As a sequel of sorts to my old thread "roleplaying pet peeves," for kicks I'd like to start up a discussion of forum quirks that really cheese you off.
Naturally, to get the ball rolling, I will present you mine!
"Get over it." Undisputably, the most asinine and common of my pet peeves. When in the history of the Internet has anyone taken a "get over it" statement as anything other than "Hi, I'm a big moron and I am contributing nothing to the discussion other than I enjoy having things EXACTLY the way they are and if I were king of the world I would squash all your opinions."
"That's your opinion." Well, no crap it is!
"I'm entitled to my opinion!" Often, the guy who says "that's your opinion" will also say this little nugget of crap. Of course you have your opinion, but that doesn't make it sensible or right without some justification.
"Don't let the door hit you..." It was funny about 10 years ago.
"Can I have your stuff?" It's become a meme of a meme... actually, I'm starting to like this one again.
"I like to talk... with a lot of ellipses... because it makes me sound... pretentious like a metrosexual elf roleplayer on WoW... or maybe like William Shatner..."
"I am also Pretentious but what I like to do is find random Words in my Sentences and capitalize Them, especially words with a lot of Weight, such as Truth. Often I am your friendly neighborhood religion-politics Troll and often I end my statements with an ellipses to show You what a Dip I am..."

Aaaaaaand to top it off: People who declare they work for the game company/have a degree/have a REAL LIFE FEMALE PERSON that they kiss and sometimes have sex with. The above-declared quality makes them qualified to speak with authority and makes them immune to criticism.

Ooh, ooh! Let me add mine!
"It's just a game" usually topped off with a smiley or a "lol." Usually used by some griefer twit who gets his giggles by making everyone else as miserable as possible in the game. Usually, they are quasi-nihilists who like to proclaim that nothing matters... except their little corner of the game, of course.

People that insist that a game mechanic is flawed, and instead of taking the advice of a few dozen threads on the same topic giving them advice on how to overcome it, decide to whine about it and make a rabble about how it should be changed.
People that won't change their mind, but cannot defend their position when called on it.
People that throw out an opposing side's arguments because they are "inherently flawed", otherwise known as the "I'm right regardless of what points you bring" way of thinking.

Sorry for spamming, but I thought of another one that bears mentioning.
This one applies to games with an over-used and overabused weapon, skill, character class, or other mechanic that truly imbalances a game.
"If you don't like X, get yourself X."
Example:
"If you don't like jedi, grind yourself a jedi." Usually topped off with a "get over it" for additional jerk-factor.
What this means is the only counter to X is more of X. Which is inherently stupid. That's like rock being beaten with "bigger rock" in rock-paper-scissors. This kind of imbalance is great for the ones who take advantage of it, so in the forums, they'll flame the hell out of you for bringing it up.
It applies to EVE as well, especially for electronic warfare. Where the only defense against EW is... MORE EW!

I agree with the whole OP apart from the "can I have your stuff?" one. That one is tradional, and should be posted wherever appropriate.
The ellipsis one is true as well, even though I do it myself

ECM really does suck though. Some things are whined about because the whiner is a moron. Some things are really broken.

Hi, welcome to the little place I call the internet.

"inherently flawed" is a perfectly valid description, if it is used in the context of "inherently flawed as long as" or "and is thus inherently flawed" or "inherently flawed because". Unjustified though, it sucks severe arse.

I use the ellipses a lot, but its just habit... Usually I still have more thoughts on the subject or something, and just cant say it. Plus I like the Shatner effect. _______________________________________________ I am the devil, and I'm here to do the devils work.

I hate when promising threads lay buried and people read them without responding. When I check back a day later, there's two replies... yet it's on page two. And a lot of stupid crap is on page one to replace it!

Don't the REAL Programmers get upset by that? Oh, by the way, I INVENTED computers, yeah, because i'm awesome. Anyway... i've forgotten what i'm talking about.

Edited by: Jacxx on 06/08/2006 20:31:52 People who say "QFT" seriously, it stopped being clever or funny after the first month people used it. What makes it even better is when people type that, but didn't even quote anybody to go along with it. What ever happened to just saying "I concur" or something like that.
And my most favorite of all: Threads that are labeled "Look at this!" or "SO FUNNY" or any other non-descriptive topic title. Then all there is in the body of the post is a link to some Youtube video. And very rarely there is another "LOL" after the link. Every reply to the thread then is something like "ROFL", "WTF", "SO FUNNY", or possibly another Youtube link. What ever happened to actual content to a video related thread? Man.
Edit: Above applys to: Googlevideo, Spikehumor, Funnyjunk, etc etc
Please STOP comparing EvE to WoW, they are polar opposites, and are made for completely diffrent audiences. Seriously. |
