Up until now I have been flying Gallente, and I like them i really do, but.. to make them work for me I really need to put in a lot of SP.
I also do a lot of mission running primarily for the standings to get a good refine rate. I was thinking of putting my gallente skill training on hold and training up to fly a ferox for level 3's and go back to Gallente in the distant future.
Good plan? and if it is a good plan, what are the skills I should be thinking about to really make the most out of a mission runner ferox?

And what's so bad about using a Brutix? It's drone bay is 2x as big as a ferox. And the ferox only has 5 rail slots as opposed to the Brutix's 7...I don't understand your reasoning for wanting to switch. --------------------- Radix Malorum est ISK |

I do rate the brutix as a great ship for pvp and generally living in low sec. But for pure mission running, lets face it, killing npcs with missiles is just easier to train for, and easier to do. I don't need to put as much sp into missles as I need to put into gunnery to get a Ferox to work for me.
On top of that, when i do get into level 4's the raven's just a hop skip and a jump away in skills to fit it ready for level 4's. To effectively fly a mega or a dominix for level 4's is a hell of a lot more work in SP, and requires a lot more work to fight what with worrying about optimals, and ranges and all that nonsense.
A nice noob friendly mission running missile chucker for agent work to get my standing up is what I'm after.

TBH, there is not that much of a difference between SP needed for a level 4 Domi, and a Level 4 Raven.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind.

For level 3's in a Ferox the only skills you'll really need to train are missile skills and passive shield tanking skills.

I suspect the topic will get flamed, touching as it does on balance.
But based on my own newb experience, what you're planning makes sense (and indeed, it's what I'm doing at the moment.) I have no grave objections with the devs' continued approach to missile/turret/racial balancing; but for low SP mission running I think missile boats have much to reccomend them. Low SP missioning in a Brutix is adequate, but if you have to align early and warp in and out, low SP guns and drones are somewhat trickier to DPS with than the very straightforward Ferox.
My .02 and I hope this doesn't devolve into a gunnery-missile discussion when the issue - squeezing into L3s with lowish skillpoints - makes the advantages clear-cut.

But doing L3's in a brutix is such slow going work... sure it tanks well, but all the npcs keep flying in too close with railguns and too far away with blasters. It's such slow going work. Drones help.. but bleh, I'd rather just cave in, grab a ferox and just get things done. I'm only doing the missions for the standings. I don't even like mission running.

Yeah that's my issue, I'm an industrial character at the end of the day, bu pretty much all agents will go through times of giving me kill missions, also ni my time in eve I've had to train some amount of combat skills, enough to do minimal pvp and again.. deal with the times my marketting agent sends me on 4 kill missions in a row.
I don't want to train and train and train millions of SP in gunnery YET. My list of industrial skills I need is so so so painfully long still. I need a ship that is good with lower levels of SP, and to be honest, at low SP levels Caldari seem to be the best.
When I have more of the industrial skills, I'll go back and train up gunnery some more and sit back in my lovely brutix. But for the time, I need something I can use half decently for the now.
