So I've been getting Socket Closed messages for a long time now and after raising a ticket with the GMs they explained that it's an ISP issue, after reading around on here and other forums it kinda makes sense.
What causes it; Well from what I understand it's caused by the low tolerance CCP has evoked for packet loss on the server. Fair enough seeing as there's so many thousand of people using it and lag would be bad for individuals, it's not like an FPS where packet loss and high ping just makes you judder across someone else screen! In Eve that would be bad!
This becomes a problem when an ISP runs the connection through a crappy server/hop or has 'traffic management' engaged along with a host of other ISP processes and issues which will cause a few 1s and 0s to go missing.
After using PingPlotter (found in the EVEopedia at the bottom of the page) it looks like my connection to the Eve server is taking a dump on hop 7 and 8 where I had 50-100% packet loss, these servers are:
brhm-bb-1c-ae1-0.network.virginmedia.net (IP 62.254.42.210) and tcl5-ic-2-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net (212.250.15.210)
If I connect via a VPN to the Netherlands then back to London and the Eve server I have 0 packet loss on any of the hops/servers which proves it's not a problem on CCPs end (although it's the cause!).
I called Virgin Media today and managed to get through to someone in a 2nd line support role after various hang ups and other BS and went through all the details from the GM and showed him the PingPlotter output. His response was that he didn't know what that program did or how it connects so it must be wrong as using the Ping command in cmd.exe showed my latency as avg 21ms to Eve!!! He said they would only really do anything if the latency was higher than 80ms on a hop.
He then tried to explain that PingPlotter looked like I was dropping packets because it was flooding those hops/servers with packets and that I was being firewalled which would not affect only my Eve client! No one else would have the same issue!
If you're reading this and have Virgin Media as an ISP and you have Socket Closed messages with disconnects, can you run PingPlotter and see if your packets are dropping on the same hops/servers as mentioned above? I would love to call back and show them this thread if these two or other VM servers are the issue!?!?
Thank you |

You didn't want those sockets anyway.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'Hodor'. |

That said, CCP or one of their network partners has been getting hit with DDOS attacks for a while now.

Usually the tell you it's on your side or your ISP, that's just a lame excuse they don't have to give their customers proper compensation. |

This isn't an issue with DDoS that we may be having atm, this is concerning the socket closed issue on a good day for CCP! |
