Hello, Im new, and after asking around in game and getting no help I came here.
I don't know if EvE is one of those forgoe defenses for all out offense type games, where there just isn't much benefit to defense or not...
But if not, is there a ship that is very well oriented towards defense?
Really, Id like a ship that doesnt do much damage, but can take a hell of a beating and keep on regenning itself. I like to do deliveries and things right now, and I dont want to worry about some pirate killing me. Id be much more pleased if I could just frustrate him forever, and make him follow me around while I kept on regenning everything.
Anything like that in eve?
~Thanks for your time and help. - - - - -I have so much to learn, please take the time to help me and explain it well.. =) |

Welcome to the world of T2 ships. T2 are better versions of there T1 counterparts and have insane tanks to take damage. Command ships are the most amazing I can think of without going capital ships. There Battlecruiser fitted for rediculous damage and a beastly tank. (Tank = defense).
So that and Hac's and most T2 ships have high resistances so you take less damage and rep it easier.
If you cant beat something, arrange to have it beaten. -Corinth Associates |

Edited by: inSpirAcy on 12/08/2006 00:40:06 The Apocalypse (Amarr BS) can fit one of the strongest non-capital sustainable tanks in the game.
It has the powergrid to fit several 1600mm plates, enough lows to resist them properly and fit two large reppers. You can make it sustainable by cramming it full of expensive Cap Recharger II's, or just whack a cap injector and cover the highs in NOS; together with the large cargo bay it'll last for ages.
If you want to do it on the cheap (Apocs start around 90M and need decent skills to do the job well), the Maller (Amarr cruiser) can do a pretty decent job. Single 1600mm plate with excellent resists; there might even be a dual 1600mm setup, I haven't tried it.
Edit: Since you're Caldari, you might appreciate their angle on tanking. I'm not very familiar with the budget setups, but the Scorpion (Caldari BS) has enough mid-slots to fit a very solid passive tank.

ferox ferox ferox. Extremly good passive tank. will take alot to kill you if you are even semi decent at flying it. Look up ferox for appropriate builds.

Pretty much everyone fits both offense and defensive mods unless they are in a fleet battle, in which case it varies depending on the ship/ship type. Like before posted, if you fly or are willing to fly Caldari, the Ferox is a great ship for defense.

There's always one problem with trying to survive a pirate attack. If a pirate can't kill you, two pirates can, if two can't, three can. I'm all in favor of defense, but just watch out for groups, the best defense in this game is awareness of where pirates are. Unfortunately to get the hang of detecting them you really need to play for a while, and usually get attacked a few times.

For a new player the best tanking ships would be the Ammar Punisher class frigate and the Maller class cruiser. They both have a 5% bonus to all armor resist per skill level and have the grid/low slots to fit truely sick tanks. This is especially true of the Duramaller set-up which combines a 1600mm armor plate with small guns and nos.

A Thorax, or Vexor, mounting small guns and relying on drones for damage in order to fit a 1600 plate is also ridiculously hard to kill for your basic t1 to t1 cruiser fight. It has its flaws but the first few I caught boggled me way off gaurd.

Strictly speaking, the answer is "no". The game donesn't offer anything where a similar class of ship or a larger one can really be ignored in the way you're thinking. There are some ships that can take tremendous poundings, some have mentioned command ships and other tech II's, some have mentioned battlecruisers (which pale next to an actual battleship), and others have put forward some examples of ships they favor that can support a decent tank. The reality is the game is geared towards offense. You can defend, but at some point, you need to be able to outpace your opponent's tank before they do the same to yours. Within the tech I ships, the Dominix comes to mind as way to permanently annoy someone (and definately kill to someone too), but bearing in mind that someone may have other someones close by that can come and help kill you just the same.
Vigilence = defense. Keep your eyes on your surroundings, keep a close watch on the local chat channel to see who is in a system with you, and stay alert to changes in those things. Pirates have a harder time making victims of those make it difficult through smart play, more so than someone that tanks damage well. J.A.F.O.

If you need to have good defense while hauling a lot of goods, then deepspace transports are for you. They have a very good tank while also having 10000 m3 in the cargohold. Otherwise, as other posters have said command ships and battleships are your best bets.

The blockade runner has good defense as well- not as good, but close, with built in warp strenght, and higher speed. This makes it easier to escape your opponent.

If you're new just get a punisher. Being an amarr frig, it has good armour and its cheap, dosent require lots of sp like HACs and BCs and it also packs a decent punch.

As a Caldari pilot you'll probably go for an industrial with a lot of midslots. Put a solid shield tank into those, along with some speed, energy and maybe a damage control into the lowslots. Slot in whatever helps you survive by speed, energy and resists.
Offensive modules like guns and ECM sound cool on the first look, but activating them will keep you from jumping and docking for another 30 seconds.
Having a lot of shield helps a bit, having good passive resists is another bonus as your client might lag baddly when you warp into a tricky situation. Having an invulnerability field for another extra resist boost might help out some more. --*=*=*--
