When you are out in a belt in a system with other friendly pilots around, and a hostile pilot or NPC attacks you, often times you furiously try to find the belt name and type it on local. It would be nice if you could just fire off a distress beacon as follows:
1) distress beacon requires no special skills or modules fitted, it's just a button right next to the 'A' for autopilot button.
2) in-space message to all pilots in system "<pilot> has activated a distress beacon"
3) the distress beacon appears in the overview of all pilots in that system, just like a cyno field, but it is named for the pilot.
4) anyone in system can warp to the distress beacon, friendly or not

I think that's a pretty dang cool idea, actually. What negative impact might it have on server performance?

This would be great, as it would also attract pirates like blood in the water to sharks.
Would make it a very interesting tradeoff.

I like it. Very cool idea. Should be simple enough to implement as well. The beacon could be treated like any other object in the game, like a jetcan, only every body in the system can see it.

to stop it being abused it'll need a cooldown timer, such as one beacon every 5mins, that way if you need to fire it again within those 5 mins then it's yourfault :p

be nice if you could open a wormhole maybe with a radious of say 5 jumps so your m8's could come help you would be fun to use in more offensive engagments too. Nice idea

Everquest2 has a similar system and it works really well. You have a 'Help' button that works just like you mentioned. It's pretty funny to see someone come running past a group with a hundred angry monsters chasing them, flashing 'HELP HELP' in the chat window.
