Mote in God's Eye. and Moat Around Mercheson's Eye By Larry Nivan and Jerry Pournelle.
Foundation's Edge Foundation and Earth (for the missing homeworld theme) Isaac Asimov and perhaps the rest of the foundation series.
Schlock Mercenary (online comic) Not a novel but has some very good themes and ideas for science fiction. Particularly before the terraport was introduced and they used jump gates.
If I wasn't at work I could probably come up with a lot more.

If the devs weren't amazingly inspired by the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Hamilton I'll stick a very small needle in my pinkey. Wasp drones anyone?
Originally by: Panzer Goddess I podded wrangler, and all I got was this lousy forumban.

Asimov. Somewhere in the foundation series. A ship is on the run and passes the waiting lines at jump gates by flashing the imperial code or something. JUMP GATES! But those books cover a whole lot of years. And EvE would fit so far somewhere in the middle of it. Low End Minerals Trader Based in Verge Vendor; Alentene VI-6. Free delivery when the cargo is Passive Targeters or over 100k m3. Safe empire space only. Ammo delivered free. And possible in low |

Check out Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Its a great sci-fi thriller/mystery detective. A lot of what is used in the book (clones ect...) seem very similar to eve. Im sure you will love it.

Donno if there taking part in an enviroment like EVE but if you like Sci-Fi you HAVE to read the following books.
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. Simply the greatest Sci-fi book ever writen.
Dune by Frank Herbert. Legandary book that comes close second to the above.
Hidden Empire (Saga of the Seven Suns Series) by Kevin J Anderson. Epic book on a collosal scale.

I highly recommend the Risen Empire by Scott Westerfield, it reminds me very much of the Amarr Empire.

Ender's Game is about playing a video game without knowing that it is actually IRL. In space.

The "Honor Harrington" series by David Weber is fantastic. Starts with "On Basilik Station" and goes from there. He does get a bit wordy at end of the series, but hours and hours of good reading.

I suggest you read Pandora's Star and its sequel Judas Unchained by Peter F. Hamilton. They take a while to read but are great and a lot like EVE.
