We've got a funky new scanner arriving in Kali... why not use it?
First up, all bookmarks are deleted! Only anchorable objects can be bookmarked e.g anchored cans (BM deleted when can is unanchored/destroyed). This system would have to run in parallel to existing bookmarks for a while to allow people with cans etc BMed a chance to change the old bookmarks to new style.
Safespots
Allow players to pick any point in a system to warp to using the scanner.
Gangleaders should be able to temporarily mark points in a system (a bit like a commander in planetside can set waypoints) for people to warp to so that fleets that have split into parts can still easily meet at a predefined location.
The gangleader can only have x number (maybe leadership skill dependant) active at a time and they are deleted from the server when the gang is split up. This removes the need for safe spot bookmarks.
Gates
Autopilot continues to work as it is (15km out). Using the warp to option on a gate will put you dead on it. Players wishing to stop people having easy passage through a gate can (maybe using hacking skill) interfere with the gate to make people land further out. This will require the hacker to be within a certain range of the gate so as to limit snipers.
To put it into RP terms, the hacker is modulating the signiture of the gate, throwing approching ships navigation off a little. Distance could be dependant on the approaching ships sensor strength so a BS will land closer than an inty, although obviously the inty will find it easier to close the gap.
This means that travel times are just as fast as with instas when theres no hostiles about but hostiles have the ability to prevent the insta effect.

Not even one reply? Either the lack of flames means it's such a great idea no-one can think of any problems or it sucks so hard no-one could be bothered to point out the flaws...

It's one possible answer (and not really a new one), sure Skawl. And it dosn't break everything. (Well, mission BM's but that's handleable via the same system they'll be using for escalating encounters)
But popular? Um..no, not really either.

I'd not seen the 'warp anywhere with the scanner' idea before although the interfering with gates idea has come up a few times.
I doubt any idea will be popular - the current insta issue isn't popular, nor is the idea of not being able to warp straight to a gate. The trick is to come up with something that most people can agree doesn't break the game either for the pirates, industialists, carebears or 0.0 alliances.
This just about fits the bill.
