Is it possable to find those abandoned ships I see on the scanner?

Edited by: Gericault m0id on 15/08/2006 11:54:59 Abandoned as in 'ship on scanner but nobody in local'? Yes. But if it's a nice ship it's probably located in some POS so be careful
Edit. you need scan probes.

Edited by: FarScape III on 15/08/2006 11:57:44 Oh yeah? I did not think that they could be in a POS unmanned and still show on the scanner?
Are there other reasons why ships are out there unmanned/unwomaned :)?

The ship stays in space if you unboard. It can be located anywhere afaik.

Most of the time it is junk ships floating around, like shuttles and noob ships.
Occasionally people leave ships in space when they try to move into a system.
My old corp found OSS ospreys fitted with T2 Deep core mining lasers in 0.0 and flew off with them just as their owner warped to the SS in his Apoc where he left them. I guess they were preparing to mine mercoxit there.
Another time my war gang caught a Raven that did not want to get killed so we made the pilot eject out of the ship and one of our interceptor pilots left his inty at a SS while he hauled the raven back to safe space.
Likewise i've found battlecruisers, and haulers floating around waiting to be reclaimed.
Most of the time thought the valuable ships that you find on scanner are more than likely located behind the shields of a POS so make sure you have "Control Tower" checked in your overview settings when you do these kinds of scans.

Since everybody else here is assuming that the ships are, indeed, abandoned, let me come in and talk about if they aren't:
A ship will have the "Board Ship" option when you right-click on it from the scanner, even if it has a pilot in it at the moment. Just because you see Board Ship doesn't necessarily mean it's available to be boarded.

Edited by: Gene Starjumper on 15/08/2006 15:38:58 Only the OP made the assumption.
Yes all ships will have the "Board Ship" option available in the scanner. BUT if there is no one in local except you, it is safe to assume that those ships are abandoned. Just make sure you're not scanning a POS in the same direction that the ship is scanning in.
Reclaiming ships located at a POS is a whole differnet story

To locate an unmanned ship in space do the following. 1 train for a co op frigate, co op cloak, probe launcher and probes.
2. go to your system of interest and conduct multiple scans to determine who is moving thru the system from those that are not. Once you find a ship that interest you then proceed to #3 :)
3. Launch 3 probes in 3 sep locations in the system. i.e. planet1, planet 5, planet 9... then analysz the data for what ever ship type you are looking for. Once you launch the probes you will be able to analyze thru the use of the scanner.
4. when you have found that ship type you will need to warp to that location again and repeat step #3 (note you will need 3 diff probes asthey all scann at various ranges). and start scanning using the next lower probe you have (ie u start out with the probe that covers the most amount of area 1st then drop down to the next and so on.) eventually you will find the ship you are looking for.
Use caution tho if u are in low secas you can warp to a pos that may wish to see you witout a ship. or may even jump in on a mining op in a asteroid belt too lol.

Edited by: Sonya Rayner on 15/08/2006 23:58:00 It is not necessary to have a covert ops ship. Any ship that can fit in Scan Probe Launcher (230 CPU units usage) will do it. Though each race has specific frigate souted for that needs and even with some bonuses to scan duration. I, personally, use industrial for that, since it can fit two launchers :)
Also it is not necessary to drop probes at different locationsin system, dropping 3 probes in a row in one location will do it too, assuming the object of interest is within the maximum scanning range of the probes (marked on probes).
p.s. our corp once has probed out and hijacked raven left in a safespot

Awsome, I will look forword to getting into probe skills, can you believe some people say there is no adventuring in EVE? they do not know what they are talking about.
I'm in to EVE for the long hall, so I can wait to get the skills, not THAT long anyways but I still do plenty of scouting and adventuring in EVE not only for material things but types of people , corps, different places in EVE have all sorts of politics to get into it is like a hobby of interaction, I enjoy EVE and the players, Thanks for the info as usual.

Edited by: Mr Cleann on 16/08/2006 16:57:48 YW M8, Just one more thought to pass, alittle off topic so bear with me pls. This pertains to ppl that are new btw. If you havent done so yet, it would serve you best that once you get yourself into a good miner, fighter, and hauler that you might consider getting all your learning skills (abt 12 of them) along with the cybernetic skill out of the way as you can greatly reduce your training times thru the skills as well as using implants for atributes and module enhancements.
I do agree with the comment that probe launchers can be used with any type of ship. I just choose the co op ship out of preferance. cause of its abilities to stay hidden in enemy territory and spying. I've used them on cruiserd and bs's but got tired of turning them off and truning other mods on either while in space or having to dock. I never thought of adding on to a hauler b4, thats kinda interesting.
So far the largest ship I have captured has been an apoc. Just remember If you leave a ship unmanned in space, and im in your system looking for that ship type, I will find it and it will become mine. So with that I add this.... if its valuable to you keep it docked in a station or at a pos that is only friendly to you and deadly to others.

Player owned structure.
They mean starbases. Deploy a control tower around a moon, anchor it, then deploy and anchor a bunch more player owned structures inside the force field it projects. You can leave ships there too (you can leave them anywhere, technically, but the force field makes them a lot harder to steal ).

That is:
Player Owned Structure/Starbase
A set of some structures, anchored in space near a moon, forming some kind of bubble. All structures are anchorable around the Control Tower, which provides defences (large radius shields around structures and players' ships) and power to the secondary structures within the POS - defencive turrets, hangarsn ship maintenance, moon harvestersm refiners, shipyards, mobile labporatories, mobile factories, etc...
