Gang is nice and neat but when it comes to large gangs aka fleets it becomes very difficult to manage simple things like inviting pilots while giving directions and stuff. Already when you crash there is a certain chance that you remain in gang which helps a bit but can add to the confusion.
My idea at it's base is pretty simple, the gang leader is able to delegate role to his gangmembers, namely to invite other people. From here on you could go further in organising a gang with subgroups. Flettcommander and subcommanders could have a colour code in gang chat. This would make fleet engagements far more organised and effective.
While the advantages of such features for fleets are obvious, smaller gangs like roaming packs, mining groups and ratting gangs would profit from it all just as much.
And to add some more candy to gangs, it would be really great if the leader (or commanders) could "point" the entire gang to something hostile in the overview. Enhanced target calling in fleets and save my rear when faceing npc rats. --------------- When I was young I wanted to be me, my childhood dream came true |

Hostile or not - choosing any object in space and making it show up on gangmates overview with bold and blinking commander created description, wuld be nice. Descriptions shuld be savable, so commander normally chooses from list and sometimes adds something there. Example list like;
primary secondary primary for support align align, JOA warp warp at optimal warp at sniper-100 SS SS at POS
and so on and so on. Multiple points marked wuld be basically dynamically created bookmarks with fature of being visible on overview and ability to be asigned to non static objects (like ships). Just a rightclick button of "mark as target".
Asigning sub commanders to this wuld help much :) --- Bookmark improvements Player owned brokers |

This is called "Target Tagging" and is available to the gang leader. You are limited to a letter or number and you need to have the tag up in your overview but it can make a big difference if used effectively.

Lieutenant support in gangs has always been needed. As is, you have to have the same person that drives do the inviting, while the informal gang leader simply gives orders.
I think it would also be nice if the combat overview had numbers on the compass. Or at least colors. Being able to plant a big blur on the compass would be awesome.
Other lieutenancy roles I could think of could be assigning target substatus.
Better yet, if we could get different warp formations than the usual bubble, it would be nice to have a couple preset classes or positions. You could tag all the cepters to the ends, or sort people based on range setups, or just push the BS to the outer ring/slots so they don't all bounce off of one another at the end. By going with a few simple classes you can add a simple positioning behavior to warps. For all I know, gang formation may be completely accidental.
Lieutenancies will be even more important if we ever have subgangs with independent group warp capability, or separate subgang chatter.

A whole chain of command--where gang members could be "promoted" to have powers like gang warp or invitation or target tagging--would solve most of these problems. Let the CovOps scout tag the targets, have a dedicated chat watcher in safe space inviting people, and have a navigator with all the bookmarks handle gang warps. The idea of Gang Leader as a uniquely powerful position is not compatible with the way gangs--even small gang--are used in EvE.
