I have been successful at getting myself access to Lv 3 missions after about a month of play. My focus to this point has been kill missions and I do not yet have the necessary skills to pilot a Battle Cruiser (I've been working on Advanced Learning skills).
Does anyone suggest switching to Lv 3 courier missions so that I can benefit from higher quality kill missions when I am ready or should I just keep cranking out Lv 2 kill missions which in all honesty are very easy at this point.

L3 couriers might well pay better; I suggest trying a couple-two-three of them, and if they're not as profitable, or too boring, go back to your best L2 combat agent.

Courier missions get boring AND very dangerous. Depending on where you are, if there are any lowsec systems nearby you can bet your but you're gonna be goin through them in a hauler sooner or later. I'd really keep the courier missions for Kali (when they come out with contracts). If you like taking things places, train for a freighter and start moving things for player corps for 1ml per jump I've heard its not a bad thing to do during the week.
EDIT: course, now that I think about it, for some lvl 3 kills are just as dangerous. I've never lost a ship to them but I have buddies that have lost probably 100-200ml in ships and mods to them. When you consider for your courier missions you're flying a 400k ship (badger Mark II) its really not a big deal. UNLESS, you have some local hull conversions or god forbid... Implants.

mmm yeah id recommend it ie shifting to courier and level 1 and 2 cosmos missions.

Cosmos missions? Newbie remember :)
Ultimately, I am not that far away from getting a battle cruiser. Obviously that's different than adequately fitting/running one, so this may be only temporary if I just stop adv learning stuff for a few days....
