I think adding a*****pit view to EVE Online would add an amazing new dimension to the game. A view that is maybe limited by the ship's actual*****pit (of course this would be a little harder then just adding a "fight person point of view). Allowing the player to move his character's sight (head/eyes) in any foward cone-like direction out all windows, maybe at some consoles (with possible live stats on deployed Drones, targets, etc.) etc.
I just think this feature would be amazingly fresh and fun.
Anyways, :D

Uh. Yeah. the problem is you're sitting in a pod that doesn't let any light in operating from a neural feed of external cameras. -----------------------------------------------------------

Turn off the monitor and You have a very good representation of what Your character can see with her eyes.

Yeah I thought they said that, but the models of the ships have visable*****pits and what not. Even still, a first person type view would be cool.

Just read the backstories, and you'll see what I'll explain you now.
The Ship is controlled by your pod, or better, you sitting in the pod. The pod is filled with a liquid, to protect you. The actual connection with the ship are neurallinks in your A**. There is no actucal visual signs, the only help is Aurora.

Because the ship has a crew. Player character is the only person who has totally nothing to do with those windows :)

Edited by: Dinilysia on 28/07/2006 07:35:17 The pod pilot has a neural bypass coupling, feeding him/her with information vital to piloting the ship successfully through space.
What you see on your computer screen is exactly what is projected to the pod pilots senses through that neural link by the ships hardware. The external view of your ship comes from a cloaked camera probe circling your ship.
Someones just never heard of inertial dampers and anti grav generators. If i had a choice, I would prefer to pilot my ship as the npc's do but, no can do.

I don't really see how all of the RP explanations for how the camera works are relevant. Usually it seems that the game concept comes first (3rd person only view) and the RP explanation follows (camera drones). It would be an easy fix to say "oh thanks to such and such device, we are now able to see combat from a first person point of view." This is exactly what they are doing with freighters: trying to add freighter loot cans and then making RP explanations in the form of news bulletins.
However, I still disagree with the OP. First person perspectives are much better when the ship must be manually directed and fired, in a game like Freelancer. In EVE, you are more of a manager, simply telling your ship which targets to fire at and then a calculation is performed to see if you hit. I don't think a first person view would be beneficial to this kind of gameplay.
If you are just looking for some added ability to spice up the GUI (other than just change the colors and resize the windows) I'm all for that.

I think it's a good idea - if only for making videos where my ship isn't always in shot...
