I'd start with the ship setup index stickied in this forum.
Following that, the common theme for advice regarding the catalyst (and destroyers in general) is that they should be skipped over until you have more of the supporting skills trained in order to fly them properly. Cruisers are recommended. The most glaring reason for this is because the destroyers sort of merge the worst of the frigate and cruiser world together into one class in favor of a crap load of guns. Slower speed, larger signature radius combined with little more than frigate hit points makes for pretty horrible survivability.
That out of the way, my favorite catalyst setup below:
hi: 6x 125mm (iron & plutonium) mid: 1mn ab; micro cap booster (100's) low: 200mm rolled tungsten, damage control unit, small armor repair unit
iron charges for 33km sniping, plutonium for 15km and closer. pops most frigates relatively quickly at any range. can ghetto tank under reasonable conditions with near cruiser armor (i think i had 1071 armor) and 10% resists and the cap booster keeping the armor rep fed.

Yep. Get rid of it and fly a frig until you can afford to fly a cruiser properly. Because I said so...

Edited by: Clais Monaige on 06/08/2006 16:27:42 As newbie it's relativly hard to fly especially the catalyst. Afaik it has the best DPS fitted with blasters, so i'd go for 8x ions, mwd/ab and tracking/damage mods (in pvp), perhaps one damage control in lows.
But for the beginning i'd go for the other race's frigates since they use all the same destroyer skill and don't gain a bonus from the frigate skills (so it doesn't matter how high they are when reaching lvl 3 or so). For Ratting i'd go for Coercer (most tanking ability i think), Cormorant for solo pvp (ecm, sniping) or Thrasher for fleet / gang pvp (tackling, high alpha damage).
But if you plan to pve in a Catalyst - try as many 125er railguns as possible plus 1x AB in med slots plus 1x small repper, 1x400/200er plating, 1x energized plate or damage control (or maybe these energized gimme-15%-to-all-armor-resistances). _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -
