Mobile Tractor Unit
What are they? - i know what the words mean and what in theory they would be used for .. but can someone - who has the time - explain the what, how, why, SP requirements and how they are used for various activities. - and how they can be exploited or ganked and what that means for the owner. When would i use one, when wouldnt I. When should I, when shouldnt I.
Are there any other "new" (dont know when they were added) devices like the MTU that have been added recently? I thought i heard something about a mobile hanger or something ?
(i am not a new citizen .. but seems like the right place to ask these sort of basic questions)
thanks in advance. History is the study of change. |

They are frequently used by mission runners to collect all the loot while they are completing the mission. This makes looting much easier than flying between all the wrecks. Some people like to combine this with salvage drones to get some of the salvage work done by the time they're finished fighting.
This also makes them hot targets for gankers, who will loot/destroy the MTU to provoke an attack by the player, giving the ganker a LE flag and allowing them to destroy the mission runner ship. |

Normal modus operandi is to warp into mission pocket, drop the MTU, pewpew all of the things.
While things are exploding the MTU draws in all of the wrecks and loots them. When the pocket is clear pick it back up and scoop the loot.
Ninjas love them, they shoot the MTU and hope the mission runner is dumb enough to engage them in a pique. You can also use them as bait, proceed as per normal MO, but be in a PvP ship not a mission boat.

Its very hard to lose an mtu if you are awake. They can be scooped to cargo even if they are under fire. Ofc you have to be sitting within range of the mtu to scoop it. Folk will typically try and bump you off the mtu to prevent you from scooping as they kill it. Also the loot/salavage you get from missions is generally not worth the effort it takes to collect it. Blitz the missions for better profit. Ignore any attempts to bait you unless you are prepared for pvp. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

Mobile Tractor Unit -
What is it? - Mobile tractor unit is a personal mobile structure which, when deployed will begin tractoring all friendly or neutral wrecks and cans within range (125km) towards itself and looting them.
Skill Requirements - None
Useage - The most common useage is to drop it in a mission and let it tractor your wrecks/loot them and come back later to pick up the loot and/or salvage the wrecks.
Criminal Activities - While only you can access the inventory or scoop your own MTU, other players can shoot it which will only get them a suspect flag. When destroyed the MTU has a 50% chance to drop each item in its inventory just like a ship. MTUs can be scanned down with combat probes which means it may be destroyed if you leave it for a while.
Other Mobile Structures -
- Mobile Depots - These structures allow you to refit in space and store items. Again they can be scanned down and attacked however these structures have a 2 day reinforce timer.
-Mobile Cynosural Inhibitor- Prevents standard cynosural fields (but not covert ones) from igniting within 100km of the structure. The structure lasts 1 hour, cannot be reclaimed and the effects of multiple structures cannot overlap
-Mobile Siphon Unit- A Mobile structure designed to be deployed around a moon-harvesting POS which will steal a portion of the materials being mined/processed by the POS. Starbases will not automatically engage them, players engaging them won't be flagged.
-Mobile Scan Inhibitor- A 1-time use structure which will hide all ships within 30km of it from D-scan. The structure itself is still visible on D-scan.
-Mobile Mico Jump Unit- A deployable which allows any ship to jump 100km in the direction it is facing after a warm-up. One use structure.
-Encounter Surveillance System- Along with the expansion that released these mobile structures, Nullsec NPCs had their bounties reduced to 80%. To get the full payout you now need to deploy this structure which stores the missing part of the bounty in a pool as well as loyalty points (increases activity leads to extra payout up to 105% of the original). The structure can be accessed by any player and a choice made to share the pool between all contributors or to take all the whole pool (in tags). |

In theory, yes. They hold 27,000m3 of space. The issue is you eventually will need a ship that can hold all of that loot. You have to loot it before picking it up again, so in a bigger mining op, it is safer to just have a dedicated hauler moving stuff back to a station as you go.
In our mining ops, we never keep a rorq in the field. We keep it behind a POS shield so that we still get boosts, but it can't be attacked. My main hangs around to defend the miners, and my primary alt shuttles ore/ice from jetcans to our compression array continuously. That way if the miners are attacked in the field, we don't risk losing all of the ore/ice.
I rarely mine (only when I need the minerals to produce something specific), but when I do, I keep 4 light scout drones, one salvaging drone, and use an MTU. That way I can kill rats myself, the MTU loots them, I can salvage their wrecks, and then my alt hauls it all away. I always stay right next to the MTU though, so I can pick it up and warp off if someone I don't know shows up in the system. |

The use in medium minig ops (about 5-10 barges) is, you can let your howler drop one and the fleet can spread over the belt and just jetcan. I don't know if you can operate a second MTU without interfering with the first for use in larger mining ops (you can't deploy them ontop of each other and they will always target the nearest loot, maybe they will just play container ping-pong)
EDIT: 125km which is realy useful |

Yes they are used. But they are more trouble then they are worth. They attract folk (such as myself) who wish to shoot them. Its better just to fit a hauler (such as an orca) with a tractor beam mod.

noctis are more efficient but substantially more expensive. Mtus do not salvage for you while a noc can. All that said, there have been significant nerfs done to loot drops and salvaging. I rarely see Noctis anymore.

Hi OP,
You see...instead of adding new content in the last few releases, CCP decided to give the serfs of EvE more cake...er...deployables.
Gosh yes, little modules you can poop out of your ship for hours on end, that do all sorts of wonderf...um...meaningful...um...things!
Now the MTU one you mention, I like to call those the carebear Kinder Surprise. If you shoot at them long enough, they will crack open and poop out the delicious candy inside!
Sadly, these modules did actually provide content in the beginning, when carebears set their drones to 'agressive' and went AFK while mission running; but CCP quickly put a stop to that nonsense, and wrapped the wee little bears in moar bubblewrap by ensuring drones set to 'agressive' no longer attacked another player shooting an MTU. That gave many content creators a sad.
But there is redemption...many now use these for artistic purposes, drawing peens and phalluses of various shapes and sizes outside of trade hubs and the like. Yay!
