I'm a noob.
I started playing this game back in 2005. played it for three years, then took a break till last week...
The game is just too complex for me, there is so many things that annoy me, like going out on a mission forgetting to put item from hangar to ship and stuff like that...
YET, EvE had and still has so many charm that I never, ever said one bad word against this game. I'm glad it's still alive and kicking.
I like other space sims too, currently I'm playing Starpoint Gemini 2 and if you can, give it a try because it's worth the money. That game is different then EvE. More dynamic and single player, but still when I need to compare it to anything, I say it's EvE Offline, mainly for it's tactical combat and RPG system.
I also think that Elite Dangerous has its potential as first person space shooter... Not to mention Star Citizen.
But EvE somehow always managed to stay in my heart. Even during the years that I didn't play it, I often talked weith people about it, recommended it to many people and itching to get back.
And now I'm where I started. New character, new ship, new level of noobiness... At least I glad that the community stayed kind and helpful as always. Thank you for that. :) |

Curious... are you the same person who posted something similar to this on steam?
Regarless, welcome back and enjoy getting into the game once more. A lot has changed since you last played so there's loads to catch up on and have fun with. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like here in New Citizens forum, we're a friendly bunch and help where we can.

I know a lot has changed. And I'm catching up slowly, found me a nice corp, getting to know the game again. :) Thank you for the help, I know you're a friendly bunch.
I never had any problems with EvE players. I did end up in my escape pod once, but that's another story. :D
And to answer your question, yes. I did comment on Steam. I just didn't buy the game over Steam but directly here on EvE's web. :) |

EVE is very special. I have yet to play another video game quite like it. I first played EVE sometime in 2008 or 09 I believe, and approached it in a, frankly, suboptimal way. I played almost entirely solo for most of my time, running missions and pining for that "next awesome ship". I played that way for months, I was extremely shy at the time so I kept to myself, quietly grinding away and ship spinning while waiting for the next ship to fly. I was terribly bored.
So, one day I took my newest shiny toy I had no business flying, a poorly fit Harbinger with, if memory serves, 0 capacitor skills trained into some lowsec system near where I "lived". It barely lasted 3 minutes. 2 of those minutes were me being gunned down by another Battlecruiser. The whole time, my heart was pounding as though I was in the middle of a real fist fight. I was shaking and feeling real panic. BOOM.
My ship exploded and my pod was scrammed. I was in shock. I mean literal shock. I didn't know how to react. I was feeling polar opposite emotions all at the same time, anger, elation, sadness and happiness and everything in between. It felt like forever, but it was only a few seconds later that the gentleman who had relieved me of my shiny toy typed into local: "Hey bro! Good fight!"
I stared at the screen, and my left eyebrow raised as it always does when I'm confused.
"I can tell by your character age and how that fight went that you're new to low sec and PvP, do you want some advice?"
Few more seconds went by and I tentatively said: "Yes".
He ended up escorting me to a station in the system and spending a good hour talking to me, dumping mountains of information on me. Fitting advice, fly frigates first, D-Scan, bookmarks, pirates, can flipping, Rifters, bla bla bla, bla bla blabla. Total information overload. We finished talking, I logged out and was still kind of stunned by the whole thing.
The next time I logged on, I fit up a Rifter the way he had told me to, and started trying to can flip miners. After that I decided to try joining a corporation to make some space buddies to do space crime together. There were I believe three of us most of the time, none of us really knowing what we were doing, the most "experienced" pilot used a Covert Ops to look for targets for us, and us two morons (affectionately named so) would charge in and pray our combined might would kill stuff. It usually didn't. But we had a good time, and I wasn't bored anymore.
This pattern lasted for a couple weeks. Then, the corp imploded due to some stupid drama among the leaders. No matter, I would find another corp and continue. Unfortunately at that point, many things happened all at once in my personal life, and I made the decision to stop playing EVE and focus on the issues at hand. I kept telling myself I would come back to EVE and slowly but surely forgot about it over the years.
Fast forward to 2 months ago:
I'M BACK B***ES!
Honestly, my biggest regret in not being able to remember any of my old account info, is that I can't get in touch with the dude who blew up my Harbinger and say thank you. The little amount of effort he put in that day, saved the game for me. It also opened my eyes to what kind of game eve was, a sandbox. I wasn't aware of the term at the time, but I "got" it. I think that's one of the biggest hurdles for a new player to EVE, understanding that this isn't like every other game out there. I came for the the spaceships, and ended up coming back for the sand.
Sorry for the novel, once I started I kind of got carried away. I REALLY like this game is the main point.
TL;DR: EVE is a special snowflake in the gaming world, and I mean that quite literally.

Ok you gave me litteral goosebumps.
Because my story was similar to yours, when I played long ago (I was solo, flying around, doing missions) but the guy who killed me instead of giving me advice, he left.
So your story is more positive and I'm glad about it.
Thank you for your support and for sharing the story. :) |

Well that depends where you look IMO.
In my 4+ years in EVE I think a vast majority of the people I've gotten to know are very friendly and helpful (okay, it DOES depend on the attitude of the opposite person in question).
So yes, if you look through that very small crust of Aholes, Dbags and trolls, EVE has a great community. Issue is that the first mentioned 3 categories are voicing their opinions a lot more. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Well in any game there are childish players or people that were not breastfed when they were little so they think that MMOs are a place to gain selfesteem through harassing weaker players.
But I really didn't have that many problems in EvE... On the contrary...
Well I played many MMO's so I've met literally hundreds of people. World of Warcraft, The Lord of the Rings Online, EvE Online, Rift, Star Wars The Old Republic, Everquest 2, Neverwinter, D&D Online, Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, tried The Elder Scrolls Online. Probably forgot some.
Believe me, EvE has the best MMO community I've seen so far. At least that's my experience. Must be that this genre or complexity of the game doesn't compel the half ******** kids. :D I don't know, but I'm glad for it. :) |

Great story from Azda Ja!
The people answering us in the New Citizens Q&A forum are very friendly! Now for the EVE universe itself, my answer would be different. But somehow the fatal attraction in EVE lies in that the same person that will ruthlessly kill you in low-sec might also be a very friendly and nice guy once you talk to him.
I just hope that most of you (us?) are like that, and not d-bag and trolls. Now I know also that some rejoice in 'Tears', i.e hearing the frustration and anger of people losing stuff, if I get things right. Now who is the man with the wrong attitude? The guy enjoying 'tears' or the guy being angered from losing stuff in what should be a game and a hobby? I don't know and I'm still undecided about that. Though I'm sure EVE has its lot of psychopaths...
Remember though something, if you look into the abyss, the abyss will look back at you (that's a quote from Mister N. ). So I do know that if you think that the end always justify the mean, you are also losing yourself.
tl;dr : welcome back! I have too an old account and yet I'm totally newb to the game. |

A GF or o7 in local always goes a long way, especially if you PM your killer(s) and ask them for advice or how they managed to pull their kill off. The difference between a carebear and a bear is that one expects the world to revolve around them, the other accepts the world for what it is and works around it.

I have too an old account and yet I'm totally newb to the game. while I don't actively go looking for tears, I will gladly take them from the type of player for who will start spitting vitriol because i blew up their internet spacepixel ship, I'll go to town on them and share the glorious nourishment of it with my Corp mates and gloat over it for days.
However should they take it well I'll go far out of my way to offer help , I have sat for hours talking to newbies(after shooting them in the face, obviously) , sharing information about the various resources on offer to help them, iv replaced ships, given isk, shared fits and even recruited one because they had a good attitude and were willing to be social (and importantly were not belligerent arseholes ).
For the most part I have found the vets to be like this as well.
Also, words of warning : this sub forum is explicitly troll free , the rest of the forums have been effectively weponised (I'm looking at you General Discussion) so read for a while before you start posting, it is exactly the same as in game though, if you're belligerent and/or whining you will get schooled in trolling and creative putdowns , be cool about it and for the most part people will respond in kind (As we can't shoot you in the face on the forums)
