Hi, all.
I'd like to cheerfully report that I lost my first ship to PVP today, a nicely kitted Tristan I was using to hunt 'rats in .4 space. So I'd warped into a belt and determined it to be empty of pirates. Shortly thereafter, a couple of players warped in... DominusMiles and ChrisCole.
Except that, because their corps is named Galactic Manufacturing, their corp ticker is "GM"... and consequently their mouseovers read "DominusMiles [GM]" and "ChrisCole [GM]," respectively. They were both in cruisers.
Which was all well and good. As they moved closer, they chatted me up in Local, asked how the gameplay was going, and did I need any help with anything?
Sure enough, I *did* need help with something... getting away, as I found myself warpjammed and under attack from drones and guns. My Tristan lasted about a minute. To their credit, they didn't pod me.
No sweat off my back... the Tristan was insured, after all... but this notice is fair warning to all. Watch out for the [GM] ticker symbol, in and around Gallente space.

Do you think their local talk was an attempt to make you think they were GM's?

Yes, I think that's exactly it.
It was pretty foolish on their part, too. I could have paid a lot more ransom than they made off the salvage of my ship.

Thanks.
In retrospect, my post about this displays my noobishness. If I'd ever been in game with a GM, I assume they would show up differently...?

GM text is usually in a different colour and, "GM" appears before their character name rather than as a Ticker.

I would call this an attempt to impersonate a GM, highly bannable. But .... they can claim it just came out that way.
Another way for experienced "players" to kill new players.

GM's show up as red text in channels. I'm not sure if this is info is displayed anywhere for new players to see though.

Possibly an attempt. Also it may be merely a poor coincedence. Did you check to see if you saved your chat log? Would be interesting to see the local convo of the event.

As Josh mentioned, for legitimate game masters, "GM" appears at the beginning of their names (ie GM Wyrm, etc.) but new players wouldn't know this. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This is definately a situation that needs to be corrected immediately.

Thanks, Pann. I appreciate it.
To others who have commented: Yes, I did petition in-game. No, I did not save a chat transcript. It looks like it will be dealt with to my satisfaction.

Ok. I am not a pirate or anything and never have been. Also, I can understand anyone getting attacked by them to be upset and post on these forums to reveal the pirate tactics. I even applaud that. I would do the same.
But why are the REST of you folks so upset with this tactic? You whine about camping and that pirates should be using their brains to capture victims, not lag exploits, etc. Well that is exactly what these two pirates did and yet still you whine.
Consider: historically RL pirates have always used deception to get close to their prey. Flying friendly colors before suddenly hoisting the Jolly Rogers was a common tactic in fact. Heck even carnivorous animals (snakes, lizards, lions, etc) use deception/disguise to get close to their prey. They would starve to death if they did not.
There seems to be a notion on these forums that pirates are supposed to win because they are better fighters. Implict in that notion is that pirates should be fighting in the open. This is historical nonsense. RL pirates were not "natural born killers". You've seen too much TV if you think so. They were greedy thieving opportunists using any sneaky technique to trap unwary victims in regions were law enforcement was largely absent. They typically were not that strong either. They used trickery and stealth to trap their prey.
So isn't that exactly what these two did? And didn't their prey have every chance to use his brain and figure things out before it got too late? He didn't figure it out. I probably wouldn't have either. But that doesn't make the disguise unfair. Finally, they didn't even pod the fellow. I mean, how well behaved do you all expect Eve pirates to be?

Isn't against the EULA to misrepresent yourself as an employee of CCP? I don't know the exact wording, but I would imagine that leading someone to believe you're a GM is not fair play, as GM's are not players. If it were just the ticker symbol I wouldn't expect it to be too much of a problem, but to act as if you were a employee (non-player) is suspect indeed. This would be akin to pretending to be someone from the AOL billing dept to get people to give up their credit card info. (extreme comparion, but the principal is the same)

If anyone thinks I object to losing my ship, let me set the record straight: I was in a frigate in Sharuveil, in .4 space, and therefore fair game. I don't mind losing my ship... you pays your money and you takes your chances. I learned a good lesson that day.
Besides, the ship was insured. I've noted the guys' names, and when I have my cruiser I'll go out gunning for them.
It was only the matter of the GM ticker to which I objected. And I'm pleased to report that as of today, they're showing up as GMA. So all is well in my little corner of the virtual galaxy.

okay, lemme set this straight... I didn't impersonate or claimed to a GM, or any member of the CCP crew. He just assumed, neither did he question me or my pal about our [GM] ticket. We changed the corp name to GMA because other people also assume before they think.
Sooooo, thats my opinion on the whole matter, and seeming as I was there, take my word for it.

Galactic Manufacturing?
Those guys have been a corp since like Beta. They're small, and they've always had the ticker GM.
I think they were trying to go for the "GM" in RL, i.e. General Motors.
I've done business with them in the past, and they seemed like good guys. I doubt they were trying to use this as an exploit. |

one more thing, if people are angry about anything me and Dominus did, seek us out and not our corpies. We were at all not acting on behalf of the corp or in the interests of Galactic Manufacturing. Nor does our actions make GM a bad corp or untrustworthy in any way. I take full responsability for this, deal your business with me if you have any, but not on Galactic Manufacturing.

Chris it may already be too late, people now know that Galactic Manufacturing harbours known player killers and therefore by default condones their actions, in a lot of peoples eyes that makes your whole corp fair game.

Ok, my attention has been brought to this topic. So now I guess I get to throw out my 2 isk.
Quote: Ryes Ammal Finally, they didn't even pod the fellow. I mean, how well behaved do you all expect Eve pirates to be?
This was their first PvP experience actually, they weren't out for rampant death they just wanted to blow something up, infact until I was made aware of this topic I had assumed they attacked each other. And for the record, our corp ticker was GM long before the devs thought it would be a great idea to plaster it all over everything.
Quote: Abandoned Child I think they were trying to go for the "GM" in RL, i.e. General Motors.
Actually yes we were, and I have put in a petition to have it changed to GMC. Never going to happen, but it's worth a shot....
Quote: Abandoned Child I've done business with them in the past, and they seemed like good guys.
I try to keep the corp as peaceful and honest as possible. Now that I know they attacked another player for no apparent reason, I'll have to think of a fitting punishment for them.
Sometimes I miss the days when we just had 5 members, it was so much easier to keep everyone in line. ---------------------------------------------

You have to accept though that you represent your corporation through your actions.
And there attacking other players will affect both yours and your corps reputation.
