In EVE, Changes to ship models at present are done directly on the ships. But in reality, it seems once the model of a ship( or an aircraft, etc.) is finalized, it won't change anymore. Instead you will make modifications and call them Mark I, Mark II, Mark III...
So, why can't we have the same schema in EVE? Take Ishtar for example, its velocity is to be reduced in Hyperion. Instead of changing directly the ship itself, we can have Ishtar Mark II, whose velocity is slightly reduced.
Then we have a weakened Ishtar. Who will take it, since a stronger one is still in play?
To solve that we would have a balanced modification, f.e. velocity reduced but accuracy slightly improved. After all when you are all at a relatively same technology level, you won't have the ability to go far beyond others, right?
And this causes one ship to fit more than one situation - though not identically one ship.
Let's go a little beyond, if we have the schema above, we can let upgrading - OK, mostly upgrading - have more than one way to be achieved. Design guys can decide if a Thorax can be upgraded to Mark IV by simply applying a upgrade pack, or a Dominix should go through a big refit to become Dominix YC117, maybe Ishtar Mark VI is even unavailable to directly upgrade so that an Ishtar Mark VII can only be bought.
Suggestions and criticism both on thought and language are welcome |

Having an additional iteration of a ship implies it has improved in some way, and the Ishtar just needs the nerf bat straight off. Until the Ishtar doesn't do BS dps, with tracking high enough to do full dps on cruisers and usually enough to blap many kinds of frigs, with 100km range and has dessie speeds with it's MWD with reduced sig, then it will be back into the balance.
I have no issues though of the mark system being in place on ships that have been re-modeled, such as the Moa and Typhoon. Then if you want to keep the old mark, you could release limited BPCs and/or keep the ships current at the time as they are for future changes. |

They should just turn the ships built b4 the model change into limited edition ships and have them slowly fad out |

It's called balance. If they were going to do this, any ship that was due a nerf would just have a million built before the update, and we would never get the balance needed. Gameplay > RL Legacies. |

Can I haz tze old 10 droan Ishtoar Mark I ??
Why complicate things for complexities sake ? You realize how many market drop down tabs you will get, how this screws with balance and economics and absolutly everything?
Nope - Now where is the boot ?!

How about replacing all current and future schematics for said ship with the new version and let the old ones be. Eventually the unavailable version will get destroyed and only the new ones are available to purchase/manufacture. |

Speaking strictly of ship models and not stats or bonuses I could see the old models of ships being introduced as BPCs available via exploration missions (thinking abandoned shipyards) or LP rewards or something. Or if if they don't want to create a way to get them you could just add the option in the client to switch to the old models client side (so it doesn't effect anything server side).
When I say remodeled ships I mean ones like the Moa, Typhoon, Apocalypse, Crucifier, Scorpion and not t2 ships that have changed their t1 ship model (ex: a Nighthawk becoming a drake model) |

1. While in the real world you are probably correct, this is a video game and needs 'balancing' meaning everyone gets a change even if the change is game breaking for some pilots who then don't fly said ship anymore.
2. The more variants there are the more server processing is required ----> more TiDi.
3. The more variants there are the harder it is for Devs to balance the game as a whole because they have to keep balancing around 'grandfathered' variant ships. Yawn,-á I'm right as usual. The predictability kinda gets boring really. |
