The topic sums it up rather succinctly. My character's standings are finally high enough to allow the use of a quality Level 3 agent, and I'm just kind of curious what to expect (or fear, or flee from, etc.).
Specifically, am I likely to get smoked in my Dura-Maller?

Ah cool, someone from CAD. I've got a few friends in there.
You should be able to run level 3 agents in a cruiser, just need to be carefull about it. Ones like "Duo of Death" you should be able to do easily, any of the extravaganza missions will be tough though. Look at the rewards, that will give you an idea of how bad the mission is.

I would never dream of running level 3's in a cruiser unless you want to warp out all the time and lose your ship from time to time.
Get a BC at LEAST... I'd really suggest a BS if you wanna run them easily without fear of death, especially if low on SP.
But above all else, make sure to use the correct two resists for each mission. ALWAYS use two hardeners at least, if not 4 (4 is a good idea). Two per type... and never use invuln fields if you're not in at least a BC, or you're ****ing away tons of CAP for pitiful resists.

As long as you read up on the missions before accepting them you should be fine, that would remove annny nasty suprises :)

Anything smaller than a BS can't survive the hardest lvl3 missions, for example extravaganzas, black market hub, mordus ... When i started lvl3 in my BS i was nearly shoot down in one of the first missions, i couldnt tank enough and kill them fast enough. cruiser is far underpowered for hardest lvl3 missions. even a BC is not enough for hardest lvl3 missions, i have helped people in BC because they couldnt solo the missions and seeked for help. |

Untrue. I run level 3's constantly in my Caracal. True, some missions I have to warp out and back in on, such as: Downing the Slavers pt2, second room, Extras in the mostly sentry rooms, etc. But, they are easy for the most part if you research the mission first and know what to expect, which ships to kill first.

You can do all lvl 3 missions a BC easy if you fit a good tank.

I had very little trouble doing lvl 2 in a frig, but found the jump from 2 to 3 alot different than the jump from 1 to 2, your definately gunna want a bc.
I have been running 3's for about 3 weeks in both a cyclone and ferox without many problems, the ferox seems to work better for me as a newer player.

What? Just about every level three can be done with a BC and solo. There's only a couple you may need help on. Then again, this is only if you have Med-High skills for the ship you're flying which you should have anyhow. And for level fours you can do the majority of them solo with a BS, like I said before, everything relies on your skills and of course your set-up.
Note: You make more iskies when you solo missions.

Way, way off.
I can do 2s in a punisher. T1 frigate. Cruiser makes it a bit faster, but it's more fun in a puni.
BS in L3 is overkill. I can do almost all of them fine in a BC, solo. I don't have great skills involving BCs though, so I needed a friend once or twice. Definately don't need a BS though.

lvl1 - enyo lvl2 - enyo lvl3 - enyo lvl4 - enyo (takes effing ages and sentry guns will just stop you dead)
But seriously, get a battlecruiser for lvl3 until you have the skills and knowledge to run them in a cruiser.
lvl4 solo in a BS takes a good amount of sp (7-8mill or so should do if focussed on your ship), and tactics and patience count for a lot. Experience really does count a lot in this game.

If you dont have enough SP to fly a BC then chances are you dont have enough SP to do a lvl 3 in a cruiser.
There are a few that are particularly easy but most of them will give a newb in a cruiser a bad day.
Wherever you went - here you are.

I've been doing Level 3 missions in a cruiser (Thorax) for a little while (the Gallente BC is just too ugly ), and the most important bit of advice I have to offer is to check the mission details carefully before you accept a mission. I use the bonus deadline as a guide - usually the shorter the bonus deadline, the easier the mission. I still turn down missions with a bonus deadline of more than about 3 and a half hours. Be ready to warp out frequently. Find out as much as you can about a mission before you decide whether you're going to attempt it or not - use the various mission guides, ask around in the in-game channels. Know what you're going to be up against, and fit your ship accordingly. Be prepared for webbers - they're the ones causing me the most problems in Level 3 missions.
Ideally, have a friend or 2 on standby who can bail you out if things do go pearshaped.
Good luck :)

id say for newish types of players u really ned (some try to go in one month up to 4 solo in a very iffy BS setup with minimal skills) to only take on what u can handle the alternative is co op type. Ie join a corp that is local and can assist and u can assist in team mission running

I'v run lvl3's in Maller - Prophecy - Apocplypse - Retribution - Zealot. So far the Zealot is my favourit. I just don't have the skills to use the BS yet. But the Zealot is realy getting it done. So get working on getting a HAC, it rocks for agent running :D

Battlecruisers seems to work quite well on most of the missions and stuff like serpentes pirate invasion I can do in my Thorax with around a million in combat oriented skills.
Lost two Brutixs on the last pocket of level 3 mordus invasion though, whole damn pocket agores you and wtfbbq you with missiles from long range while two ceptors tackle you.
Massive attack is another mission to be vary of due to the high respawn rates in it.

I think its noteworthy to say that the higher the quality of agent, and the lower the sec rating of the system your running them in the easier or more difficult they get.
A level 3 -20 agent in a 1.0 system will be a good place to start for someone with low skills.
I have been running a level 3 qual 2 agent in a Brutix for a while now and havent really had many troubles, had to warp out on a couple of missions but mainly due to me making stupid mistakes.
I have almost 4 mill sp btw, and 2 mill of that is in learning and 500k odd in industry/mining. So it is doable with low skills.
Think its been said already but a good tactic is to look on the web before each mission and get the damage types of the enemy you will be facing well tanked. Also for levels like massive attack, where everything targets you as soon as you warp in, a good plan is to keep moving.
In a BC you can outrun the Cruisers with AB on, the Intys and Frigates will slowly gain on you and you can pick them off at your leisure. Last time I did it, they didnt even break my shield, and I have an armor tank.

depends on your skills as some above will tell you.
Low skills level 3: Battlecruiser or battleship level 4: battleship or gang of battlships
high skills: level 3: cruiser or battlecruiser or Hac or whatever level 4: battlecruiser, hac, battleship whatever you like
you will know
e.g. I'm not too far off level 4 agents now and started out doing level 3 mission in a caracal, which i found a little tricky at times. I've now changed to a ferox which makes it more comfortable.

No. no no no
It's not directly relevant to the OP's question, but it's noteworthy to correct this. Quality and sec rating DO affect the rewards/bonus and LP payout of missions, but they don't affect their difficulty. That's why low-sec missioning is greater risk (from pirates)/greater reward, because missions aren't any tougher in low sec.

Nonsense.
I have run hundreds of thousands of LPs in a tech 1 equipped heavy missile ferox. I warp out occasionally. Once I figured the right tactics to use in a few places (downing the slavers, II), I've had no further problems and very few warpages.
Ship setup is critical and a lot of people flat out don't check it out. They just do whatever their setup has morphed into over time instead of jumping to whatever is known to be optimal for their situation.
