What ship you would be best flying depends on what you want to do with it. For most things the Maller would be better. Other times you will be better in a frigate.
What are you going to do with the ship?

An omen is a more offense minded ship, bit more agile. A maller is more defense based, it's like the proverbial rock, I like the slot layout better on the Maller.
Maller > * (imo ofc)
I suggest using frigate class, shortrange weapons on it. The great thing about it is that it doesn't get bonuses to weapontype really, so you can fit whatever you're best skilled at. Mine uses Light neutron II's but projectile or lasers ofcourse work as well.
Also, PVE works better with defenseive setup/ships, so still the maller.

For PvE, you will find the Maller is more forgiving in terms of skills, while the Omen is less brutal in terms of losses incurred while learning about the ship. You can fit 2 heatsinks to either for similar damage, but you overlook the Maller's tanking advantage by doing this. They have an agility and speed difference, as stated, and the Omen can also field 3 small drones, which may or may not be helpful in waiting for a small threat to die with help from your nosferatu.
Lasers 101:
Pulses have the best range of all short range turrets, but the tracking is worst against anything orbitting you really close, really fast. Luckilly, most things going really fast at this range can't be touched by the slightly faster medium turret either without stasis webbifier support.
Beams have the best tracking of all long range turrets, but the worst range in their class. Actually, the optimal is pretty solid, but there isn't the same falloff to deal with, not that you'd want to go deeper into falloff than 25% anyhow.
Laser platforms are mid-range fighters. Unlike Blaster and Autocannon boats, you do not want to keep up close and personal even though your armor is sometimes better. Ideally, you either want all targets to be at the edge of your webbing range (consider double webs), or you want to be on the hair-thin margin outside their webs, yet within your optimals. Dominate damage by dominating range.
Since you don't have any missiles, you may want to find another Amarr to hunt with, either in pvp or npcing. The advantage is you can concentrate on your tanking and damage output to targets you are able to keep at range, while at the same time supporting one another if very small targets get too close. It is often very easy to hit a small target that is orbitting your friend if he is at your optimal range because he is pulling tight circles with little transversal.

Edited by: Sakura Nihil on 08/08/2006 15:43:56 If you like lasers, go with the Omen - its faster, cheaper to lose, and can do great damage if you work on the skills that go with it. Not to mention its useful in PvP, whereas all the Maller is good for is tanking sentry guns and holding targets in place while the big boys come to destroy it.

It's also a nice primary, with a proper setup that thing will withstand a lot of punishment

I've always enjoyed the maller over the omen, it's a tank.
I threw small guns(frigate guns) on it along with the largest armour plate I could and I did lvl 2 missions with absolutely no problem. |

I admit to not knowing much about EVE, but I do know all about lvl 2 missions in mallers!
Setup with a ton of armour plate, an armour resist plate, 4 lasers, a couple of armour repairers, a couple of Nos'es, a webifier, and assorted crystals. With that sort of kit you can fight from 40km range down to 5km range easily.
Using that variety of kit, I have had zero problems on all lvl 2 missions.....with never less than 50% armour remaining, even when tanking 7 or more mobs.
I have yet to try out lvl 3 missions in it, but with an easy tanking setup and lots of different crystals, lvl 2 is no problem for any skill point player :)
