This is one of those ideas you get right before you wake up, so I'll have to see what it looks like in print before I click the reset fields button.
I think I was dreaming about pizza or something. (Haven't eaten properly in days.) There was some other stuff I won't mention here, and then veldspar of all obscenities. Haven't touched the stuff in at least a year, maybe more. But I was like, "Mmm.. crunchy" and broke off a piece.
So I got to thinking: What if there was an analyzer mod that showed you a list of loose pieces or veins or whatever you wanna call them when the roid was scanned?
The next step is you could pick a piece, (probably the biggest you greedy jerks), and you apply a laser to it, that is, a single laser. Then you get a chance to succeed.
Skills affect your chance to succeed. Specialist mining ships get bonuses to success chance. I suppose the biggest slices should have the worst odds of success. For every laser you have, you can work on a separate piece, or a separate asteroid.
The only question I have is: What's more likely to produce a toxic cloud? Success or Failure?

So what heppens if you succeed? You get a bigger bit of ore? The Retriever pretty much fills its cargo hold every cycle, and battlecruiser miners have to cycle their lasers diligently to avoid overfilling. A "win" by your system might lead to a huge bonus chunk of ore being discharged into space, serving to deplete the asteroid faster without increasing your yield.

Gosh. That would be terrible.
It's not like they could make the cargo holds bigger or hold only minerals or be irrelevant or do anything else.
I shouldn't post first thing in the morning. I tend to forget certain things at that time such as "mining sucks," and "miners are suckers, let em suffer."
I'm still hungry though.
