So I'm looking for a neat single player game to play when I'm not playing Eve, which I need to give a bit of a break to.
I'm going for a fantasy RPG, non MMO. Ya know, elves, wizards, all that stuff. I'd like there to be the "evil-and-good/dark-and-light/morality" factor, where you can choose based on your actions (like Arcanum), and a variable skill set would be cool too (like the variation from lock picking to necromancy to elemental control to sword crafting in Arcanum...again).
But Arcanum has a lot of bugs, poorly done text, and is an old experience by now. I seek something new.
So name the games that you like most in this category, and suggest any you think might be fitting for the above concepts.
I'm looking to be a dark wizard by the way. Evil's my thing ___________________________________________

Oblivion is the latest single player craze out there ... but to be honest, I loved Morrowind more, dunno why tho, even if Oblivion looks better. Anyhow I'd reccomend either Morrowind or Oblivion. They are very good skill based rpg's, no preset classes in the traditional sense, lots of room to grow the way you want it. Can't remember any good new rpg's beside those anyhow. Before those I was playing Baldur's Gate 2!!!

Any of the DnD games from Bioware kick ass. You can't go wrong with them.

I've never been a person who enjoys playing games that include things like orcs, demons, mages and crazy magic... but i have to say I was VERY drawn in by Obilvion

Try Messiah of Might and Magic demo. The combat system is quite nice. Better than Oblivion imo. ---------

It's set aftera Nuclear War, But Fallout (1 and 2) is STILL the best RPG out there with proper customisation and play-style choice.
That and Planescape. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Fallout was also made by the same team as Arcanum iirc so you'll probably grasp it quite easily too Sig removed, lacks Eve-related content - Cortes

If you liked the fallout engine and wanted to see it applied to fantasy, this is your game. Kind of.
I always felt so limited. The bones of fallout were reanimated in a shamblign mockery of life, but the soul, the essence was still locked in the grave.
It's an ok game for what it is and I had a lot of fun with it, but don't expect more fallout freedom or baldur's gate story.
EDIT:
Avoid Sacred.
All the flaws of diablo II and then some, but really none of the perks. It could be interesting, and I played through most of it, but in all honesty I couldn't finish it.
For scions of diablo, I suggest Throne of Darkness. It's asian fantasy (Picture L5R rpg) but I greatly enjoyed the gameplay. It was like what diablo could have been, supporting you controlling a 4 man party without feeling disjointed.

well, I'd say that Oblivion is destined exactly for that - it's far too dumbed-down in content.
one you might be interested in is the "Gothic" series of games, distributed by JoWood. the voice acting (in the english version) is awful, but if you can get around that, then they're quite good games. Gothic 3 is out in a few weeks, and should be even more interesting than the others. you can probably get I and II in bargain-basement bins for only a few quid too.

Good fantasy RPGs that spring to mind are Dungeon Siege, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, and Titan Quest, but I'm not sure if any of them have the good-evil path, maybe Morrowind does I'm not sure.
When you mentioned having a good-evil path I thought of Knights of the Old Repuplic part one or part two right away, its not elves and orcs but the game changes quite alot as you sway either to the light side or the dark side, infact the endings are totally different depending on the path you choose.
Another RPG I really liked was Blade and Sword, again its not warriors and wizardry but I enjoyed it very much, its pretty much a Diablo clone and has an oriental theme to it, you can upgrade weapons with crystals much like in final fantasy 7 and there are 3 types of character class to chose from. -----------------------------

Gothic I Gothic II Neverwinter Nights Oblivion
Also I have to mention Anachronox. While it is not fantasy but more sci-fi it is worthy of notation. It is truly an amazing game. ===============================================

Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights for your good and ebil needs. (chaotic evil, neutral evil, lawful evil, etc) Morrowind and Oblivion (and Daggerfall) are morally ambiguous...not as simplistic as good and evil decisions due to the open ended gameplay (the game won't really acknowlege whether you're a 'good' or 'evil' character because that's up to you)...that said, it depends more on the groups you join. In Morrowind you could be a Telvanni wizard and do good or bad deeds as you want to, or join the Morag Tong and be a master assasin. In Oblivion you could join the Dark Brotherhood. Plus there's always slaughtering the local populace. If you really want a game to recognise your goodness or your badness then Fable would be good for you, as that's...about all it's good for I've seen deeper, more immersive puddles. But it does recognise ebilness, complete with flies, horns and red glowing eyes. __________________________ Indulge Me |

Edited by: Kalahari Wayrest on 12/08/2006 18:04:02 Plus Baldur's Gate 2 has some very entertaining bickering going on in the background if you have certain people in your party (Aerie with Jaheira for example ) No populace killing in that as far as I remember __________________________ Indulge Me |

I'd have to say Baldur's Gate 1/2, or Icewind Dale 2. Icewind Dale 2 is my favorite CRPG of all time I'd say - something about it just struck the right chord with me. And play Neverwinter Nights if you never had, will warm you up for the imminent release of Neverwinter Nights 2 =D. --------- Want to purchase a T2 Ice Mining Barge, the Mackinaw? Well I tried out Gothic 2 and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Those were the ones I could find demos for.
Gothic 2 was cool, I got killed relatively quickly but that's because I'm a noob there. Looking for isometric though, I hadn't realized there were so many fantasy RPGs that are 3rd person following camera views...whatever that's called.
Dark Messiah was...well let's just say, this laptop is better than my home computer, and this laptop couldn't run it so it might be a good game, but I won't be finding out for a long time. And it's also not isometric, which I admit I didn't mention at all.
Oh and Ralus, your sig is one of the best I've ever seen. ___________________________________________
