and while this has been going on intel have delayed the deployment of their conroe processor in the uk, it was supposed to have been out yesterday and at the last minute they announced it could be at least another month

brilliant move.
in my opinion AMD are superior to intel and ATi are superior to nVidia anyway, this can only mean good things.
and before any nvidia fanboys start ranting im currently running a 6600, just until i can buy a decent ATi card.

on ATIs you may be right, but on the AMD point you're probably remembering 2002.
AMD has turned the tables in the heat issues.

AMD chips produce 2-3 times less heat than Intel chips (with the exception of the Core/P-M series)
The worst you could get is an SLI 7900 system with a dual core Pentium 4 Extreme Edition.
It would probably produce 500-600 watts of pure heat.

I like nVidia and AMD, they better not screw me up!
Though I've actually always run Intel processors, but my most recent one is a Prescott , AMD FTW.
But supposedly Conroe is actually as good as Intel have been saying it is?!? In which case I'll be sticking with Intel+nVidia perhaps.
(also, nVidia>ATI  )

All this means is that when it comes time to update your ATi drivers... now your graphics card AND your processor will both be crashing constantly. Or, maybe they'll go AMD's route and attempt to finally make a stable graphics card. Though, given my personal experiences with AMD processors... they'll be stable right up until they decide to burn out for no reason at all.

i've just ordered a machine fitted with a e6600 conroe which is one of the mid range chips, this is supposed to out perform the amd fx62 without being clocked

There were talks of this on the register (or was it inquirer?) a month or 2 ago, it was then posted that talks had fallen through.
Intresting stuff indeed, especially as ATI were heading towards the PPU direction. Looking forward to what will come from this.

Indeed. Everyone who knows processors knows AMD rules the coupe. And I have been using Radeons sense the 9800 Pro came out. Sure, nVidia owns at OpenGL. But how many game uses that? Doom 3? Get a grip, play it for a few hours and your done with it 
But seriously I think this is a match made in heaven as far as I am concerned. Two of the best chip makers pairing up, can't get better than that.

UT2004 uses OpenGL. In fact, OpenGL is the international standard for graphics programs, period.
The Conroe, by the way, is faster than AMD's processors and produces less heat. AMD does not "rule the coup."
And ATI cards, despite their speed, have their disadvantages, such as nonexistant drivers for any operating system other than 32-bit Windows.

i prefer nvedia, at the end this wont affect match. AMD processors will still work well with nvedia, thats because you build the processor than you make a graphic card for it , not the other way around

6600GT > x1600 Pro
however, X1900XTX > 7950 GTX
They're neck on neck, really, nowadays. It'll take a while before one struggles loose from the other.

So I guess this means no more Intel chipsets from ATI?
I've always preferred to run with AMD + nVidia; AMD for cheapness and overclocking potential, nVidia for better driver stability plus the 6600GT sweetspot.
My next computer will have a Conroe anyway, and most likely an nVidia GPU.
The pendulum looks like it's swinging to Intel's side at the moment, with the introduction of Conroe CPUs. I hope AMD has something up their sleeve here, because they're spending a good chunk of their cash reserve on this.

It is funny Intel and Nvidia seemed identical in marketing and reputation. AMD and ATI were the under dogs that later showed the big dogs how its done.
However the scare they have given both Intel and NVidia have saw the companies adopt a more, for lack of a better phrase, User friendly approach.
I now see both AMD and ATI just as money grabbing and cynical as Intel and NVidia were.
In all honesty though its a merry go round and unless one company makes a massive error it will continue this way. Which can only be good for the consumers. i.e. 'ME' 
At this moment in time Intel and Nvidia are top dogs beating anything the other two have to offer. Give it a few months though for the OMFG ATI RULZ thread.
I owe these companies nothing and my isk's will be going to whoever creates the best performance chip by the time i upgrade. Plain and simple!

There is a rumor going around that intel will make an offer of ú24 per share to buy ATI (as opposed to $21 per share that amd have offered).

I wouldn't worrie about AMD + Nvidia, I'd be much more worried if I wanted to go with Intel + ATI in the future.
