With just 1 graphics card?
My mobo dont got no 2nd vid card slot...
I heard rumors about some sapphire ATI card being able to do said trick?
Anyone with brains able to assist with more details?

any ATI, preferably XFX, and NOT SAPHIRE!! of the 6 cards of theirs that I have dealt with in the past, 5 were burnt out or did so in very short order and the one lucky one, was replaced before it burnt out. |

If they had an XFX card avaliable i'd go for it no questions asked, had a nvidia XFX9800 card in the past, it burnt out about the 1.5 year mark , sent it off under warranty and they sent me back an X285
but 5/6 burning out with sapphire is a hell bad record, im going to assume you have more than the stock-standard case fans and have tied down the tangly mess of wire doom so it's got good airflow too - which makes it even more bad.
I just want to be 100% sure on which model card to get which will support the 3 monitors. My current nvidia card runs just fine (still under 6mths old) but my younger sister's vid card is dying so i thought i'd turn the situation into a win by giving myself an early Xmas present of a new card and a 3rd monitor and giving her my "old" card.

Three monitors is piece of cake these days.
You can do 3 pci cards, one monitor on each card.
You can do 1 pci express card with two heads and one pci card. Two monitors on pci express card, third monitor on pci card. Or get one pci express card with three heads, 2 dvi heads and hdmi head, 3 dvi heads, etc. Connect 2 monitors to to dvi heads, third monitor to hdmi.

Nothing wrong with Sapphire, man....they make solid cards. XFX on the other hand has gotten a reputation recently for making custom PCB's that are more cheaply made than the reference boards...notably the 5770's with cheapo filters and only one crossfire bridge. |

I do it with a Sapphire Radeon 6950 -- but to make it work right you need an active VGA adapter, which will run you another $30. |

Thankyou kind sir!
I tried with my current Nvidia card with the two DVI ports and the extra port and it goes "wahhhhhhhh only 2 at once i cant handle 3 go away" hense the new card search!
To the other guy that suggested multiple cards - i would, but the motherboard i have is a midget and only has the 1 slot open. Not a technological marvel but runs 5 eve clients on high quality perfectly, just i need the 3rd screen to save my sanity as digging thru eve windows when your'e in a hurry is hell

Right, I tried everything I could think of to trick the computer into thinking it should work, but ended up failing. I eventually went with this, and am completely satisfied:

they were not 6 of mine. mine burnt out about a month after I got it then I replaced it with an 8800GTS. the other 5 were friends and family that I was helping with computer problems. the one that was replaced was my dads and he was the one that got me the one that burnt because he had a good experience with it. I was not aware of the recent changes of XFX, I just knew they had great support for gamers/modders. one note if you are moving to ATI is that you should be warned of their terrible drivers. they still work, but they cause a lot more issues than NVIDEA drivers do. |

Yeah, this will be my 1st ATI card, ive allways stuck with Nvidia as i know someone who's had nothing but ATI cards and allways bitches about driver issues till about 6mths later when they finaly release a patch to fix it
But the want for a single graphics card that can do 3 monitors, and eves the only game i'll be playing so hopefully it'll be good and not give me issues! |

I have a hd5850 and run eve full quality no problems on 3 monitors, one 22" widescreen and two older 17" TFTs, it is brilliant, especially with eve as all the windows are at the sides leaving the main free.
Eyefinity is great, was very buggy but got a lot better and most games, even old ones work great. it cannot cope with different resolutions so I have a slightly streched centre screen giving 3x 1280x1024.
My monitors are older and only have DVI or VGA, the card I have has one Displayport and 2xDVI, & 1 HDMI, you have to use the displayport for the primary monitor, so if you don't have a new monitor you will need an adapter, funny thing I found was that a DP-DVI adapter has to be active and costs around -ú80, DP-VGA adapter can be passive and is -ú5-10. I got the cheaper one and it works fine.
for extra lulz and computer torture, you can get 3d graphics mods, get a pair of crappy blue and red glasses and enjoy 3d eyefinity, albeit with crap colours.
I was always NVidia all the way but they didnt have anything remotely comparable when I bought my system 18 months or so ago . Don't know anything about NVidis's 3d stuff. ATI drivers have been good, sometimes (very) painful when the card was new but fine now.
The 3rd party rebranding of ATI cards is just superficial, they are all exactly the same card underneath. There are a few exceptions like sapphire vapor x and things, but they look very different. |

any of the higher end saphires with eyefinity should handle it fine. Apple was going to make a smaller version of the iPod touch for kids, until they realized that " iTouch Kids " wouldn't be an appropriate name. |

Any eyefinity-capable ATI card has 3 to 4 plugs in the rear afaik. 2 DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 DP. I think that you need to put the 3rd screen on the DP port or on the HDMI port to make use of it. you can't plug in all 4 at the same time tho.

Sapphire Radeon 6970.
It doesn't do BF3 in 5760x1080 (only gets up to ~20fps at max settings), but otherwise a solid choice for 3 monitors. |

ok, got the 3rd moitor and the only card i could get was the Sapphire 6970
Now im faced with wanting to bash my head against a wall every time i boot up, as it seems i must jump thru hoops, do backflips, balance plates on my nose all while praying to the video game gods that they'll actualy favor me and get it working.
Every startup i seem to "loose" a monitor. It see's it thru detecting it, but wont enable it. many reboots with cord unplugged cord plugged in fiddle with settings reboot before i can get the 3rd screen going again.
This happens regardless if i use an eyefinity profile or just plane window's extend desktop to this monitor feature
help plz?

Make sure multiple monitors are enabled in Windows.
Then go into the video card control panel, Catalyst in your case, and play there to set things up. Life is short and dinner time is chancy Eat desert first! |

Not gona waste time with all these dumb replies.
AMD only can do 3 outputs.
You MUST run one as display port OR get a FLEX card from I forgot who made them.
running 3 screens on one card is going to be a hell of a lot of work with out xfire... if you want to run 3 eves... eh either get a HIGH end cards or be ready to drop the settings from max.
SOOOO
DVI DVI DP YES DVI HDMI DP YES
DVI DVI HDMI NO
DVI DVI (DP > DVI ACTIVE adaptor)... yes. |

You cannot use 2xdvi and 1xhdmi at the same time since one of the dvi outputs shares a channel with the hdmi output.
Your best bet is to use 2xdvi and get an active (!) DP to DVI adapter. You absolutely NEED to use one of the DP outputs to make eyefinity work.
Also, the third monitor won't be recognized untill Windows has booted up, this is normal. During startup you will only see 2 monitors active. |

I'm running 3 monitors on a Saphire HD 5770. Things sometimes get pixilated and my main monitor will sometimes flash in and out for a second but in general it works. 2x DVI and 1 active DP. |

Am using 2x DVI ports and the 3rd connected up with a DP and an active DP -> DVI converter.
During boot it would show 2 monitors, they cloned eachother.
Once it hit the actual login screen all the monitors would go "black" but still lit up, moving the mouse around like they were switched on would make whatever montior the mouse was meant to be in light up slightly more than the other.
Unplugging the DP would "reset" something and one of the DVI monitors would show the actual windows login screen as per normal.
From then on in reconnecting and re-setting up of the 3rd monitor takes 30mins and multiple reboots.
I tried typing my password in as per normal to see if everything would go right after windows had loaded but the 2 screens remained black with the 1 still in powersave mode |

Sounds like you've got a dodgy active DP-DVI converter, Cyp.
I ran this loadout on a 2GB HD5870 for about 6 months with a pair of DVI connections and one active DisplayPort to DVI converter.
Eyefinity is pretty twitchy to be honest, and can be really buggy. It also won't work if you're not using the DisplayPort connector, as eyefinity always uses the monitor connected to this as your primary display.
In the 6 months or so I was running eyefinity I had the same issue you have there several times and had to re-configure display groups repeatedly and sometimes replace drivers to get it to work correctly. The performance was also pretty dire in most games unless you dialled the graphics back.
I'd suggest that if you want to run three displays in any decent way, you're far better of with upgrading your motherboard and looking at a dual card SLI solution. I upgraded to a pair of 3GB Palit GTX580s and they're outstanding. Haven't had a single issue with them since they were installed.
