I was very curious to how the DEVs and other eve players think about the idea of drastically redesigning eve to fit in the with the other games that CCP is developing. I lot of these issues of combining Project Legion/Valkyrie and even a lot of cool ideas regarding FW/SOV/Expansion of space/WIS/game play in general seem to be met with "EVE and that just doesn't work well together".
Whether its legacy code issues, core game play mechanic that's so closed off they can't do it, or simply "no that's just wrong". It seems funny that our big open world is so handicapped when it comes to making it more open and content filled. I'm wondering about the time, effort, feelings, etc of possibly developing EVE 2.0, being a new building block for eve to sit on top of, while keeping the game/characters/data/etc the same.
My personal feelings:
CCP has this master plan that I feel eve cannot fulfill in the state that it's in.
While it would take a great amount of time and effort, I think It would be worth the investment to tear down the old building and rebuild it from the ground up to support everything that may come..

Setting aside for a moment that we're on something like EVE 22.5 already, rebuilding from scratch is a very good way of ensuring that you will end up with two useless products: the old one that you didn't maintain, and the new one that doesn't work.
Beyond that, what parts do you feel as if they can't fit in? No amount of recoding will make a game that requires 1Hz ticks to resolve the kind of massive scale of conflict on one tier work well with a game that requires 30Hz ticks to resolve its small-scale conflicts. Different types of gameplay require different back-ends. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

Lol, completely understandable.
But I'm more or less talking about the core work. For example Valkyrie will never work in eve, ever. Dust has its minor roll but i still doubt that they would have the freedom to integrate it seamlessly into eve like Valkyrie would if it was, well, an option.
While considered taboo, no you cannot change the ticks/etc, but you can change the way players go about the content in the given area of space. Allowing for more smaller and larger conflicts to occur. How systems can be accessed, and in which future manner should they be allowed to be accessed by(other than a star gate or a wormhole). Space is very large and open, however in our submarine simulator it manages to feel cramped, bottle necked and static, versus a large open immersive non-static world. |

methinks you're doing something wrong. It could be because I've only been playing around a year, but eve is very much a large open immersive world to me.

To be honest, Eve 2.0 as you suggest it goes against what Eve Online is. Eve Online constantly evolves instead of being reinvented.
A reinvented Eve would divide the player base and spell the end for both games, as it has to other games in the past. A constantly evolving single game has much better chance of survival.
The most common reason people suggest an Eve 2.0 is because of "how long it takes to catch up" which shows how much they miss the point of Eve Online. Its not about catching up. Its about teamwork and being good enough to win.
You can be 80% capable of a vet in about 20% of the time. You can be par on a vet in a specific ship in probably 20% of the vets SP, but you don't need to be on par, just good enough with a few friends.
In regard to code, I think the majority of the Eve codebase has been rewritten a few times, but there are probably a few systems that haven't been touched since launch.
So, depending on how you view it, we could be on Eve 3.5 or Eve 7.5, depending on how you look at it. The work was simply done to update the existing game and codebase, not branch off into something else, that divides the players. |

You do realize op, that eve is already building eve 2.0 right?
This is why we are not 'getting new stuff' because old, incomplete and broken crap needs to be fixed first. Thats all.
Eve, Valk and Legion COULD all work together, but you won;t play them at the same time. Each can easily do different roles that effect the others. There is no need to start from scratch, as they are just redoing what they have currently. These treads are getting lame. "EVE 2.0"
Every time this is suggested, and it gets suggested often, I have to remind myself to stay cool, that the person posting it isn't clever enough to use the search function on the forum to see if their idea has come up before, and that they're not clever enough to put it in the proper forum to begin with, and on some level, it may not be their fault that they're not clever enough for those things. So there's no point in getting angry about it. It's difficult, but I can restrain myself when needed.
While the suggestion is as annoying this time around as it was the last 50 times it was suggested, because at worst it speaks to a lack of understanding of EVE Online as it is, I have to remind myself that the person posting it isn't clever enough for the things mentioned above, so they probably aren't clever enough for a proper understanding of EVE to begin with, and likely won't be around these parts for very long anyway. So I can take some measure of solace in your imminent departure.

These new offshoots need to comply with EVE, not the other way around.
Actually... Most of us would prefer that these other games did not exist at all and 100% of the effort was put into EVE.
I get wanting to grow a larger customer base.. but if EVE where to die, it all dies. Valkyrie can turn into a joke like dust pretty much is right now and no one will really give a damn that plays EVE for EVE.
Only thing that really needs changed in EVE is the removal of AUR and all related features. But the fact signs are showing that going the other way is really the only problem we are facing when it comes to keeping the game what we want.

CCP can rebuild EVE however they want.... so long as I'm the only player in the game with a "God mode" cheat code so I can blast dreads with a single shot from a bomber... cloaked.
Because if CCP is going to pooch things royally, then at least pooch them in my favour -- especially when I'm flying on 151.

From a technical perspective CCP made some early choices for the architecture that today cause scalability issues like the choice of (Stackless) Python as language. CCP worked and still work on minimizing the effect of this, but it can't be removed completely.
Then there are game design decisions that in hindsight were bad choices, like Titans and T2 BPOs, to name just two cases.
However, even if there are good technical and game design reasons for a complete rewrite from scratch, it's simply not feasible to do, for the immense resources it would require, while you have a working product to maintain trying to hold the (stagnant) playerbase. iveeCore: PHP library for calculation of industrial activities, now with Crius support |

Its taken over 10 years and god alone knows what that equates to in actual man-years of programming effort, to reach the point we are at now.
EVE in its implementation is still cutting edge, only the military comes close in raw processing power.
CCP's time and money would be better spent fixing the issues most of us know the game has, rather than throwing the baby out with the bathwater and coding "EvE 2.0" from scratch.
