Wasn't from getting shot down. It was from mining. I had mined about 1.5m isk worth of omber and put it in a normal cargo container. I was planning to fill it up so it would fill my hauler twice. I was aware from the rookie help channel that cargo containers only lasted for an hour. Well my cargo container was around for at least 1.5 hours so I assumed that as long as I was actively putting stuff in the container, that it wouldn't dissapear. That was a 1.5m ISK mistake.
I know it's not that much in terms of overall EVE. But this was going to be my biggest payoff from mining to date. Two hours down the drain. I know I was foolish and I probably should have not taken chance knowing the fact that the containers didn't last forever, but there really should be a warning for newbies like me. I should get something in the mail saying my container is about to run out in 15 minutes or something. Or at least maybe in the tutorial, stress the fact that these containers have a time limit.
I'm glad that I screwed up NOW instead of later though. I still to this point don't know how long these containers last exactly. Something should be put in the game to prevent newbies from making this mistake, because I could easily see new players quitting over this.

Sorry for your loss, but seriously no warning is needed. 1.5mil isk is a cheap lesson TBH. You'll look back in a few weeks/months and laugh about it.
In the meantime, did you realize you could have just made a new jetcan? Make a new jetcan, drag everything over, bammo fresh timer. Free lesson.
Now get to mining! We need cheaper omber.

yes but that's a good way to repeat the same mistake he made, only this time with even MORE ore to lose...

Cargo containers generally last for *about* 2 hours. At the one hour mark, jet a new can and move contents of the old can to the new one. I've never had a can pop w/o my say-so.

Wow, I never thought of just moving it into another one or renaming it. Oh well, thanks for letting me know. I still think these facts should be more readily known to newbs in game, so they don't have to learn it the hard way. because I honestly wouldn't have had any idea about this if it weren't for the rookie channel or the forums.

Wrong! If you mine into a a normal jetcan, please switch to a new one after 1 hour, so your ore doesnt explode into space.

Somebody (I forget who) claimed in this forum that he had measured jet can duration. He said that a named can lasts 90 min.

When renaming the can, include the time that it was jettisoned. Acts as a good reminder.
