It's called giving them a taste for free or less than market value.
This is a common marketing tactic... even druglords caught on.
Us veteran addicts will do anything to keep our supply of the blue coming... even if it means stealing billions out of corporate hangars from our friends.
Veterans are more likely to PLEX an account... which means you play for free if you have the will to earn it. Most new players think 10m ISK is all they will ever need. |

Once a customer, retention isn't as important as securing new capitol. After all, it's like the circle of life, player are born and players die off. If a business didn't offer an incentive for new players to be "born"...there would be only death. For the "middle aged" players, a little something here and there keeps them interested in life. I took that class too.... chapter 2 says do something for the loyal customers too... retention is another key element. Sorry Kaely you must have been asleep for the rest of your Marketing 101 class. What you're proposing is the same principle that causes other companies that rely on repeat business (yes subbing for more than a month is repeat business) to fail. For those companies customer retention is overlooked and it has negative consequences for the company as a whole. All you have to do is look at some of the statements CCP has released over the years that shows the probability of a new player to stick with the game. It goes to show that since the NPE is such a poor selling point of the game right now that it's not until a player gets beyond that point and settled that you can start relying on them to be a continual subscriber. And for the record I'm not saying getting new people in is a bad thing.
Not all business models are the same, you should know that. Eve is a game, it will not be around for ever. CCP knows this, the player base knows this (at least I hope they do). The bottom line is to make as much as they can, while they can. Eve is not a typical business that is intended to stick around. It is a short term investment and money maker. I have run businesses before, my husband is an architect and runs his own. It is a completely different model than that of eve. Other than that, I agree with you. Players come and go, mostly the new ones. I think that CCP needs to take a better stance on customer retention. After all, the vets are the bread and butter of eve.
If I had a nickel for every time someone said women don't play eve, I'd have a bag of nickels to whack the next person who said it.. |

I like that kind of math. Don't you? Ultimately, CCP needs money. They can't spend PLEX to pay their light bill.
I've always loved these posts. It always makes me laugh because the people who post them clearly think that PLEX just appear out of thin air, and nothing goes to CCP.
Go and visit this page: https://secure.eveonline.com/PLEX/
PLEX costs money. Every PLEX has been bought with real money. The PLEX then has two uses: be sold on the market for ISK, or redeemed for game time. The people who buy PLEX for game time pay with ISK, and that ISK goes to the player who bought a PLEX with real money. CCP still gets their money from each and every PLEX.
Your "math" is wrong. CCP can totally use the money they made from selling PLEX to pay for their light bill. http://tetrisisunrealistic.blogspot.com.au/
