Edited by: Avery Longname on 09/10/2003 07:07:46 Ok, I don't want to rant and rave. I'm a gamer first. I have no life. (pretty much). I consider myself to be a casual gamer. When I sit down to play a game, it's because I want to take myself down a notch and jump into some fantasy. It's my -*****-. My drug of choice. Some people have other drugs. Some people read books. Some do art. Some build models. Etc. What does this have to do with the game you ask? Well being that when I'm a part of the world, it would be nice to see some in game animations. I've started noticing a trend for MMORPGs and that is that there is no animations. Animations are the central feature to any fantasy. For example, an animation which starts the game. Something which explains the timeline for your chosen race. Then there could be destruction animations when you blow up pirates or other players. Or their could be a docking animation that shows your character temporarily interacting with others in the same station. Or an animation which shows minerals being loaded onto a conveyor belt when you sell them. Or an animation which shows your character entering the bridge of the ship and taking his/her command seat. There are hundreds of little animations you could do from time to time which would really help connect us the player to the game better. Perhaps even a monthly animation which explains the storyline a little better. The POTW's are nice, but how do you tie them back to the game?
You could have shown an animation when the amarrian emperor died. All you have to do is create a story board. Render a few objects, upload them from time to time to the client, and then let the client deside if they want to see the animations or not. Trust me on this. You'll have player flocking to your ranks when they see or hear about your lavish animations.
Even in movies you're not always watching the characters in the story. From time to time the directors like to either insert an animation to explain the story better, or they will pan around to show you more about the character's world that they live in. It puts the audience more in touch with the material they are watching. Something to think about.

I can but agree with you, ever since i started playing EVE i've been missing those animations.
Small things, like your ship docking to a station and when launching again.
Or in other words: Yeah, what he said
"Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire." "Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you." "The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle."

Awesome! So next time I'm reloading my ship for combat, as quickly as possible as my corp. mates are getting attacked, I'll get hung up watching my character take a sh!t in the station!
I agree, everything should take a lot longer, and I should be forced to watch the same animations over and over and over while trying to get things done in a timely manner.

Although I do agree with u to an extent i'm sure if this ever did make it in the game (99% chance it won't) you would most likely be able to skip the animations or have a feature to turn them off.

Why not replace the "loading" bars that appear when you do something with animations?
If the animation is placed client side they could be loaded and played while the client is waiting for the server to respond to the players actions.
Add an option like "play full animations on/off" so if the server is quick to respond and I have seen the animation for n:th time I get into space quick... or something like that.
Problem is that CPP would somehow have to push these animations out to the clients. This could be solved if they just add the option to play animations and the actual animations were downloadable from another site, i.e. not pushed out the normal patch way. That way the player can download the animations as they wish.

I like this idea a lot and I think that people aren't giving it enough credit when they automatically assume CCP won't do it. Afterall they are a business and increasing sales would mean money... i.e. increased profit.
I agree that animations help people connect to the fantasy world a lot better than without. Even the small things like docking (as someone already said). You can even change it up too so that you don't see just the same image.
As far as it being a hindrence, it is simple. Allow for a simple escape feature like hitting the space bar cuts the animation. Plus the classic option of turning the animations off.
just adding my two cents. ah, Fujiko... |

Animations = more system resources used.
It might be a good idea to take care of the mem. leak before anything like this is put into the consideration pile.

If you can turn them off great.
I want more flashy things like docking and undocking mini movies but the option to turn them off needs to be avalible for pleople without highend systems.

Cool idea .. specially: - Replacing the loading bar - Enabling the animations to be turned off
And i'd add: Make the loading bar animations random, so you see different ones | Join eve-webring.com to promote your site. |
