As people will see from this post i am very facinated by the mercenary side of Eve and have followed it with big interest since starting up my Eve account..
I have always wondered how to take the first step to get something big going and how to keep it up..
Therefore i chose to look at the MC as both corporations and alliance..
Why did they become the best?
AS i see it there are a few main reasons they became what they are today..
  1. Dedicated leaders 2. Small/mid sized corporations 3. Good to sell themselfes 4. Timing 5. Results
  Why?
1.Without dedicated leaders you wont go anywhere further than the little box you think inside..
Seleene and Eyeshadow are two guys who got the mouth set up correctly and knows how to sell themselfes and hook up with the right people to boost your campaign.. No matter what the question is they get out of it with a good reply and save faces when things can become embarrasing..(except a few times when Eyeshadow meets Ugluuk in discussions which gets out fof hand)
2.The corporations were all small to medium sized with pilots who knew each other well..
Sharks were the pirate corp who used the knowledge from everyday ganking and brought something new and fresh ot the merc world..
BDCI were the merc corp( atleast in my eyes) and need no further introduction..
Then the genious part were that those corp`s were known and enough to get something started but they needed more numbers.. Two corp`s were chosen..NSN and The corporation..
NSN..Always part of something that failed..Like the PA..Had just became something in the merc world and were hungry for sucess..
The Corporation..A good corp that dont make much of themselfes..Like NSN they fitted in as proffesional pilots and makes the backbone of MC together with NSN..
3.While NSN and The Corp dont show themselfes much on forum we have sharks and bdci which are damn good at selling their services on the forum..
Not in a "look how much we freaking poon" way but more like a gentle man approach to it..
A good headline A introduction that makes you interested in their post.. Well written post which sometimes goes over to become a little arrogant which is needed..
They do good jobs for the right people and in return get favours back when annoucing a new job..
4.The timining is essential..They found just the right time to start a mercenary alliance..When alliances started getting bigger, small corp contracts were getting harder to complete in satisfactory ways and everyone screamed for a powerful corp to take em but got an alliance instead..
5.They take the right contracts and show good results to finish it all..

As a conclusion i think MC is an sucess cause:
They did what they wanted and picked the exact right people to do it without doubting what their goals were..
So when the time comes and you wanna make something new and exciting yourself you should look into the work these guys have done..
This is my kind of tribute to the MC for pulling off what i always wanted to do..I could have written much more but people got to read it and hopefully when it is short more people than MC members read it..
Keep on going MC and yes i know, there are many more reasons to the success, i just chose the ones i found most important.. Bush is my loverboy |

Been a few months since the last epeen-stroking thread for MC. Are you Seleene's alt? :D
MC are a success because of a few key points:
  1. PR - Oh yes they can sell themselves, they post when they have to and don't when it's not needed. They tend not to get involved in political arguments and when they are contracted to do a job, they complete it to the end regardless of it's outcome (including failures such as the Lacuna incident in Geminate). Some other merc corps, KIA for example, haven't managed the same level of diplomacy or professionalism - in this business, scars can take a while to heal (KIA contract on BoB is a case in point).
  2. Their results. Yes, they post favourable results after each campaign. But how many people look closer? I have. I watched them on 3 seperate campaigns - they gain a lot of the results by simple stupidity/carelessness on the target's part - wardeccing a large alliance is especially profitable - there are always those that travel alone in empire in various ships classes despite knowing full well there is a war dec on their alliance and they make easy pickings for experienced gate campers such as these. However, i digress - if it's just the results that count, fair enough but IMO any corp with focussed members could produce the same results.
All in, MC are a pretty good mercenary corporation because of the above, the perception of them is sky high - but I'd be interested to see what the outcome of a war between them and an equally focussed corp/alliance would be.

Well that's one theory, but let me state another which I think is closer to the mark.
  1) The MC is composed of PvP corporations whose income is protected, i.e they're funded through their contracts and any logistical activities of theirs take place in BoB-protected space. It's quite difficult to strike back at a foe whose logistical backbone is in heavily defended space and doesn't rely on the usual NPC'ing and mining.
  2) The MC is always on the offensive; they strike at an enemy on their own terms after having done research on their opponent, a luxury their victims can't afford. Their attacks are always composed of forces which are made to match or outclass their enemy's. Their enemies, being on the defensive, have to react to the MCs attacks on short notice.
  3) The MC attacks any member of the opposing force, regardless of whether they're in a PvP ship or an unarmed or unprepared craft; it's incredibly easy to get amazing kill ratios when you're striking quickly at an enemy that isn't ready for you. Burn Eden does it, we do it; every 0.0-based corporation knows this. Conversely, MC members are never exposed to this danger (see point 1) so the kill ratio always remains in their favour.
  4) Propaganda. It's a powerful tool that often wins battles for you before you arrive n the field. It's how alliances like BoB and corps like BE operate; they appear unbeatable so their enemies don't think they can be beaten and thus, tend to lose or be so unwilling to commit themselves to a battle they think they can't win that they really can't win.
  5) The points you mentioned as well; they have good leaders and are well-structured to get the job done.
This certainly isn't intended as a stab at the MC; these are teh kinds of tactics that any successful PvP outfit needs to use in order to get good results and I'd do the same. On the other hand, you should never delude yourself into thinking that the MC, or anyone else, is unbeatable. -----

Hehheh... Yeah, it's a fine line to be sure, m8. Oh well... It's interesting to see some of the comments in the OP. I won't comment on all of it, but I'll offer my insights on a couple of the points raised:
While the original "MC" idea was mine, but it was Charity Regard who brought FRICK onboard at first and helped it become a reality. She weathered the initial public relations storms with me and kept the dream moving forward with style.
Eyeshadow came onboard shortly after the formation of the actual alliance and stepped up in a lot of ways more than many people realize. He's done a lot more than just be loud on the forums. It was under Hygelac that FRICK finally renounced piracy completely and commited to the merc profession fully. Guys like Squagel and Neurotic Cat (the current CEO) have kept things moving forward. Then there's some guy named Farjung who I seem to remember losing a lot of Taranis'...
When we expanded to four corps, NSN was an easy choice to make. Leafo set up and still maintains the MC website and he and Lowa's vids both contributed immensely to our success. The MC has indeed been 'blessed' with a number of people who love Adobe Premiere.
TC never needed to be in the spotlight because thier results always spoke for themselves. Eelak and Generatorn helped round things out with thier dedication.
Today, Dol and Maro in CONIN share a lot of the vision that originally launched MC.
What I do find interesting is that people don't realize how small the MC actually is. I don't think we're more than 120 actual people in RL.
The MC would never be where it is today without the efforts of a lot of people. In addition to all of these names, there are numerous directors and even 'normal' players whose dedication and enthusiasm kept the fire burning. I suspect every alliance out there has a similar story. -

-V- came closer than anyone else to giving us a real challange. They met us head on almost every night for three weeks and it was a lot of fun.
I don't think we've ever claimed to be unbeatable. I know for a fact that on several contracts we've overplanned quite a bit, expecting much more resistance than we actually got. Perhaps that's one reason we've done so well - we try to never underestimate any potential foe.
I suspect that at some point our "time will come" and someone is going to kick our asses pretty hard, or at least bloody our nose a bit. It will probably come from somewhere we least expect it as well... which is all part of the fun of EVE tbh.

Personally I think it is awesome that an entity with a relatively small member base is able to achieve things that would normally take much bigger entities to achieve.
The MC PR machine is probably the best in EVE, of that there is little doubt.
Another item that I believe that has kept MC at the top is fully embracing the Capital Ship era. The fact that MC can project massive firepower across EVE within a couple of days is another of their very desirable attributes.
I do think MC deserve all the kudos they get... they have proved that in EVE you can achieve anything you set your mind to by setting clear goals and then retaining complete dedication to them.

Well it's the same for MC as it is for BOB and ASCN among others. It takes time, skill, dedication and a small portion of luck.
EVE has been running so long now. Nothing notable in EVE is achieved quickly anymore.

Edited by: Arano Tizogo on 08/08/2006 13:20:02 To begin with, no im not a MC alt hence why i didn`t know Eyeshadow weren`t the one getting Sharks into MC..
I am a pure pvp character who got lots of interest in merc work and background info on people who have done well..
Seleene has been the main reason to my mercenary interest and my personal goal is to someday achieve something similar in Eve..
I often read these comments in MC post`s:
1.There is only MC people posting here 2.They just blob and use their numbers 3.They cant do anything as individuals
and i can just keep on going..
First i agree, many MC post before anyone else get into the thread..I like it..Shows enthusiasm..
What i find interesting is as Seleene mentioned, they got only around 120 members and often fight alliances who have more than that number online.. When it comes to blobbing i just see it as pure dedication for the contract when so many wants to fight and kill for the employer..
Been a long time since i really saw people giving them credit so i figured it was time for a topic to let people remember how much work they did and still do to let you call them arrogant ****s and what more that you come up with..

I'm new to the MC but what has really struck me is the teamwork and I think that was left out for the OPs post. Doesn't matter if you have well skilled players or good leaders or whatever if they don't work as a team with their noses in the same direction then it doesn't mean anything.
Mind you I still get awe struck by the caliber of people here, I was in a gang with Ikvar and Farjung the other day, OMG!

The dedication of individuals within MC is astounding: RL time poured into each contract and the organisation is smply massive, showing that each indicidual member of the MC has a flare for eve that goes beyond just the game. Even though I've only been here for a few months I can safely say I never want to go anywhere else.

MC's strength is all down to its uber videos which scare the opposition so much that they think they have lost before they even start fighting

Is the OP an alt or just a merc working for Caldari Provisions? He did get one thing right... they know how to sell themselves.

  Read the whole topic mate..
I am not an MC alt..I am a real character and if you look at the recruitment thread i am looking for a new corp since i dont feel comfortable in caldari provisions..I was unlucky and landed there the exact same time as Daniel Jackson and he annoys the crap outta me..
So if there is a merc corp out there looking for a well speaking, mature minmatar specialist please save me and reply to my thread..
  Now back to the topic..
You dont have to be a MC alt to admire their work..What they have accomplished is awesome and i like the fact that they weren`t a big bunch of known names when it started.. They have became it thru their work..
As i have a big interest in merc work i thought i should study the best and set my goals high while letting them inspire me..
It`s like they say, if you wanna be the best you gotta learn from the best..

I recognise your name Arano. Did you fly for NRG Corp under my brothers (Pphearr) leadership or where you ever in FIX during my short stay there?
