Hello everyone.
I have been playing the game for 6 days (im on a trial) but ill buy the game for sure.
But im totaly lost here.I mean... i know i want to be a fighter. But i don't know what to buy. Somepeople told me: buy a rifter it rocks, put 3x 200mm AC and a roket luncher in it, so i did. But now for my 3rd ship there is a lot of "diferent" opinions. I have been advised to buy a destroyer, but from what i see in the forums there are a lot of people who just "skip" the destroier and go straight to the cruisers. this have made me wonder if it is worth spending money on this ships and then have to change them. And giving no use to them in the future. Other guy told me to buy a crow (since i have a condor already). He told me to go range atack instead of using the close DPS style.
I mean... i know that everyone has their own style and ideas. but since i am new in the game i really don't know what to do. and i am afraid of going to buy the "wrong" ship and spend my money for nothing.
Could you guys enlighten me about this ships and the Range and Close DPS?
Oh and my main aim is PVP.
(BTW i heard Range dps is easier to evolute cuz it needs less number of skills evoluted)
Thx a lot in advance guys.
Best regards Patriota

This is my first post on here as I only started played about 2 months ago but let me tell you a little about my experience.
I am Caldari, I don't know which race you are though. My first combat ship was the Caldari Merlin frigate with 2 railguns and 1 missile launcher (couldn't fit more due to insufficient power). I really enjoyed picking off rats from around 10 km, starting out with missiles at around 16km and then activating the rails once they were close enough. You might have trouble hitting them if they come too close, therefor I would advise on picking up some enhancing skills like Motion Prediction. After switching to a Cruiser too quickly (I lost a Moa that my corp had sponsored) I switched to a Rifter which is indeed a great ship. Fitted with said autocannons and a missile launcher I love it. If you put an Afterburner in it you will be fast enough to get within autocannon range rather quickly. Once you are in range you'll just make their heads spin orbiting at around 800m ... I found rats to die easily without even hitting me.
From my experience I would recommend you stick to frigates right now until you really can afford a cruiser (afford to lose it too). Just play around with different guns and missiles to see which you like best. Maybe even have two ships, one for long range, the other for short range.

Sorry, didn't see you already owned a Rifter the first time I read your post. Maybe buy a longer range frigate for a change and see which you like better. Just don't go for Cruisers until you have the skills to use Cruiser equipment and have enough money to back it.

It depends on where you want to go. Minmatar uses projectile guns and have a more 'in your face' approach, caldari uses hybrids and are more used for long range attacks. Typically you could state that minmatar will perform quite nicely in PVP and Caldari will be uber for PVE.
If you want to combine the PVP and PVE you could think about leaving minmatar and go Gallente as both Gallente and Caldari make use of the same hybrid guns. I use Caldari mainly for PVE and my Gallente ships for PVP, there's exceptions ofcourse but in general it'll hold.

I'd agree with this statement up to the point where you start looking at Caldari EWar ships.
To Patriota, the Caldari Ewar ships (blackbird, rook, scorpion for example) are extremely effective in PVP due to the way the electronic warfare systems works at the moment, but they're not ideal for solo work as they generally have poor damage dealing capability.

I found the Merlin to be a good combat frigate, fitting it with 2 hybrid guns and a missile launcher ... even better if you can fit a second launcher. I used either 125 or 150 mm railguns, some of the better T1 ones if you can afford them. Regarding ammo, I think I used Plutonium or Uranium charges. If I recall it right, they gave a range malus but did quite some nice damage.
Also, I used a Ballistic Control System which allows you to launch missiles faster and a similar thing for hybrid turrets, I don't remember the name of it though. The need for an Afterburner should be self-explaining, I would also recommend using a shield extender and shield booster. A Power Diagnostic System granting a bonus to shield and capacitor recharge rate is also quite helpful.
I am not really sure if you will be able to fit all these, I don't have access to the game right now and cannot check. Well, I hope you will find some of this useful.

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 31/07/2006 11:24:51 don't buy a destroyer, keep using your frigate for level 1 missions and when you're ready for a cruiser (both skill as cashwise) then upgrade to a level 2 agent.

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 31/07/2006 11:40:31 You should be able to do some lvl 2's in a Rifter but others you can't really. Also because you're new you lack a whole lot of supportskills that really make a big difference, you lack experience on how to use your ship and how to deal with enemies. In other words you'll get blown up quite a bit.
For missions I'd get a Caracal, great ships as they use missiles, which typicially take less skills to operate well and are less of a strain on the pilot as you don't have to deal with optimal range, transversal speed and whatnot. Just target, wait till it's in range and fire. Also, as it's a ranged ship (caldari) your defense comes from being outside the enemy's range. It really can't tank too well as the shields are a bit crap and it doesn't have a lot of cap to play with. Simply stay at 40km from the enemy and pepper him with missiles.
If you want to go minmatar I'd go with a rupture, it's the best allround cruiser.

Caleb: D'oh!
Patriota: It's possible to do up to level three missions in a rifer (look up any post by Neckbone), but I really don't reccommend it. Take Caleb's advice and use a caracal if you want easy mission running while you're learning the mechanics of EVE. A quick and easy fitting for it is 5 assault launchers, 2 large extenders, 3 rat-specific shield hardeners, and a PDS and BCU.
If you're planning to solo-PVP, go with Minmatar. More skill intensive to fly well, but very good performance.

My advise is to buy whatever ship looks like it meets you style of play. I recently switched from Gallente to Caldari for making an upgrade from destroyer to battlecruiser. Why? Because I found that I liked passive shield tanking and wanted to give missiles a try. At the same time, I can switch back to Gallente if I decide that to give blasters a go. Fly whatever you want.
As for cost, if you decide that you don't want to fly a certain type of ship, you can always resell it. You might even beable to sell it for more than you paid for it. Unless you are paying far more than market price for the ship, the most you would lose is the cost of insurance. If you can't afford to spend the insurance money then you are breaking the golden rule of don't fly what you can't afford to lose. So, is it worth spending money on this ships and then have to change them? Sure it is, you will always be changing ships, and as you continue to play ISK won't be as much of an issue.
As for destroyer verses cruiser, I went with a destroyer because of the low skill requirements, I could then focus on getting my support skills trained. Now that my support skills are better, I am making the jump strait to battlecruisers. (about 2 hours of traing left to go)
Again I recommend picking a ship that suite your style of play, there are lots of resources on the forums to help you know what the strengths/weaknesses of the different ships are. Trying stuff out for yourself is part of what makes this game fun.

The Caracal can be an extremely tough nut to ***** if it has extenders and invulnerability fields on, I don't even use a booster for mine and rather rely on its large numbers of hitpoints and high resistances to see me through fights, and then let the shield regenerate on its own after a fight.
For PvE, I'd almost argue there is no better ship - the ability to do the same, full damage from up to 80km or so with decent skills, a hard shield tank, no tracking or falloff issues, cheapness, and ability to change damage types to whatever the target calls for. Great for beginners while you learn more about the depth of EVE.

'sup, good Patriota.
Just my opinion, but at 6 days into the game I wouldn't be too worried about getting the next/bigger ship.
There are a lot of useful skills in Electronics, Mechanics, Navigation & Engineering which can make your current frigate(s) much more effective than it is now... and these general skills will also work on any ship you'll get in the future.
I'd suggest rounding out some of the non-Spaceship Command skills first, while trying out various fittings (long/short range, etc) on your relatively cheap frigates. Heading straight to Cruiser without the skills to back it up might be bad for the ol' wallet. _______
