats also notable is that I run three separate Weapon Systems while on OPs and I only Hit Him with one of 'em.
If I'd have Hit Him with all Three and then Scram'ed Him - It would have been a really Bad Night for Him. As it was I was Vindicated by following My "Path" and He learnt a good Lesson...
Remember - Mission Runners as a group are not Push-overs. Some Kit for PvP and find that their PvP Kit kills the NPCs just as well as an NPC Kit...
Respectfully,

Also remember that in some systems missionrunners band together... attack one and you might get hunted down.
