There is a method to saving visual data of spaceships. It is very interesting and worth explaining, especially since that method is changed and improved. To introduce The Space Object Factory and what it means down the road, CCP Mankiller (eep) has written a dev blog.
You should read it!
It got a bit technical but it was worth it! What do you guys think?

Does this mean there will be an end for all the hundreds of files,
and instead you will consolidate everything into a single one?
Because that would be much more friendly to harddrives and SDDs....

all you need now is to be able to store metadata for ship hulls and we can have more ship skins beside other neat things like ship producer attributes etc.

As he mentioned this sound like a wonderful Idea for optimizing. Granted he said no crazy combos, but it really opens the game up for that later. They could eventually get it to a point where players can completely customize there hulls and modifiers from the ground up while building them, based on which combination of items they use during the production of the hull. This can pretty much get rid of players having to pick a specific ship based on the modifiers and opens up a completely more awesome realm of possibilities. |
