i head that there is a new combat UI in development, and i was wondering if formation flying was part of it. Eve is a very tactical game and i think adding formation flying to it will increase it's "tacticallity" another level.

ive always enjoyed the idea of formation flying of a sort, but the varying speeds in eve would make this near impossinle - something which could be scripted is different methods of flight - click a button and it goes from "Normal" to "evasive" which lowers your speed, shrinks sig radius, increases your+opponents transversal etc or something - all the while playing a cool jinky animation of your ship =)
anyways, none of this will probly happen, so meh =D

First thing I would want would be to get rid of the concept of up and down. Once we're allowed to fly upside down, then the formation fun can begin =) -where there's an ace, there's a way- |

If you were directly above him, how could you see him?
Because I was inverted. Bull****.
No, he was, man. It was a really great move.

Yes Ma'am. At what range?
About two metres? I have a great Polaroid of it.

obviously you are not going to have battleships forming up on intercetors. you are going to have groups of intys, BSes, maybe some cruisers bunched up in a formation together, and i guess the slowest one would determine the top speed of the formation. heck, now that i think of it you could have faster ships form up on a BS, and then their speed would be capped at the BS'es max speed.
think of fleet engagements that it is now. you have everything in like a soup without much organisation, but what if you could have say 3 intys in an arrow formation fly around picking off tacklers, or tacklers in a sphere formation orbiting around a BS, or a bunch of Ravens in a broad formation sitting out in the back lines shooting off their torpedoes? now wouldn't that be cool?

Formation flying is a good idea, to form up, aim everyone to a designated warp point in prep, and with a push of a single button, have everyone warp in at the same time.
THAT would work, but not in the fight, wherein everyone's gotta keep moving and not stuck together like a set of targets. -

Formations have been removed. They used to be skill based when EVE was young. Each pilot had to have the respective skill.
They didn't work because of lag and latency and high server load.
They were meant to bring a bonus or two to the ships in the formation, but that was never implemented. --*=*=*--

You can have a version of formation flying.
Gather a gang of ships of similar speed and inertia. Gang leader: Right click on your ship, select Pilot, select "gather on"(IIRC that si the correct term used)
When you click that, the rest of the gang forms up on you, if you start orbiting an object or perform any monouver, the gang will follow (or keep their approach on you)
If you activate MWD, make sure the rest of the gang does or they will fall behind.
So, Gang Leader can only do this, Right click on your ship, Select 'Pilot' and sleect gather or form up on.
Hope this helps

Homeworld anyone???
If implemented wise and used accordanly, we might actualy be able to use formation more effectivly then other games have (except from Homeworld of course which did great in that).
Also if balanced right a formation option for gangleader like "Evasive" (adding speed and agility at the cost of for instance shieldpoints or other HP), "Neutral" (what you have currently) or "agressive" (adding HP and a bit of firepower at the cost of reduced speed and agility) would be so freaking nice!!!
I need to play Homeworld again!!! (nice idea during downtime) ----------------------

Even in the same class, different ships can fly at different speeds. Pirate implant sets can make the difference significant enough that either all members should have them, or nobody should.
Keeping formations was the reason pocket battleships/battlecruisers never worked in RL sea warfare. Battleship commanders saw that the BCs had big guns, and therefore should be in the line with the regular battleships. But doing that negates the speed advantage of BCs, and they didn't have the armor to stand toe-to-toe with full battleships. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Mmm, Homeworld was a great game.
I'm sorry but anyone who thinks that formation flying is a waste of time clearly doesn't understand the principles of tactics. There is a reason why the military uses formations. There is a reason why you have your tankers up front and your long range damage dealers at the back.
No matter what engagement type you are in you are always in a formation of some sort of another. The fact that the physicality of your ships in relation to each other and your enemy dictates who gets fired upon first means that this is a HUGE factor in the game. Sig removed. Exceeds size limit of 120x400 pixels and 24000 bytes in size. -Kaemonn |

Formations would have no use in this game other than alligning for warp. Corbis what you say would be true in RL however in this game a formation isnt going to force the enemy to shoot you tankers since they can target whats behind them and shoot right past anything in the way. This really isnt like a medieval game where your warriors line up in front and your archers are put in the back.

I think formations would be a good idea, but theyd have to have some kind of purpose, like, a diamond increases gang HP at the expense of firepower. A line increases damage at the expense of HP, etc. ---------------------------

Actualy this would be a good secondry use for squadron command skill for each level of the skill you could have +1 member in squadron.
Squadrons could be like mini gangs within gangs and once members are assigned to a squad leader there ships would be tied in to his navi comp so wher he jumped they jumed, if he changed formation they would auto fall in.
Also to stop max ship speed conflicts the squadron could only go as fast as the fastest ship in group, Meaning its pointless having af's and inties in one squad, but a squad of inties could draw fire of a squad of af's till they close in.
Gang leadrship skills could also play for formation bonuses, like defence/speed/offence.

Charisma based leadership skills for dozens and dozens of specific formations giving their own special bonus', that'd be sweet.
