You know I enjoy MMO's. But besides EVE there hasnt really been any ground breaking, new idea or even new spin on games.
WoW is fun for awhile, not a bad game no matter how much people slam it, you dont have that large of the maket if you make a **** game. But unless you enjoy power gamming and doing raids, which I dont, you can lose interest fast, which I did.
Saga of Ryzom, kinda EVE like in that they let you be whatever you want to be. Fighter no problem, fighter-mage no problem, hell even a fighter-mage-crafter-harvester, just perform in each catagory and you level up. Great idea and open gameplay. Also nonstandard approch to the game world. Fun and playing it as my second MMO atm, but lacking in a large community.
Star Wars Galaxies. I beta'd it when EVE was released. Well EVE won out hands down for my playing time. I would have liked to have revisited it, but not since they ****** it up. Kinda sad really. No future me thinks.
Everquest 2. I had such high hopes. **** how could it not be good? All I can say now is, ****, how could I have been so wrong! The most unimaginative game play and world design I've had the misfortune to experience. I could explain why I feel this way but I'd rather have someone drop a 15lb bowling ball on my nuts from a two-story building.
Vangaurd Saga of Heros. Hmmm, some great ideas. Caravaning, classes that are desgined to be a true support class, as in they reach their full potential when they are defending another character, such as the paladin. We'll have to wait and see, looks to be PvE heavy and maybe a little to EQ2-like for me.
Warhammer Online. Great PnP/miniature game its being built on, its all about war (sweet), it has an Oveur-like front man, a Bladerunner like dreary setting, RvR combat sounds cool, and then I seen some game play video. OMG it was a ******* WOW clone! Same bright primary color shading, exact same style of combat, exact same animations. Ohh well still worth a look and maybe even a months subscription.
Lord Of the Rings Online. Things have gotten quiet over there. Interested to see how they are going to handle magic in the game. I'm sure it will get at least a months subscription from me, I just have to visit The Mines of Moria. I liked the books and the movie so I have hope for the game. Not high hopes, just hope, trying to be realistic here.
Anarchy Online. Like the semisci-fi setting. Just way to aged for me.
Guild Wars. Okay WTF ever!
This is the one I'm really waiting for, this is the one company who I think has "gotten it", well besides CCP.
I'll start out with a question? What is the average age of most gamers? Well depends of where you look but I think its 28 or 29. So why do all these companys make their games like its going to be played by 14 year-olds?
Age of Conan. Rated mature...for mature players... and its about ******* time! I'm sick of the WoW style graphics and G-rated combat. And no I'm not talking mature as in boobies, I mean in the way they handle combat. I want EVE-level facial customization and not just for the face but for the whole body. *Hey MGRL guys, yes you can adjust the size of your package, no more pretending* I want to see someones head go flying when I chop their neck. I want to pick the areas on an opponents body to do damage to. I want Oblivion style ranged combat. I want my swing to carry thru and hit the other guy standing next to my target. I want to scale walls and jump from roof top to roof top as a thief. I want a mage who isnt just a support-class but who wades into melee combat and can still casts offensive spells. I want horses to be more than just a quicker way to travel from place to place. I want...ahh **** it just watch the video Age Of Conan you'll see what I'm talking about.
And if my link is torqed, as I'm bad at linking stuff, could someone fix it?

I was looking forward to giving LOTRO a go, but just read a recent update saying that its all based in the northwest of the map meaning you wont be seeing the mines, or a big black tower with a giant eye ball on top, or any pretty white city built into the side of a cliff anytime soon. all reserved for future expansions....i pray they dont cut too much map area out on release....i bet you wont even be able to get hammered in the prancing pony...lol

I have yet to see an MMO other than MUDs or eve which allows any tangible level of career or skill paths. I want my character to be unique and have its own style. A game where every skill path has some use in any combination.
I hated WoW for every character being exactly the same.
I thought about LotR, but after Turbine's performance on DDO online, I don't know. The game was sound. They just buggered everything else up imagainable.

Heard some good things about Age of Conan, also I like the look of Thrones of Chaos. I am also interested to see how Star Trek Online will turn out. But I'm keeping away from any games that have crazy grinding, I dont mind to grind my way up to max level but the grind has to stop there, if games developers cant think of anything fun to do in an end game then they are not getting my money.

Edited by: Mchart on 30/07/2006 21:22:30 Edited by: Mchart on 30/07/2006 21:21:10 I was /really/ excited about Imperator Online, but mythic cancelled it to work on warhammer. It's my view that Imperator would have killed /a lot/ of MMO's simply because of how refreshing of an experiance it would have given players. It definatly would have been 'The' top sci-fi mmo out there if completed.

The rumor I heard is that WoW was suppose to be Warhammer Online, but something happened.

If Warhammer had been 40k I would have given it a good consideration. But sadly it's not. It would be nice if they had taken a bit of a chance. Instead they went with the EQ/WoW clone to boost sales instead of trying something daring and different.
Oh well.

Saying that Warhammer is in any way a WOW/EQ clone is so freaking ignorant. Warhammer has been around for over TWENTY years. It has a long established story and art style.
If anything, the game has far more in common with DAoC so far.
Here's a site with a ton of official Warhammer art done over the last two decades or so: http://warhammer.hardwired.hu/gallery/fantasy.html

Age of Conan, and Warhammer Online, I'll both try. Gonna try Huxley as well, concept is awesome, hope they can pull it off. And how exactly do you adapt to potentially getting killed by everybody you kill? -Nero Scuro If I miss you, it will be because my tracking is a little off. - Grey Area |

Give me Earth and Beyond.
With more solar systems.
With more high level content.
With less limited PvP and a higher death penalty, and better PvP balance.
That would be amazing.

Okay you'll have to read my take on it again. And the game play video that someone shot shows a WoW clone. As a matter of fact if someone had postsed that WarHammer video without audio, and said it was a video of WoW's new expansion with a revamped user interface...you or anyone else would have been hard pressed to see a different game in the making. I dont even think combat will be any different than WoW besides the added extra bonus attack when you build your moral to a certain level.
Is it WoW in gameplay...maybe not,and I sure it isnt, but that gameplay video sure was damning. I have hopes for it...but all they had to do was get ride of the flipping Saturday day morning cartoon look.
Do you have passion for Warhammer liscense, yes I can see that. And yes I respect that. But that still doesnt change the fact it ******* looks like WoW. Warhammer...or is it WoW?

I really find the new WoW pvp laughhable.
However you will like it if you like syphalus and sandworms.
As for the Warhammer game first of all WoW is a copy of Warhammer also it seems that WARhammer is at least trying to get aq better PvP system going. -----------------------------------------------

1. Community 2. Content 3. Gameplay
Get all three of those right, and you'll have a good MMO. At the moment, not much interesting on the horizon as far as I'm concerned. WoW's expansion I'll probably get once you can but it in a store without a preorder. Tabula Rasa kind of sounded interesting. Everything else I've heard of sounds more like the usual EQ-grindfest.

It's called EVE my friend
Seriously, that would be pretty awesome.
What I dislike about majority of MMO's is the setting: every single one is dungeons and dragons. Give me sci-fi any day of the week. I played SWG for over a year until NGE hit and then I gave it up completely. Then I stumbled on EVE and never looked back.
Lord of Rings would be nice if they made it like the movies and not like EQ2 which I can't stand. It should be darker and more mature. None of the g-rated AOL crap you get in EQ2.
Another MMO I would like to see: Battlefield 2 except a huge continent and 24/7 battles. Think of Planetside except with modern day equipment. And like Planetside you gain in experience and able to unlock ranks and weapons and vehicles. Imagine 300 people going at it with jets, helos, tanks, and special ops........drools.

Just been looking at some vids etc from age of conan, and I must admit it looks interesting. After 2 and a half years of EvE, I think a bit of fantasy would be nice for a change, but most of the stuff out there atm is a bit crap. Thanks for the info OP

Edited by: Guillame Herschel on 31/07/2006 22:51:45 Edited by: Guillame Herschel on 31/07/2006 22:50:18 Meridian 59 is still up and running. All expansions are up and they even updated the old 2D graphics engine to DirectX 3D with dynamic lighting. It was the first commercial MMO, PvP was nonconsensual almost everywhere (the newest noobs have a guardian angel for a short while), and there's a substantial death penalty (you lose everything you were carrying and you lose a level). There's even some quests to do in the Underworld before you return to the land of the living.
Players bought the M59 assets from 3DO when they took the game off line, and have been running it for themselves ever since. The subscriptions only cover part of the outfits' expenses, but they love the game so they keep it running.
CCP, when you are ready to throw in the towel, let the players by the games' assets and keep running it for as long as we care to (although, reproducing Tranquility is probably a bit harder than reviving Server 101 )

Edited by: Darzerb on 01/08/2006 05:15:22 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Darkfall. This is truly a PVPers dream come true(if it ever does come out).
FFA PVP Full looting Twitch Combat Player made and owned settlements No classes, over 500 skills Every piece of armor and weapon can be crafted by players Resources placed throughout the world as to require player conflict Player controlled ships, which entails ship combat and the ability to invade from the sea Player Mounts
Those are the features I can think of off the top of my head. But this game will be very impressive if it delivers what the devs have said it will deliver. Even if it delivers half of the features it will be an awesome game. The devs have said the game's combat will be similar to Mount & Blade's, so that's good news also.
