Let's talk about some of the show's we've seen.
My first concert was The Ramones when I was 15. That was 23 yrs ago (ugh) and I still have the shirt I got there, and the ticket stub. They came on stage about 45 minutes late, you could tell Joey was strung out on something, he steadied himself with the mic stand, and never moved throughout the whole show, lol. It was a small venue so we got up very close. It was a good first show
Last concert I saw was GWAR. I took my little brother along as a birthday gift. Im glad I got to see them before Oderus died, and I still can't belive that. The mosh pit was insane, and for a long time once I was too tired to continue I'd try to get out and the ppl at the border would bounce me back in lol.
Best part of the show? Slymenstra Hymen took off her outer shirt, threw it to the crowd, and I got it! Still have it, and it's stained a pinkish color from all the fake blood we all got soaked with. GWAR was definitelty a unique experience
BEST concert experience ever was Lollapalooza in 93 or 94 (cant remember, lol.) The lineup had Rage Against the Machine, Front 242 (sadly they suck live,) Babes in Toyland, Alice in Chains, Primus, and Tool. Tool was on the small 2nd stage, so like the Ramones show, I got really close. Like I almost could untie Maynard's shoes, lol.
Ive seen lots of local shows with local bands. Ilive near theUniversity of TN campus, and actually used to live on campus. Lots of good talent that'll never makeit big vov
Tell us about your concert experiences!!

First concert was day 2 of the US Festival in 1982. Standing out in the 110 degree heat in San Bernardino, we rocked out to Dave Edmunds, the Cars, Eddie Money, Pat Benatar, Tom Petty...
My last concert was Bad Company and Ican'tremember, several years ago here in Houston.
Best concert is a tie: Queen and Billy Squier at the Oakland Colliseum back in the early 80s, Sammy Hagar and Krokus at the Summit in Houston a few years later, and Cheap Trick opening for REO Speedwagon (Cheap Trick rocked it, REO died on stage) at Southern Star Amphitheater at Astroworld a few years after that... So, you're a bounty hunter. No, that ain't it at all. Then what are you? I'm a bounty hunter. |

First concert I went to was Monsters of Rock festival, back in the '80s when I was around 15 : Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax Helloween and some other local band I didn't care about. Awesome experience, not just because it was my first concert or because of the bands involved, but also because back then, without interwebs, MTV (not in my country at the time) or other private TV stations for that matter, you knew very little about the bands you liked and cared about: all you had were those LP covers and insets to look at (I fondly remember studying every bit of the material included in the fantastic original LP edition of Maiden's "Live After Death", as I listened to the records).
So all you had to go with was some random interview in some magazine once in a while, hearsay, and random photos you came across, which gave all those bands a sense of mystery and wonder. And then, after listening to all those records so many times, trying to visualize and imagine what they were like IRL live on a stage, it was quite the experience seeing them performing that music you knew so well right in front of you at last.
Last one I went to was Acid Mothers Temple & The Space Paranoid (a bunch of weirdo Japanese psychedelic lords) playing a concert consisting solely of Black Sabbath covers, done in their own Psilocybe-drenched ways.
As to favorite concerts, perhaps seeing the Butthole Surfers back in 1993, playing a special 4th of July outdoor show in Berkeley. I reckon they were at their peak at that time, and the whole thing was decidedly wild, strange and intense. Gibby setting his arm on fire, manically twisting knobs on his "Gibbytronics" voice-effects box, while highly graphic and disturbing movies were being played on a large screen behind them, only to be followed by scenes of dogs running in slow motion through flower fields. And as a bonus, I also got to meet and talk a bit with the Dead Kennedy's East Bay Ray, who happened to be skulking around in some corner, sitting on the grass.
I saw the Butthole Surfers some years later again, and it was a very different experience, they seemed quite burned out, almost as if they were a completely different band altogether.
I also watched GWAR at a tiny club sometime in the mid '90s, very memorable experience as well, and more recently Watain, whose concerts are more of a Satanic Mass than simply a music show, and you can tell they put a lot of effort and heart into it, unlike other shows were the band seems to come on stage to basically punch the clock and collect the check. Actually, many other memorable concerts along the years, but probably the Butthole Surfers one comes out on top.

First concert was Foreigner in 1984. I was 6 and my mom took me for my birthday because they were my favorite band.
Last concert was Fleshgod Apocalypse the other night. They are great live.
Most memorable concert was probably Tool in 1996 on their Aenema tour. I have seen just about every heavy band in existence and still that concert was the loudest I have ever heard.
My favorite concert was probably Alice in Chains in 2010 for the first time (they're my favorite band). It was just special after waiting nearly 20 years to see them live. |

First was Aerosmith in 99, I was 18 at it was at the Hollywood bowl. Went with my dad, sister, best friend and his dad, was pretty cool.
Last one I went to...Was Goo Goo Dolls in Reno. Was fun
My fav was Collective Soul at this small dive in San Diego that no longer exist. This was basicly the start of there comeback tour with the launch of the Youth Album. It was intimate, and awesome. The opener was a great band that has not done much called low millions, but they totally rocked the place. OMG Comet Mining idea!!! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=331766 |

First was Heart around 1978 in Austin, Texas. Good technical performance, but somehow, it just had no charisma, inspiration, or whatever it is that makes a concert more than just people performing their songs.
Last was Hugh Cornwell, formerly of the Stranglers, in a regular fairly seedy club in Manhattan. That was great. Hugh played the hell out of that black Telecaster, with the drummer from Blondie and a bass player named Fish.
Best was Talking Heads, again in Austin, on their Speaking in Tongues tour. Those guys and all of their backup musicians and singers just enjoyed the hell out of playing. It was like a party that the audience got to enjoy too. The Cure on their The Caterpillar tour around the same time was a close second. Dark, almost uncomfortably expressionist and emotional, driving, trippy. It really had that excellent post-punk understated extreme vibe of those old times. Strangely enough my very first concert and the last one I saw were the same band but different years. Trans Siberian Orchestra(TSO) go on tour every Christmas and put on an awesome show!
The first time I saw them I didnt like the first half but loved the second half, the last show I loved the whole thing. We got 11th row almost middle! Awesome set design, fire explosions and an awesome laser show. Being up front def makes a difference!
At the end of the show they had 2 guitarists on 2 different cranes, as they were coming down one started dipping toward the audience before it got back over the stage, I thought I was going to have to hold it up to keep from getting hit. The guy just kept on playing until it got close enough for him to jump off, he jumped off then kissed the floor! lol. |

my first was sonic youth/pavement in '92 (i didnt know who pavement was at the time tho). i was 15 and my parents wouldnt let me go so i made up some story about staying at my friend's house... we couldnt find anyone with a car that wanted to go so we rode our bikes over 40 miles to get there! it was pretty fun but on the way home we got picked up by the cops (this was like 3 AM we were riding our bikes down the highway). they drove us home (we were about halfway back when they stopped us) and woke up our parents... that part wasnt much fun
(i also happened to see tool at lolla. i think it was '94. i didnt know who they were at the time either. most people that saw it seemed to agree that the had the best set tho. the main thing i remember about seeing alice in chains was layne staley sitting down through the whole thing. he was barely even there)
i cant really choose a favorite show but maybe my favorite single song ive seen live was frank black around the turn of the century (before the pixies reunion etc) playing "jumping beans". i hadnt ever really paid much attention to that song (the record version is fairly weak) but he got really into it. it was a stripped down semi-acoustic set but by the end he was just screaming about jumping beans. i was about 3 feet in front of him. it was intense
another good one for me was a few years ago das racist/miho hatori/kool keith. i talked to kool keith for a while. he had a sweater wrapped around his face the whole time
unfortunately ive developed some health problems that have greatly limited my concert goings. i havent seen much the last couple years... the last one i remember being cool was a yo la tengo hanukkah show where their guest was kurt wagner from lambchop. the show wasnt that great but i enjoyed seeing them play together. also sonny rollins a while ago. that was cool |

Wow...this will dredge back some memories...
First concert was with my parents when I was young. Tom T. Hall. Thats the sort of stuff my parents listened to and what I grew up on. My first concert with friends was Devo. That was fun.
Add Foghat, Molly Hatchet at a big outdoor event but I was pretty wasted that day...
I saw Prince when he toured with Sheila E. Was a fun concert but now I'm a bit ashamed of admitting that one. Seen a few concerts at biker events like .38 special in Sturgis and Quiet Riot in Iowa. To this day, .38 Special is still one of my favorite bands.
Pink Floyd. That is probably my all time favorite. When they did their dome tours for Delicate Sound of Thunder. Incredible show.
The last one, which still ranks up as a favorite of mine, was Blue Oyster Cult at the state fair. The reason this one rates is because my son is a huge BOC fan and how excited he got when he got to see his favorite band. Co-Host of the High Drag Podcast. http://highdrag.wordpress.com/

First concert? I don't remember the bands, was in a more than moderately altered state at the time, at the theatre on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune shortly after I rotated back from a tour overseas in 76. I remember seeing the music coming out of the stacks...so that should give you some indication of the state I was in. :)
Best? Yeah that one I'll never forget, a concert for the ages. Kansas, the concert that created the bootleg album "Monolith in the Storm", July '79 at Alpine Valley, in a colossal thunderstorm. Out on the grass, soaked to the bone, properly buzzed with good friends; the band's music counterpointed by raging thunder and their laser show upstaged by volley after volley of lightning. There will never be another show like it.
Most recent, Blue Rodeo last year in Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island. Good solid show, tight band...as always. Ralph King-Griffin wrote: "Eve deliberately excludes the stupid and the weak willied." EvE: Only the strong-willied need apply.

1st major concert (well it was actualy a festival ) was back in 89 the reading festival as i had just moved to the town and the headline act was the mission ( wayne hussy) what a fkn awesome atmosphere id heard him before and sort of like the goth scene anyways but to see them live blew my mind ! been following that type of music ever since ( no ! not the fkn emo shite )
too many bands have been seen since to mention them all between then and now but my last music weekender was this one ( missus is an avid fan so I put up with it ) and my next one is this one because my wifes band is playing there ... shes the lead singer in the 1st band that's playing |

I agree that a big part of the mainstream rap is fake, still that doesn't give you a reason to tell me to **** off... Also, there is a very big chuck of real rap with meaningful lyrics, And I don't only listen to rap.
But hey, let me tell you something, I'm not going to defense myself or the music that I love to some ignorant short sighted idiot. People like you are the reason I hate the majority of the goths and alternative music fans, showing off how progressed your music taste is and don't tolerate other genres.
In the meantime, I'll roll another spliff and blast my favorite tunes please don't bother to check it out Jason, according to your previous reactions in this thread, you're probably to ignorant to understand good poetic rhymes.
P.S I find it quite ironic, that two of the biggest misconception about hiphop, is that hiphop is disrespectful to women ( I agree there are some fake rappers talking about ho's and bitches all the time, but this is not the majority ) and it's all about criminal activities. Still you're the one talking about musicians ending up in jail or clubbing your wife to death. |

I appreciate everyone's input, even if I personally may not like their chosen genres. I'm more interested in the experience, the feelings, etc.
So, I thought of a concert that surprised me. My mother is a big Elton John fan, so when he came to Knoxville I bought a couple of tickets so I could take her. Now, I do like that old song of his "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," but thats as far as Elton and I go. That said, I actually really enjoyed the show! He is without a doubt one of the best showmen Ive seen. Man he's like a ball of lightening bouncing all over the stage, bouncing, jumping on, standing on his piano bench, etc. I was really impressed.

well that escalated quickly.
Anyhoo.. Sadly my first concert was Michael Jackson. My parents forced me to go with them so I hope that doesn't count. :(
The first concert I willfully went to was that first Monsters of Rock show 88'? Van Halen (Hagar) , Scorpions, Metallica and Dokken. I was happy that day, 16y/o. Even though some dudes smashed into the back of my truck so hard I hit the car in front of me AND that car hit the car in front of it. Everyone in the wreck was going to the show though so nobody really cared heh. Plus they were probably a bit buzzed. Dude actually ended up paying for new bumpers for my truck so it worked out.
Last was Santana this summer. Pretty awesome.
Favorite geeze. Probably Fugazi because it was so damn hard to find one of their shows. At least up the NW. Just a random phone call from a buddy telling me to be ready in 5 minutes. Those guys never did ticketmaster or any real advertising at all. Word of mouth. |

"My Concert Friend"-- A Short Short Story I had a good friend named Mark. He was one of those guys who always invited trouble. He looks a lot like Mickey Rooney.
One day, Mark said, "Damn, this small Texas city sure is boring. Khergit, want to go see Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks?" I didn't really. Neil was all 70s-like. Earth-colored clothes, hairy, acoustic-strummy. Now we're in the precision 80s, having to choose between haircut English bands, weird brainy synthesizer tones bands such as Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, The Residents, Swiss F-1 team sponsor millionaire or something Yello, the always under-noticed Bill Nelson Not to mention the punk and gothic guys who were setting the stage for post-Led Zep/Stones/Who "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what?"-á -The Sex Pistols (2006) |

Eevee, pls.
My taste in music and the means to play it is pretty old fashioned.
What if I told you I still have a record player?
And several old classics on vinyl?
And that I am in fact just now listening to Iron Maiden's Killers LP on vinyl?
You youngsters will never understand, but every scratch and crackle is awesome and adds to the listening experience. I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

First - Cosmic rough Riders, Bangor
Stood right next to the base woofer thingy and had ringing ears for the rest of the night.
Last - Blur, Hyde Park
Awesome, awesome show with all the fan favourite marred by the fact I was bursting to go after a few pints, and ended up listening to Song 2 being played whilst using the latrines.
Favourite - The Cooper Temple Clause, The Quad, London
One of those cult status bands during the indie rock boom of the early 2000s, mixing in electronica, metal, and punk rock. Didn't get so drunk, but I left with gruff vocals from shouting and singing along to the songs. A lot of energy from the band and some mahem from the crowd. Good times. |

Confirming that Fields of the Nephilim are still amongst the best life bands ever.
Oh, and Sisters of Mercy are the worst, don't even bother with buying a ticket.

surprisingly when me and wife went to see the nephlim and the sisters the amount of peeps that walked out as soon as the nephelim finished their set was suprising looks like most of the goths don't like them either |

Quite true. Thing is, the old Sisters songs are awesome and altogether classics by now. Almost every goth worth his salt knows them up and down. Many bands did cover versions, most of them quite decent. The irony is that nobody does a worser job than Sisters when performing these songs.
Take the eternal classic, "Alice", for example. this is a recent performance by them. And it's not the fault of the video, the sound is really that bad, and you cannot see the stage at all because of all the fog.
Now take any cover version by an other band, any one you want, and you'll realize why most people like Sisters of Mercy any more nowadays....

I've only been to a couple large-scale concerts that I was dragged to by friends, not worth mentioning. First, I don't remember but it would have been local rappers in my city. Last I think was Fair To Midland, again dragged to by friends.

First - Lamb of God, Darkest Hour, God Forbid, and some other band I can't remember, in 2001.
Last - Katatonia and Opeth last year.
Favorite - The last one. I had been planning to see both of those bands for the last decade, but work got in the way every time they played near me. As a bonus, Opeth's playlist for that show didn't involve any of the new hippie bullshit they've put on their last two albums. |

First and favorite: Nine Inch Nails - 2008: Lights in the Sky
This show was beyond incredible. I have seen Nine Inch Nails twice since and they still have not topped this particular tour on a visual scale. This year's tour was great, but still didn't approach the intensity of LitS.
Last show: NIN 2014
Second favorite: Either Tool or Atmosphere. I attended both of these concerts in 2012. Gêâ |

My first concert was Eve 6 and Third Eye Blind, way back in the day when I was 14 or 15.
Last concert I went to was Bayfest on Oahu, but honestly I don't remember a lot of it since I was drinking all the beers.
My absolute favorite show I got to go to was Dragonforce when they played Honolulu. Their stage presence was amazing and their bass player played through a solo while chugging Jack Daniels from the bottle. |

First concenert was a rock festival in Munich, Germany (Rock im Park), 1994. There were dozens of bands but to name a few, Van Hallen, Slash and the Snake Pit, Faith no More, Bonjovi, etc, etc, etc.
The last concert was one of my favourite in Seoul, Korea 2012. It was a Morrissey concert and the best part of it was that I got to see him sing "I know it's over" for the first time. I haven't been to his concerts as much but I have a mate who's been to over 10 Morrissey concerts and never seen him perform this song live, so it was special to see him perform one of my favourite songs.
Not my favourite band, but one of the best concerts I've been to was Radiohead's OK computer tour in Munich, Germany, 97 or 98 I think. They came to stage like over an hour late but when the hall went dark and 'Fitter, healtiher...' began to roll out the crowd went mad and just the atmosphere through out the whole concert was electrifying.
So many good memories when I look back now, mostly from 90s and 2000s as that was my teenage & 20s. |

Yeah, me too. Born in the 70's, raised in the 80's, came of age in the 90's, traveled the country in the 2000's.
Good times.
As Tom Petty says, "well the good old days may not return..." but it's ok. Life goes on and is what we make of it.

My first one was, um, Steve Hillage in 1977.
A few weeks later I saw Rainbow and they were amazing and then a year later I was at the first ever Whitesnake gig (front row, slap bang centre) and I have a front of house poster of that night framed above my drum kit in my studio.
Best gigs? Well, I often seem to get front row dead centre for a Albert Lee and he's brilliant to watch just feet away. I've seen Rory Gallagher in a small Belgian village hall which was intimate and wonderful. I've seen Thunder in a small cafe in Southern Germany tear the place apart.
But the best? Has to be Reading Festival in 1980. The line-up was out of this world. Whitesnake headlined, Gillan played with his own band, Rory Gallagher was there, Pat Travers too. Not to forget that was the year that Slade made their comeback when they replaced Ozzy Osbourne at the last minute. Who else was there? Well, Nine Below Zero, a brilliant estuary blues band tore the place apart. UFO were there. So were Def Leppard and so were Iron Maiden.
Bruce Dickinson was there, not with Maiden but with his previous band, Samson. Gary Moore's band was there too as was the band from South Wales, Tygers of Pan Tang.
Now, nothing ever came close to Reading '80. And it didn't even rain.
The last band I saw was last year; Rush in Sheffield. Magic as ever.
But when it comes to the personal touch; this lady often crashes out here on the sofa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ltq_5jwn14
Top that. Pam:-á I wonder what my name means in Welsh?Nessa: Why? |
