Ive been training for a while now for assault ships as its my first T2 ships i get access to. Well anyways the reason i went for it was that the first pirate that omgwtfpwned me adviced me to go for assault ships (maybe he fooled it was a pirate after all). Well now when i actually got access to assault ships (amarr ones) i just keep looking for Interceptors as they seem better. Well the actual question is how am i suppose to set up assault ships and what role do they play best? Damage dealers, semi-good tanking ships or? Well if anyone out there know please let me know. Thanks/kano

they are good tankers and damage dealers - not as fast as an interceptor but surely no ship would like to get tackled by an Assault Frigate... They do work best in groups as support ships (tackling, dealing with tacklers etc etc.) or small gangs

Eve Tribune #9 had a article about AF's and intys... quoting it below:

A topic that I see pop up in the Ships and Modules forum a lot is about Assault Ships. Namely, about how Interceptors can ultimately achieve more damage per second than Assault ships, despite having fewer guns. This is because most interceptors get a total 50% damage bonus to their weapon of choice. Examples include the Taranis, which gets 50% hybrid damage bonus, the Crow which gets 50% kinetic missile bonus, and the Claw, which gets a 50% projectile damage bonus. Compare that to the base 25% damage bonus Assault ships get, and it's apparent there is a large gap in damage.
However, it is worth noting that Interceptors are essentially made of cardboard. Their resistances leave much to be desired, and they're always struggling for cap which makes fitting a tank almost pointless. On the other hand, Assault Ships are known for their tanking abilities, they are most often employed in running the various 10/10 complexes throughout the game. Your average assault ships can take an uncanny amount of damage for their size, which is why they are so widely used in PVE. They are harder to hit than most things and when they do eventually get hit, they can tank the damage. The tanking argument is moot, though. Interceptors move far too fast and have way too small a Signature Radius to get hit by anything but strictly anti-interceptor weaponry, things not common on most ships. Assault Missile Launchers and Light Drones are about the only things that can pop an interceptor with relative ease. While just about anything can hit an Assault Frigate.
So let's see what we have so far. Assault Ships do less damage, and take more damage than Interceptors. Hmm.
From my point of view, this is a bit of an imbalance. Not only do Interceptors do more damage, but they are more likely to get to a range where they can actually use their extreme damage. Assault Ships are very slow among frigates, and thus have to fit long range weapons, further lowering their PVP abilities. Then you factor in the Survivability of both classes. It is harder to lose an Interceptor than it is to lose an Assault Ship in general. What it eventually comes down to is, there is no reason to fly an Assault ship in PVP, because Interceptors do more damage and actually live longer, and this is wrong. No ship should be forced into a role like Assault Ships are. They are designated "Ratting Ships" and nothing more at this point.
My proposed solution? Give Assault Ships more damage. You don't necessarily have to change Interceptors at all, there's just no reason that Assault Ships should be doing less damage than them. Doesn't that make sense though? The current state of things is just baffling. Why should Assault Ships be able to tank better, but lose damage potential because of that? The Interceptor is just as good at tanking in the sense that it doesnt take damage.

Not neccessarily...
They are more specialised than interceptors in a PVP situation...
A jaguar for example can be set up like a mini Vagabond.
Where as a harpy is more like a mini eagle with 150mm IIs it can snipe to around 100km using spike ammo
an ishkur is like a mini ishtur, with good drones skills both kick ass in 1 v 1 against the same class...
Dont really fly amarr AFs, so no idea on the veageance and the retribution..
The wolf and especially the jaguar are good in gangs as they are still quite fast, with the extra resistances as well, basically set them up as a heavy tackler...
Harpy = sniper
Ishkur = anti frig and assault frigs nightmare...
The AFs that would be better for the job for PVP tend to be lacking something....
The wolf only has 2 mids, buit more guns so firepower than the jaguar The enyo has the same problem as the wolf The hawk is just over shadowed as the harpy can snipe well The retribution only has 1 mid slot...
With good skills and good tactics they can do level 4 missions.. all be it very slowly...
Worth training???
why not? if u can fly inties it is 1 extra skill...

speaking strictly of the Harpy, it's really meant for being a thorn in the side of other frigs in fleet combat. It doesn't really do the damage to take out AFs, but interceptors and t1 frigs will have a hard time doing their job in a fleet when a harpy pilot with max skills is sitting 115km away taking pot-shots at them. At the very least making them warp out. However, whatever the Harpy can do, the Eagle can do better. It's more of a stepping stone to the Eagle.

He did right to tell you to train for AF, since two skills you need for them are great skills to have any way. As for the role of an AF, is well, to dish out decent damage and they got a nice tank :)
Keep an inty close by if your flying the retubution, 1med slot sucks. ---

But per CCP, true. (See the looong ceptor thread)
They are designed for precisely that role...and they fill it quite well. So, unfortunately, does the destroyer.
PS, that damage thing is utter rubbish. AF's have another turret and can fit a size larger of weapon (ave 5% more damage) because they have far better fittings than the Tier 3 T1 frigs..and interceptors *worse* than the same. That gives an effecive damage of 4.5 (Inty) to 5.25 (AF), AND AF's have better fittings and more lowslots for damage mods.

What does this mean though in EVE, and how are they better suited to it than other ship classes? Honest question. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Ive never owned a taranis that survived more than 3 hours. Ive never owned an enyo or ishkur that survived less than 5 pvp engagements. Maybe its just my style not being suited to them, but I prefer a ship that deals slightly less damage per second but lives hundreds of seconds longer. Hence assault ships are the way to go for me.

The original name for Assualt Ships was escort ships. This means they are designed to travel with a convoy, and take out the enemy support ships. Taking out interceptors, blackbirds, stealth bombers, etc. The harpy is excellent in small group pvp, fulfilling this role. However, the survivability in pvp of an AF is actually very low. They are relatively easy targets for larger ships to take out, without the speed of an interceptor. If you truly want an "assault" ship, interceptors are the way to go, with similar damage, and speed that gives them better survivablity. ----- Connecting pilots with corporations |

Edited by: Master OlavPancrazio on 14/08/2006 21:24:19 It's alot about mobility. AFs are more mobile than cruisers, but a little less effective, but end up being easier to tank in cruiser fights.
Same with hacs, more mobile than BS, a little less effective, but end up being able to tank better against BS sized guns.
Mobility is such an important thing, and that is where assualt ships are utilized. They are just as mobile as their t1 counterparts, yet at the same time able to take on sometimes a squad of their t1 counterparts. They are just better at what they do.
Why do people even need to post about it?
