i spent all afternoon outfitting my ship and training the necessary skills and have spent the same amount of time searching for something to kill. what the hell is there to kill and how do i find it? this is getting a bit frustrating. when i find a pirate there is already 5 guys attacking him.

well, go belt hopping. if theres nothing much in your home system, go to a neighboring system that has lots of belts.
If not that, have you tried missions? __________________________________

Err... yeah. Try the missions...
*scratches her head*
Come asking for help on something to kill before you even try the most obvious thing that going through the tutorial should have told you?
A good portion of missions are kill, some will be courier, but finding a kill mission isn't hard. When you do they give you a bookmark to a place that spawns 5, 15, 25 etc NPC pirates that are pretty much yours alone.
Also, if you want to go ratting (belt hoping) don't try in in the starting areas. They're usually some of the busiest systems, both with new people and with older noobs with nothing better to do than harass new players. Make a jump or two out and try those, you should be able to handle the rats in the belts in any areas 0.8-1.0 without a problem. -------

Except that 0.9 and 1.0 don't spawn :) ---- EVE-Central.com - Cross-region market view and trade finder |

You can always step into lo-sec space too. Plenty of peeps to try and kill there.

lol...something tells me im in trouble if i run across either of you :P
appreciate responses. i have been spoiled from playing other mmo's where there were endless spawns at your fingertips. EVE is really alot different in that regard and although i have to admit i was a bit frustrated yesterday i do like having to go hunt for pirates to be honest....takes a little adjusting i guess but in a good way. took the advice, went to lower security areas, hopped asteroid belts (ratting?) and found some trouble. finally got to practice with my new weapons.
i kind of blew through the new player tutorial so no dyestra i missed the emphasis on missions being a primary source of npc pirates...all mine seem to be freaking deliveries, but thanks for reminding me...you can *stop scratching* now.

I think its the way you used the terminology that got people a little confused here.
fyi "pirates" usually refers to player pirates, they live in 0.4 sec space and lower. You also get empire pirates who use wardeks or canflagging to fight in >0.5
"rats" is used for NPC pirates. these are found in aseroid belts in <0.8 or you can also do missions. Generally security\command agents will do combat while administration\personel\etc agents will do courier missions. -----

If you are looking to do kill missions then try this. next time you are docked in the upper rite corner is a "I" in a tiny blue box. click it and select agents. you will get a list of agents in different categories. stick with command, survailance, secutiry, as those will give you kill missions. You will also find out what agents are available to you as most of the time the agents dont tell you that you can you the next lvl mission agents. if you are galente,I say IF because atm I can see only a big "!" where your pic should be lol. then look for federal navy or logistics stations. as they usually have things to kill for you.
