Hello everyone!
I've recently come back to EVE. While I'm brushing off the dust and getting reacquainted with the game , I've become confused about the general paradigm surrounding Salvaging techniques.
I've done some research to educate myself, but it is precisely this research that has confused me.
The most basic, open ended question is "what's the best ship for salvaging?", but this is not really a concern of mine. I have a Noctis already. I'm more concerned with the process and logistics of a salvage run with regards to what ship you're using.
I'm confused because it seems to me that common salvaging practices involve two different skill sets that can only be carried out by two different ships. > One ship fitted with Cloak & Probe Launcher to scan down mission runners > One ship fitted with Salvagers & Tractors to do the actual work.
My goal isn't to complain, but admittedly I am growing tired of jumping a few times to run a mission, bookmarking a wreck, jumping back to the station to turn in the mission, grab my other ship....jump back to the wreck, salvage, then jump back to the station. The Agent could send me anywhere. The site could be 2 jumps away, it could be 5 jumps away, and I have to juggle 2 ships in the process. One to run the mission, one to come back and salvage.
Besides running missions and salvaging wrecks made by me, I do enjoy scanning down other ships running missions. But even with that scenario, I need a scanning ship and another salvaging ship.
Looking at the star map, I filter it to see Number of wrecks in the last 24 hours. I always go for the higher, red systems of course. Say there's a system that's 4 jumps away that has a high number of ships destroyed. So I jump 4 times with my scanning ship, take a while to find the site, jump back 4 times to the station, grab my other salvaging ship, take that 4 jumps to the bookmarked wreck, then come back 4 jumps to the station to sell.
This cannot be how everyone does it, right?
1 - Does anyone fit a Noctis with a Cloak and Probe Launcher? 2 - Do destroyers have enough CPU & Power to handle a couple salvagers, Cloak, & Probe Launcher? 3 - Do you really utilize two different ships for the salvaging process? 4 - Finally, is there a ship that can handle a Cloak, Probe Launcher, Salvagers, and "decent" cargo capacity? An "all around, jack of all trades" kind of ship?
This going back and forth and juggling two different ships is really cutting into my enjoyment & time.
Take care, Kye

1) Not sure. Wouldn't be too hard to do I imagine 2) Yes. A lot of new salvagers use destoyers in the beginning. 3) I did, but was using two different characters/accounts 4) Could look at T1 exploration frigates. I believe they still have the salvager cycle bonus as well as probe bonus.
You could also look at working with mission runners. Some people don't actually salvage after a mission and leave it. Work with them to get bookmarks, go salvage and split the profit. My twitch stream to help new players: http://www.twitch.tv/biohazrd51

I use a thrasher to salvage. I can't bring myself to justify the price of a noctis in case I get ganked (compared to the price of a thrasher, at least). Bring a mobile depot and refit from 'scanning/exploring' to 'salvaging' in the field.
Just keep your salvagers in your cargo hold, drop your mobile depot in a safe spot after you are done scanning, refit using the depot and go salvage. I never actually leave a mobile depot up, since people can scan them down. Scoop the depot after you are done changing fits in the field. |

I just use a battleship to do the missions. I drop a mobile tractor unit to round up the wrecks and then use salvage drones for salvaging. There are probably more efficient ways to do it, but it works for me. |

I use an assault frigate
the general practice is:
- scan down site with an alt - warp to site - loot wrecks - tank the first volly from the enraged carebear you just stole from - shoot said enraged carebear in the face - "salvage" what's worth taking from the wreck (dont forget the corpse) - leave the garbage for someone els =]I[= |

I agree with the above poster, you should invest in an alt and enter the magic world of multi-boxing. |

Who needs salvaging alts/orcas when you have a trusty Ishkur? GÇ£Some capsuleers claim that ECM is 'dishonorable' and 'unfair'. Jam those ones first, and kill them last.GÇ¥ - Jirai 'Fatal' Laitanen, Pithum Nullifier Training Manual c. YC104 |

Maybe I've been out of the salvaging game for too long, but what is the cloak for? Are you salvaging in low/null? If you're salvaging in hostile territory, then I wouldn't think you'd sit in one place long enough to fill a noctis.
No reason to cloak (for this type of work) in high sec, that I can think of.
As above, I used to take a BS if I'm multi-tasking...salvage and shooting...Had a 'geddon I called "Indiana Jones."
Sneaky salvaging was an Anathema.
High sec salvage was a Corm, then a Noctis when they came out. That was in the mission-running days.
And yes, I did the two-ship thing like you described. A little annoying, but meh...first-world problems. Plenty of time and what else ya gonna do? Mine?

Hello,
The situation should basically let you know how to proceed.
For high level sites that contain a lot of wrecks, especially large wrecks, then the Noctis is still the prime ship for looting and salvaging wrecks.
Next option would be Mobile Tractor Unit and Salvage Drones. However there might be a problem with limited Cargohold space on your ship if you plan to loot everything.
If you plan on only taking top equipment, a set of Salvage Drones in your combat ship will pretty much complete salvaging all the wrecks by the time you're done 'Cherry Picking' through all the loot.
Lastly a Destroyer fit with Probe Launcher and Salvager is definitely a go-to fit for Ninja Salvaging.
Anyway, welcome back to Eve and good luck to you.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.
yes, the cloak, in my mind, would be appropriate for low-sec or null-sec. I've yet to venture out to null sec, and admittedly, I'm afraid!!! hahaha
Figured I might find some player shipwrecks out there, but a cloak would help.

People stopped ninja-salvaging other people's missions almost two years ago. I guess you have been gone for a while.

If running missions is your thing you could look into the Marauder line of BS'.
tractor/salvage while you blow stuff up, large cargo holds, nearly impossible to screw up, cheap t2 fits. By far and away the best casual way to run missions.

1. Pick up the mission 2. Carry out the mission 3. Drop off mission ship and pick up noctis 4. Return to mission to clean it up 5. Return to agent then turn in the mission
To help with efficiency, bring MTUs with your mission ship and deploy them in the missions. Pack your noctis with 8 salvagers and when you warp into the mission to clean up, all the wrecks will be nicely packed together. |

MTU + Salvage drones to salvage wrecks as you make them. Then when you're done making wrecks use a mobile depot to refit for cargo expanders to haul all of the loot. |
